If used to connect to my car (Chevy Volt), can I control iPod functions?

The Chevy Volt does not use Bluetooth for music functions, just for calls. The USB charging cable on previous iPhones is connected to a USB port in the car. This allows album cover artwork to appear on the car's touchscreen and allows the driver to select songs, albums, playlists, audiobooks, shuffle mode, fast forward, rewind, skip, etc.
I am trying to determine if the cable that comes with the iPhone 5 will allow the same sort of control. It appears the Lightning to Dock Connector won't allow iPod functions of the iPhone to be controlled (*iPod Out not supported).

    I got so many conflicting answers, I went ahead and bought an iPhone 5. It works exactly as the iPhone 4S did. When connected with the USB/Lightning cable, the iPod functionality of the phone can be controlled by the touchscreen of the Chevy Volt's audio system or the steering wheel controls. This includes displaying the album artwork on the touchscreen. The phone functions are connected to the car via BlueTooth and can be controlled by touchscreen or voice command (once initiated by the phone button on the steering wheel).
    I am very satisfied with the performance.

  • I have a 2011 Chevy Equinox, and the iPhone 5 with this cable works fine - just like my iPhone 4 did. I have full control from the stereo. Mike doesn't display Album artwork though, so I don't know about that part.

    "iPod out" is something else. My understanding is it only effects a few high end BMW's, etc.

  • I have a 2011 Chevy Volt, and this cable works just fine with my new iPhone 5, just like the older connector cable with my iPhone 4.

    Audio, control, and screen data display just as they did before.

  • I have a 2010 Lexus RX350 and a 2013 Cadillac SRX. This cable does NOT display anything but" device not recognized". My son has a 2012 GMC Acadia and his works fine. Go Figure. Hope the adapter works.

  • I do not have a touchscreen on my 2012 Malibu, but I can control my iPhone 5 music from the radio controls, when connected to the USB port with the lightning cable (song info shows on the radio display). I would assume that you will be able to do the same with your Volt.

  • It depends, you will for sure get audio however you might lose the control function. I tried it this morning and audio controls do not work, I just get audio and song detail, I cant skip songs using the controls on the radio or the steering wheel.

  • I don't know about a Chevy Volt specifically, but I have a 2012 Jeep wrangler, which uses U-Connect and has a USB port and it works. I turn on blue tooth on my iPhone 5 for hands-free phone usage. Then connect the Lightning to USB cable from the Jeep's USB port to the iPhone 5 to access my music. It takes a few minutes for the Jeep to read the iPhone's music, but once it does i can use the steering wheel controls or my voice to control the music.
    (it goes without saying that you do need to pair the iPhone 5 to the car first for hands-free calling.)

  • I have a 2012 Chevy Cruze, which should be roughly the same. I use the USB to Lightning connector and am able to do everything I was able to with my iPhone 4 and the 30 pin dock connector.

  • The other end of the cable is USB, so it will work the same in you're car. Just because they change the design of the cable, doesn't mean it functions any different than the previous cable did.
