This depends on (1) the length and (2) the "bitrate" of the songs.

The "bitrate" (my spellcheck keeps trying to change it to "nitrate") is the sound quality of the song. If you look at your music library in iTunes, you'll see that "Bit Rate" is one of the columns; this lists the bitrate of each of your songs.

Bitrate is measured in kbps. The "standard" bitrate when I was a lad was 128 kbps, but now the songs that you buy & download from Apple are 256 kbps. Basically, the higher the bitrate, the better the sound quality - up to 1411 kbps, which is uncompressed, lossless "wav" audio. (Try listening to songs of different bitrates on good headphones, and you'll see what I mean.)

A basic rule of thumb: 1 minute of audio at 128 kbps is roughly 1 MB. So, since 256 kbps is double the nitrate, 1 minute of audio at 256 kbps is roughly 2 MB. And 4 minutes of audio at 256 kbps is roughly 8 MB.

So: say that the average bitrate of your songs is 256 kbps, and the average length is 4 minutes. That means that you'll be able to fit 2,000 songs (8*2000=16,000). If the average bitrate is 128kbps and the average length is 4 minutes, you'll be able to fit 4,000 songs.

**Note that if you click on your iPod in iTunes, and then click on the "summary" tab, there's a checkbox that allows you to "convert higher bit rate songs to X kbps." This doesn't affect the bitrate of songs on your computer - what it does is to convert songs to a maximum bitrate on your iPod. This allows you to store more music on your iPod - but at the cost of lower sound quality.

  • It depends on the Size of the Song File and how long it is, because thats that tells how much space you will have left to have more songs.

  • IF u can put 250 songs on 1GB then u would be able to hold just under say 3500-3800 songs on 16GB because when it is formatted and the os has been put on then it loses memory so 3800 songs is still plenty

  • It depends on the bit rate of your songs when you import them into iTunes. If you use the native settings (ACC iTunes Plus 256 kbps) you can expect maybe 2000 songs. If you change the import settings to lesser quality you can fit more songs. The amount of songs you can put on your iPod goes beyond capacity and track length.

  • The best rule of thumb is just over 1MB for each minute of music. A 16GB iPod has slightly less than 16 "gigabytes" of storage available for songs, somewhat more than 14 actual gigabytes (1GB=1,073,741,824 Bytes), so you can reasonably expect around 200+ hours of music.

Digital music comes in different formats. WAV is uncompressed and about 10MB/Min, FLAC and Apple Lossless are about 2-2.5 MB/Min, Compressed "lossy" MP3 is typically about 1.2 MB/Min.

Most people can't tell the difference between lossless and lossy mp3 using handheld devices, earbuds or inexpensive headphones.

You can get the best results by buying lossless music and converting it to mp3 with a free pc/mac program, specifying greater compression and loss, getting under 1MB/Minute or 240-250 hours into an iPod. To accomplish this, use VBR (Variable Bit Rate) at 90-115 bps mp3. Compress podcasts and audio books to VBR 32-64 bps Mono.

  • I have 1,200 songs on my 64GB iPod touch 5 and it takes up 9.5 GBs so if I do the math it should be able to hold around 2,000 uncompressed songs. However if you compress them (By clicking "Convert higher bit rate songs to 128 kbps ACC") you should be able to hold around 12,700 songs.

  • I uploaded 1900 songs on my new ipod 7th gen 16gb and i only have 4gb left free. The only thing i have loaded to it since opening the package is music. The new ipods only hold just under 3k songs. I think it has something to do with everything that Apple pre-loads on them or the programs that are on the ipod now.
