Ultimate Ears are indeed Ultimate.
I have gone through quite a few apple compatible earphones. After a bit of research, I thought i'd try these. They are branded as UE 400vi in Europe and Asia. They are branded as UE 500vi in the USA and South America. Same earphones I have found. These are the only earphones in this price range that have 1. BASS - A Dramatic and solid Bass 2. Clear mids, lows and highs - I heard details that other earphones missed. 3. Decent Noise Isolation, so you don't hear the fellow next to you on the tube, and they don't hear you.
I've tried the Monster Beats Tour Earphones, which is the latest mainstream fad. I had a good opportunity to try them when another apple store customer was returning theirs (I gather due to some kind of case vs jack issue). The bass on the monster beats was about the same as the UE 400vi's. However, the clarity on the Monster beats earphones was far lower.
I've also tried numerous other apple compatible earphones in this price range from sennheiser's to japanese Audio-Technica to Apple's own earbuds (not the ones that come with iphone / ipod - the in ear dual drivers for 60 pounds - great value and good sound). Compared to these the UE 400vi's sound beautiful and deep. They are very very well tuned dynamic drivers and have a rich, beautiful and superior sound.
The only real issue I have with these is that the mic is slightly too low for me. Easily solved by wrapping the earphones over your ears. I don't think most people will have this problem though.
They're also light and comfortable. which is a plus when you want to use the mic for hours on end.
These are tucked away in an unassuming area of the apple store, away from the flashy and inferior monster beats, vodas, and Klipsch's. For an unassuming pair of earphones, these sound superb. It really feels like you're listening to a much more expensive piece of kit. …- Written by Amit M from London

Ultimately great
As a professional sound engineer, headphone in my professional work are very important therefore i am very choosy when it come to buying in ear headphones, the Ultimate Ears 400vi are a very good edition to my collection. The bass response is very full rivaling the professional moulded in ears system that Ultimate make. The addition of integrated volume, mic and answer button make these headphone a must have, the mic even worked clearly in the most windy of conditions! A great buy. …

Brilliant
I had some Phillips in ear headphones and wanted an upgrade. I spent £105 on some Shure 115, but found I didn't like the sound.. I took a punt on these, and WOW! such a detailed sound, from my iPhone on pretty low bit rates (160kbps)! What I didn't like about the Shures was it had good bass but the mids were too prominent and the highs were severely lacking, and I wanted good bass and treble also, these UEs really deliver that, and £30 cheaper too! …

Lovely sound, but unfortunately has a cable design error
I've used the UE 400vi with great enjoyment, both for general use and while exercising. The sound quality is really good compared to all of the other in-ears I've heard through the years, they fitted very well into my ears and the tangle-free cable was really nice.
Unfortunately I have twice sent my UE 400vi back to the retailer due to a cable design error, because it after long time use gets ripped up in the connection to the mini-jack. Last time I decided to get my money back, and therefore tried out the Nocs NS400, which cannot live up to the UE 400vi in regards to both the sound quality and fitting into my ears. I'm very disappointed of the Nocs NS400.
The UE 400vi is indeed great earphones, and had it not been for the cable design error, I would buy another pair. 5 stars for sound quality and fitting, but 3 stars in general due to that single annoying flaw. For your info Logitech did offer great service. …- Written by Rasmus U from Odense C

Everything (positive) everyone has said they are
Bought entirely on the basis of the review on this site.
Excellent little head phones.
Functional rather than flashy but wel l built and really good sound for the size and money. Stay well put in ears - none of the constant fiddling that bedevils similar ear buds.
My only wish is that the solid little plastic box that they come with was in a brighter colour than grey so that I could find it more easily in he depths of my bad. …- Written by Huw W from London

10 month review
I got these headphones as a requested gift, having read the sound reviews on this page. I have now had these headphones for 10 mon ths and they need a replacement.
To start with they were brilliant, I previously had the Nixon headphones which fell apart very quickly. So was blown away with the quality of both the sound and the build. I have used this set almost every day for at least 7 hours, (as I listen to music whilst I work). Using the headset for Skype calls has been brilliant and I have never had the microphone issue.
Over the 10 months though: One cone has almost fully gone, the cable has required some electrical tape to hold it together and the buds require constant super glueing. Its now got to the stage where I can only use one bud and every time I take it out, the bud itself stays in my ear and I need to prize it out with my fingers.
But instead of reading the above as bad comments. View it instead, that only now am I prepared to get a new pair, the sound quality is that good. Purely out of curiosity though I will try different brand.
My only real criticism is the stupid cable. The wear and tear is probably typical for a product used this extensively. I think they were trying to create the flat profile that the beats headphones use for anti tangle..... but they failed. You spend far to much time trying to straighten it every time you get them out. …- Written by Chris W from wellington

They work with both the iPad and iPad 2, according to the graphics you will see if you scroll up a b it. As for how well they work, that's purely subjective. You have to try them yourself. It's a pity one can't 'try before you buy'. …
