Answer
Yes when the flap is closed over the screen there is a magnet to hold it closed as well as turn off the iPad if you have it set for that.

On the iPad 2, and The New iPad, the Smart Cover is held in place by a magnet on the left hand side (aluminum), and on the right hand side (glass), so it doesn't flop around.
