Buyer beware - not for iPhone

    • Written by from San Diego

Online it states in the description/spec that it's for ipad, but if you buy the box in a store there isn't any wording that hints it is not for an iPhone. 1star for the box. The device works fine up to 32 gig.

    Does exactly what it says

A little bit confused by some previous reviews that mention attaching a camera or it does not work with a particular camera. This device is surely only for use with an SD CARD. I have found it to be a great addition to my ipad. Agree that it is not cheap but had it for a present. A definite recommend for an easy way to transfer photos to your ipad.

It works well when it plays well with other products.

I bought the iPad Mini to go on vacation along with the Lightning to SD Card Camera Reader. My bad I did not realize it is only for a camera as it is true you do have to have the directory/folder called DCIM for this to work. OK, my camera is a Nikon Coolpix, a pretty popular standard camera, in my opinion. The Nikon Coolpix when a SD card is used the camera creates the DCIM directory/folder plus another NCFL. Your pictures are then stored into another directory/folder under the DCIM directory/folder called 100Nikon. If you move all your pictures into the DCIM from the 100Nikon directory/folder and delete the extra folders 100Nikon and NCFL, the lightning fast transfer works to put your photos onto the iPad Mini. Works great then. But once you put the SD card back into your camera the file structure is then recreated and the SD card will not work again with the Lightning to SD Card Camera Reader for importing to in the iPad Mini without all the file/fold manipulation. I wish there was a way to state or drill down the file structure one the SD card with the iPad Mini. But you can't and thus a computer is needed. Not good for me to use on vacation when I wanted my iPad Mini to be my one and only solution for picture uploading. I need to find another solution. I was hoping that this was just an SD card reader not just for camera use, my bad for not reading the title better. I was hoping this was a more versatile tool than just the Lightning to USB Camera Adaptor which in my case would most likely be the better choice here. I want to purchase the Lightning to USB Camera Adaptor but I have read a review about how it will not work with Nikon CoolPix. Apple and Nikon apparently don’t play well together. SAD. I am really bummed about this purchase.

£25 plus the cost of a Powered USB Hub to make it work

It's a common problem with this accessory. Plug it in, attach camera, iPad states " Cannot support the device as it uses too much power" (I paraphrase). So you need to spend at least £10 on a powered USB hub to interface between the iPad and camera. It would have been good if the Apple guy in store had come clean on this. Can I have a £10 refund ? Why do you tarnish your reputation ? Samsung are getting ahead of you !!!

Ok so, all I see here is that it won't work with 64 gig cards blah blah blah. Seems to me you are the ones who did not do your research before you bought it. I read everything I can about almost everything I buy and i ask questions too. So I bought it knowing what it will and will not work with. No it does not work with your iphone so all you need to do is use the icloud, simple. this has done everything I need it to do and I bought it because I researched it and knew what it is for going in. Oh ya, some have said they cant use cloud because of no wifi, well I fixed that as well, just use your phone as a hot spot and your done BAM!

I have the ipad with the plug in sd reader device, my wife has the ipad mini with lightning sd card reader. I have made a file of wedding photos, taken by various people at my son's recent wedding, and transferred them onto a sd card but neither tablet recognises the card. Any reason why this is happening? This is the reason we bought the readers. All photos are jpeg, no videos. The publicity material suggest plug and play - not for me it isn't!

I'm becoming annoyed at apple's habit of glossing over these accessory capabilities, as well as their assumptions about my wifi access. You can transfer pics TO an ipad, but not off. You must use icloud or dropbox to transfer photos, which seems easy, IF you have wifi, which is not the case at my work or school! To print a single image, I have to plug the ipad into a computer, download the files, then transfer them to the sd card for use elsewhere. All this because they don't even give you an option to transfer ANYTHING off without wifi or a computer, which kinda defeats the purpose of having an ipad. Beware.

    Does what the box says...

    • Written by from DUNLOP

Existing SD card taken from camera and plugged into card reader. Plugged into iPad Mini and after a second all of the photos come up in little thumbnails, allowing you to select one, a few or all to import. Imported photos are NOT resized like others have claimed. I.e. a Canon EOS650D photo was still 5.1mb and 5184x3456 when emailed from the iPad to the desktop. A good product that does what it says (although why couldn't they add a SD card slot to the iPad!).

On my initial attempt to use the card reader it did not work. I had a SD Card that had never been used in a digital camera, but when I used the SD Card that was associated with my camera it work as stated. The SD Card has to be formatted with a digital camera for the item to work.

False Advertising by Apple on "SD card reader"

I had no idea there was a 32GB limit to which SD card it could read. I have a 64GB card and plan on getting a second 64GB card for my holidays, only to learn after the fact that this "SD card reader" can't read SD cards! After thinking I had a faulty product, find through reviews here that there is a limit - 32GB and lower. An overpriced, inadequate product by Apple.

I love this connector. It works perfectly, although I use SD cards only in the 8-32 GB range so I don't have problems with larger cards. I find it especially useful when traveling since I can back-up my photos occasionally, while sampling the local wine or espresso, and then send them up to the cloud each evening.

Bought this to edit/browse photos from my two SanDisk 128 GB Class 10 SD cards...find out it doesn't work with anything better than a 32 GB card. Haven't tried a cassette tape on it yet.

    Really, Apple? Really?

Two things need to be fixed: it needs to read newer cards, and enough with the "has to be formatted like a camera photo" bs. Give us what is most useful, not what is most profitable, or I swear my next tablet will not be an ipad...

    Fails on many levels

If the SD card does not have a simple file structure of 'DCIM/CANOM100' or such, it fails to find anything, so it just gives up. If the software had been written by someone with half competency, it would display the file structure on the disc and give you a choice of where to go to find the files. It would not find the moves on my SD card produced by a Sony video camera because the directory structure was not the simple type. Yet another example of Apples view that you 'don't need to know the workings, we will protect you from them' Poor product Apple, wake up!! You got one star because I was not allowed to give you none.

Doesnt work with 64 gig! Rubbish

If apple had stated that this does not work with 64 gig cards I never would have bought it! Completely pointless me having it now unless they have a magical update coming that will fix the issue.

Wanted to use it to transfer different videos off of my GoPro and naturally with it using quite a lot of data to record HD video I spent a bit more buying a 64gig card.

If it worked it would be a great (but very overpriced) item but now its just an overpriced piece of junk. Thanks Apple!
