Can i connect a external hard drive to my airport extreme and use it as a time capsule?
- Asked by Abdul S from Manassas

AnswerYes, I do that. However, transferring data to/from the external HD is slower than from a Time Capsule with a built-in HD. It's much easier to change the HD as needed using the USB connection though.

Best AnswerThe Airport Extreme has to be connected to your AT&T modem. The Airport Extreme needs to be connected to your modem because it does not have a built-in modem, and yes, the Airport Extreme attaches to your modem forever.

How easy is it to set up the Airport Extreme with a Netgear wired router DG834. Does anybody use this configuration?
I have heard that in the UK it is difficult to find a DSL modem that is compatible with the Airport Extreme. I have the Netgear DG834 and am hoping to install an Apple wireless network but am nervous about compatibility and ease of set up.

AnswerYou need to do it via a router. Plug an ethernet cable from the modem to the router and use another ethernet cable to connect from the router to the Airpotr Extreme. I did whilst I had adsl and it plugged in and worked. I'm not having any luck with ethernet direct from the modem to Airport Extreme.

Can I plug my ethernet cable directly to my compuer for direct ethernet and configure the extreme to act as a wireless router for my laptop ?
- Asked by Silly G from Calabasas
- 23-Dec-2010

Best AnswerNo. You must connect the AirPort Extreme to your modem or gateway device's Ethernet cable. Use your Ethernet cable to connect your non-wireless computer to one of the Extreme's three Ethernet LAN ports. Use your wireless laptop to access the Extreme's wireless network. Both computers will then be on the same network, and will be using the same internet connection. Your ISP will see only the single connection made by the Extreme. It will not know if you have one, two, or fifty devices connected.

Can I Airplay without internet, and stream content from my macbook, ipad, iphone onto my HD TV?
I am located in Afghanistan, and I own a Macbook Pro late 2011, an iPad 3rd Genaeration, and an iPhone4s. I am wanting to stream product from each/all of these devices to my HD TV...I am interested in getting a device to airplay, like the Airplay Extreme, my only concern is that with limited internet(none), I will not be able to meet my goal of streaming all of my content untililzing the Airplay Extreme, I know that once I am back home I will not have any issues but...well I guess I dont want to wait that long, lol. I would love to purchase one now. So if you tell me that I can set up, lets say a stand alone internal network with all of my devices without Internet, I will definintely be buying one very soon. Thank You for your assistance.

AnswerYou need an apple TV along with a router with wireless (The Airport Extreme works Fine). Set up the ATV. It can be set up either wired ro wirelessly to the router. Connect your other iDevices to the same wireless router.
That's it. If you have Mountain Lion, on the MBP you will be able to stream to the ATV, as well as every other iDevice will now be able to stream to the ATV.
When you are at home, if you have ATV's on multiple TV's, when you go to stream, you will see every ATV on your network and you pick which device to stream to. Pretty cool.- Answered by Todd J from Columbus

Will the airport extreme work with a time warner cable modem?
I have a cable modem that was given to me by time warner cable, my ISP. My question is, will an airport extreme work correctly with something like this?
Also, my ISP only allows five devices to be connected at one time, so I was wondering if this would be an issue, or if any devices connected to the airport extreme would all be counted as just one?- Asked by Susan L from Brooktondale

Best AnswerWe have Airport Extreme connected to our Time Warner cable modem. No problem. I can't be sure about your second question (5-device limit) but I believe the Airport Extreme counts as only one.

what is the range or radius for the airport
- Asked by Annmarie M from Sayville
- 14-Nov-2009
- Flag as inappropriate
AnswerRanges are highly variable, depending on a number of factors. For typical household usage, expect a range of 150 feet in any direction (using 802.11g). If you minimize the number of walls and carefully position your Base Station, the range could easily double. 802.11n can double the number again, assuming your Station and computer are both compatible.

Does Airport Extreme work with the Motorola SB 5100 Surfboard?
- Asked by Wesley B from Raleigh
- 01-Jan-2011

AnswerThe Motorola Surfboard appears to be a generic cable modem with an ethernet port. Just plug that ethernet into the ethernet uplink port on the Airport Extreme, and connect your devices (computers, etc) to the Airport Extreme over ethernet and/or WiFi.

What AT&T DSL modem works best with the AirPort Extreme?
I just bought an AE and would like to know what AT&T FastAccess DSL Direct 6.0 modem works best with it. I have a 327W Westell wireless routher/modem hooked up right now so I am assuming I will need to purchase a separate DSL modem to make the AE work. What are some of the best DSL modems on the market?

Best AnswerGot better performance by trashing the AT&T provided 2Wires at two locations this past year and replacing them with the Actiontec (Model GT701D) 1-Port Broadband DSL Modem with Built-In Firewall. Both connected easily to the AT&T service. No issue since then at either location. Third location still uses an AT&T provided Siemens 4100 in its sixth year (said to have a six year lifespan). Will switch to another Actiontec (off the shelf at Best Buy) when needed.
My guess is that most modems are much the same. Simply stick to a DSL modem, not a modem/router, and avoid any and all USB modems.- Answered by Andrew H from Carmel
