This is a difficult question to answer, why, well I have this drive and it started to play up, kept dismounting from my iMac.

A bit of investigation resulted in finding out that LaCie have had problems with power supplies. Mine started playing up when the drive was 14 months old. As LaCie offer a 3 year limited warranty I was none to hopeful, but fired off an email to their support desk.

Bottom line, I was asked to send back my old power supply and a replacement turned up, gratis, 2 weeks later. My drive now works perfectly.

So it would seem that some of the failures and negative comments here may not be as a result of a bad drive but a failing power supply.

The blue light in front (not annoyingly bright) is the LaCie Shortcut Button. It launches any application you program it to. Most use it to launch Time Machine backup or LaCie's back up software that is included: Genie Backup Assistant software with data restore for Windows or Intego Backup Assistant software with data restore for Mac.

As for the power; LaCie has an On, Off, Auto switch in the back to set how you'd like to have your drive powered.

    On- drive is always on.
Auto- hibernates when your computer does
Off- always off. You could use this if you were going on vacation and didn't need it on.
