Main drive for 2012 iMac?
I asked about another SSD raid setup but think this sounds even better. Could this be my main drive for iMac?
I was disappointed to read its noisy though I'm sure it's not that bad. Mac peeps prolly have higher standards. One possible use case for me if possible would be with windows and the new mech warrior game if that might work? The speed boost might really make my stock iMac a capable game machine for even new titles (it's easily handled the few older Mac titles I've experimented with.
But mainly my reason is speed without compromising my iMac's style. My two previous computers are a Linux box and MacBook Air both with 128GB SSDs and I find it hard to go back from near instant booting and app loading they give me to the retro waiting experienced with old timey spinning platters.- Asked by Anthony T from San Francisco

AnswerAlexander thanks for your reply.
Funny but I did decide on the Mercury Helios/Accelsior and it is very fast. It's not as fast as I was imagining (for $800) and I think that has to do with latency with Thunderbolt as I think you were suggesting- sustained reads and rights get a blazing 700 mbps so yes the target case is someone who has to do fast transfers and this is certainly blazing for that.
So that's 10 times faster than the stock HDD which gets in the 60s but Application loading and booting are definitely not 10 times faster but probably closer to 4 times faster (time to login screen went from one minute to fifteen seconds). I do agree now that the internal one would likely be faster but still it's a $1300 option.
The Mercury Helios is noisy...not super noisy by any means (I would have said really quiet before I owned my iMac) but when you're talking about an addition to a whisper quiet iMac it may be a concern. I got a 2 m thunderbolt cable so I may see about putting it a bit away off my desk. I'm also going to look into replacing the stock Helios fan with a super quiet fan.- Answered by Anthony T from Cary

Best AnswerI had the same question, so I called the online store phone number. They said I could buy a Macbook Pro with a built-in French or German keyboard, but NOT Spanish. The only way to get a MacBook Pro with a built-in Spanish keyboard is to buy it in Spain, pay for it with Spanish credit card, and have it delivered to an address in Spain, they said. This is what I will now do. It will be a pain from the point of view of guarantee and support, because i live in UK. But they don't offer any other option, we are a segment of customers Apple does not make life easy for.
Interestingly, the Genius bar in my local Apple store say they *used* to open up MacBooks and replace English built-in keyboards with Spanish ones. But they don't any more.
Good luck.- Answered by Graham J from Madrid

If you want a server, Mac is probably not your best option unless you have a specific need to run Mac programs. Mac is a desktop computer. Even the Apple website itself uses a Linux-based server. Good server operating systems include Linux (CentOS or Red Hat), OpenBSD, NetBSD, and FreeBSD.

does amount of ram matter with solid state drives?
- Asked by Wally M from Seattle
- 20-Aug-2012
- Flag as inappropriate
AnswerTry to think of memory storage in 3 stages: CPU>RAM>Hard drive/Solid state Drive.
When you run a program, it's resources are called up from the storage drive and stored in memory so that if you should keep using that program, data can be recalled very quickly rather than having to go back to the storage drive to find it again. The CPU memory or cache is usually only a few MB big and so handles the most needed data to run/process the software you are using. Less needed data is moved down and stored in the RAM (random access memory) where, when it is needed, it is transferred to the CPU to be processed. Now the lowest level but the level with the most space is obviously the Hard drive and now more commonly Solid state drive. Whilst Solid state drives are fast, they're no where near as fast as RAM meaning once you've filled your RAM up, memory will start to be "paged" to the storage drive. Of course with an SSD being faster than a HDD, the computer will be faster but you want to try and minimise the amount of data that has to be paged to the storage drive, this is obviously done by having more RAM.
Short answer; Yes, the amount of RAM is still very important even with an SSD as opposed to a HDD.- Answered by Michael B

Can you engrave a 27" iMac?
Is there any way possible to have an iMac 27" engraved as a "SPECIAL 50TH BIRTHDAY GIFT"?
I know you engrave iPods, iPhones, iPads...for "Sweet 16's", "turning into an Adult at 18, legal to vote and all", then there's the whole "Turning LEGAL AGE OF 21" who probably won't remember it in the morning...but "TURNING THE BIG 5-0"!! "You've been thru 13, Sweet 16, Adult 18 TEENS", and even living & turning "LEGAL 21"!!
But turning "HALF A CENTURY, THE BIG 5-0" that's a great way to have a computer engraved for that person.
All I can do is ask. I bought the computer in your SouthPark Apple store in Charlotte, NC. But they had NONE IN STOCK! Which made me have to order it and wait for shipped. I figured there would be no harm in asking if it 'COULD BE DONE"!!
Thanks all the same it would & will be their 1st iMac and for an older person 27" screen will be great for when the eye sight starts to go!
Thank You if POSSIBLE~

Is it possible to upgrade the graphics card on the Macbook Pro 13"?
I'm looking to buy a new laptop and am currently undecided between the higher-end Macbook Pro 13" and the lower end 15". I like the size of the 13" and the specs are all good EXCEPT the graphics card. I play Sims 3 a lot and I also do some video editing and Photoshop works. Plus, the 15" is a little out of my budget. Is it possible to customize my Macbook Pro's graphics card from the current integrated Intel HD 4000 to a dedicated NVIDIA one?

about mac mini storage
for mac mini 2.3GHZ: 500GB
it says 2GB memory and 500 GB hard drive
so my question is the storage memory where i can save files, data, apps in this mac is 2gb or 500 gb?
thank you- Asked by Ahmad H from California
- 23-Jul-2012
- Flag as inappropriate
AnswerThe 500gb hard drive is where you save files, store music, videos, and apps. The 2gb of memory is for multitasking. If you have 3 apps open the 2gb of memory remembers the data on each app. The more apps you have open, more of the memory will be taken away. Once you close all your apps you will gain all of your 2gb of memory back.

rMBP or MBA? Need Help
Okay I will be buying a Mac soon, this will be the first Mac I buy but I am a very experienced PC user and I currently study Computing and physics etc at College. I am torn between:
Option 1: Mac Book Pro 15 inch with Retina base model
or
Option2 : Fully upgraded 13 inch Mac Book Air + Printer + Apple TV + Superdrive
both options work out to be about the same amount of money, I do a fair amount of web site design, so Photoshop, along with interest in using XCode, Logic Pro will also be a possibility in the future and not much gaming as I have a console, but I do play WoW and D3 occasionaly, So will the MacBook Air be capable of doing all of this, as I would like to save some money to buy the other things I listed, or will I need to buy a Mac Book Pro? Thanks :)- Asked by Ben P

Can't decide: 13" MacBook Air vs. 13" MacBook Pro!!! Please help!
I am in junior high and have saved up to buy a computer for a while now. I have heard many different things between the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, and am not informed enough to know which one would work best for me.
I will be using this laptop for:
-surfing the web (lots of tabs and windows up at once)
-blogging
-schoolwork
-some music
-videos (youtube, hulu, etc.)
I am a little concerned with the storage of the Air, but not sure if I should be or not.I have heard great things about the SSD (not sure if it's a feature I would need, the Pro would probably work just as well)I also like the price of the Pro better...
Please help!!- Asked by Tess W

Best AnswerThey are much the same really, the only difference is the weight. I have a 13" Macbook Air and use it for the same things you have mentioned. It works very smoothly and they new Safari is great when you have lots of tabs open. Also, I have found the Pro to be somewhat slower and clunkier to use.

Will boot camp affect my fusion drive?
I am a techie so don't be afraid to use technical terms. I want to buy a Mac mini with a fusion drive. I also want to portion the HDD to 3/4 OS X and 1/4 windows. If I do this, will it also portion my SSD? Because I want to keep all of the flash for OS X because I will use it a lot more than windows.

AnswerAccording to the knowledge base on support.apple.com (I can't link there, but the article ID is HT5446):
You can add one extra partition to the hard disk used in a Fusion Drive volume. This partition can be formatted for Mac OS X or Windows. This extra partition will only use the hard drive and not the flash drive.
So basically, yes, it does what you want. :)- Answered by James F
