For an installation where 1 teacher wants to control 20 student machines, does every student machine need to have ARD installed?
The students will never need to control other machines.

Answer
Only the teacher needs the ARD program installed. The student machines need to have "Remote Management" checked, which is found in system preferences under sharing on every Mac OSX computer, and an administrator password.
