    TC 500 MB 1st gen

My 1st generation 500GB TC worked flawlessly until the power supply died in just under 3 years (24/7 operation). I always keep one backup of a backup so when it died I wasn't left without my data. Apple replaced it for free due to extended warranty on the product (no apple care in place). 1.5 year later the replacement still works. Good value for money.

Always back up your TC to another external Hard disk!!!!
    (once a month)

Apple also replaced my 80GB hard disk in a MB AIr from 2008 (free). This happened a few days before the TC died. I did upgrade to a new 2012 version recently.

I will probably keep on buying Apple kit as long as Apple looks after their customers. If the repair costs stack up then I will probably go back to cheaper products because cheap can replaced with cheap

Everything works as promised, but it would be nice if Time Capsule could be used as a streaming device like other NAS servers out there with a special app for iPhone .

Saddens me to read the reviews from other disappointed customers. Thought that the hardware issues were history?

    Time Capsule 4thGen

I think the Time Capsule is brilliant so long as you have up to date equipment.

Previously I had the 3rd Generation time capsule which was great but I could only hit 8~10MB/s. This isn't much of a viable back up solution at those speeds and means you'll be waiting all day. (It wasn't the devices fault bare in mind)

I then decided to get the new 4th Gen which yielded the same results. (Excluding direct connection)

After much fiddling around I realised the ethernet cable I was using may of been in the 5e category but it was of poor quality. I then seeked out a spare which was the same category but of better quality. (More wires visible in the ethernet head.)

I instantly noticed an improvement in speed with fluctuating patterns from 20MB/s to 40MB/s with a set up as so: TC linked to router VIA ethernet (was 100M now 1000M) to PC (1000 / 1900M). Data transmits syncs at 1000 with speeds peaking at 48MB/s

I suggest a Cat.6 or higher ethernet cable which should yield better if not more stable results.

    2TB failed after 23 months

After reading reviews 2 years ago now, I decided to purchase a 2TB time machine hoping mine would last. Easy to install and set up, worked great till last week. Then the dreaded yellow light just kept flashing. After the Genius bar looked at it. They told me the hard drive had failed. Arghhhh! Fortunately it's covered under the apple care and a replacement is on the way. So if your'e thinking of buying one of these, consider the apple care incase yours goes pop too.

I received it within 48hrs. It's very easy to configure. Good Wi Fi. Previously HD movies streamed to apple TV would buffer for 20 seconds with Netgear. Now plays immediately.

Easy to set up, easy to use.
Good wifi coverage in a big house.
However, based on other reviews in this forum, I really hope it will last longer than 19 months :)
