Best AnswerNo. Apple TV is NOT an add-on for your iMac. Apple TV is a set-top box, which is designed to connect to your TV, not your iMac.
If you want to watch TV on your iMac, try finding those "internet-TV" applications for your mac.- Answered by Seth C from Bangkok

Do you mean by physical means, like a cable or something? The answer is no. But they do connect virtually through your local area or wireless network. iOS devices can be used to control Apple TV, or even mirror their displays on it through AirPlay.
Being a new Apple TV user, I was pleased to see how this connectivity can be a real boon for those of us who want to make presentations using our iPads. Just hook up Apple TV to a projector or large screen TV, et voila!- Answered by Marc D from Hamilton

Can I output music from an iMac through my surround sound system using AppleTV via my home wireless network?
I have a surround sound system which includes a TV, audio system and apple TV (version 1). My goal is to be able to output music through apple TV via my wireless network. For example, I'd like to create a playlist on my imac and then output it through Apple TV and thus my surround sound system. Hopefully I can use the equipment I already have without spending a fortune to make this happen. Thanks for any assistance.

AnswerI believe that if you connect the HDMI output cable of the AppleTV to your audio system, which would then also pass its output to your TV, that you could listen to iTunes from your iMac. On the AppleTV side, you need to turn on Computer Sharing, configure it for your iTunes from you iMac, and then contents of your iMac iTunes will be available to AppleTV. The rest depends upon your stereo system receiver/amp - if it supports HDMI inputs and outputs, you should be able to wire things up appropriately

I have an old fashioned stereo system with great sounding Bose speakers. Can I attach Bose stereo speakers to apple TV?
- Asked by Ann G from Saint Louis Park

AnswerAnn, I also have an ancient Harmon/Kardon stereo with old KEF Cantor-III speakers. The sound is just fabulous, and I see no need to replace my beloved audio system with a newer (and probably worse-sounding) one, just to get an optical digital audio interface that I can plug in to my Apple TV.
What I did instead was to connect my audio system to my Sony TV via the analog audio outputs (dual red/white RCA connectors). The AppleTV sends digital audio to the TV (via HDMI) which then converts it into analog and sends it to the Harman/Kardon amplifier and the KEF speakers.
I suggest that you do the same, since you obviously have a decent analog stereo system. This setup has the added advantage that *any* video source (Apple TV, cable or satellite receiver, DVD player, etc.) will play through your stereo.- Answered by Julian B from Baie-d'urfe

Can Apple TV be used as a wireless router?
Apple TV
- Asked by Beth S from Wabasha
- 18-May-2013
- Flag as inappropriate
AnswerNo, the Apple TV cannot be used as a wireless wouter. You need to have a primary wireless router (Airport Extreme, Time Capsule, Airport Express, Linksys, D-Link, etc.) that the Apple TV can wirelessly connect to for Internet access.
I have a Time Capsule (the primary wireless router) plus two Apple TVs and an Airport Express. To correct the previous commenter, the Airport Express has LIMITED AirPlay functionality. Using iTunes on a Mac, iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch, you can redirect the AUDIO stream to an Airport Express. However, to redirect an audio/video stream, you NEED an Apple TV; the Airport Express has no video connectivity (e.g. HDMI) whatsoever.- Answered by Julian B from Baie-d'urfe

Can you stream movies from your macbook through the apple tv onto your TV? or is there an easier/cheaper way to do this?
- Asked by Justin T from Kingston
- 23-May-2013

AnswerYes, you can stream any movie in your iTunes library wirelessly through the Apple TV. The only cheaper way I can think of is to get an appropriate cable and/or adapters to directly connect your MacBook to your TV's video and audio inputs. That's quite a pain, though, and I think the Apple TV is worth the price just for the convenience of not having to fool around in the back of the TV every day.

Can the Apple Tv be used without an Internet connection.
Can i hook up the Apple TV and use my Iphone 4 to watch my Iphone content on the TV. We go camping alot and i would like to take the Apple TV with me and hook up to a projector and watch the pictures and videos we have stored on our Iphone's.

AnswerNot positive, but consider that your phone and the Apple TV need to be connected to the same network. That means you need a Wireless router, which the phone would hook to WiFi, and the ATV could be wired to. Do you normally have a WiFi router camping? Don't see why that wouldn't work, unless there is some setup of the ATV that it needs internet access for. Once on the same network, not reason they shouldn't see each other.
Seems simpler just to get the right cable for an iPhone 4 and your projector.- Answered by Sven J from Colorado Springs
