Awesome for scrolling and it's fun! ...but

I've been using this mouse for almost a month now and I have both good and bad things to say about it. First of all the concept of the mouse is fantastic! The touch screen top is unlike any other mouse out there and brings a new aspect to computing. Scrolling around 360 degree in documents is excellent. Although it is fun and ingenious, I feel like the quality of the mouse doesn't live up to the Apple standards that I have come to love. Every other product that I have bought from Apple has felt solid and well constructed and performed in the most optimum way I could imagine. Now the top part of this mouse is fine. It the bottom of it that bugs me. The silver plastic on the bottom just doesn't feel right and gives a cheap feeling to the mouse. Another concern and my biggest one at that, is the slidability™ of the mouse. I thought that this device was going to have a cadillac type luxury slide across my mousepad pre-judging by my previous experiences with Apple products. Instead the black rails on the bottom offer no such thing. The slide is far from luxurious. My old logitech mx518 offered a nicer slide. My last concern is the lack of middle mouse button support without third party applications. I'm sort of a purist in this area and try to use as little 3rd party apps as possible when dealing with hardware made by the same company as the computer/operating system. I think Apple should release a patch to fix it so we don't have to use MagicPrefs or something equivalent. Sometimes when working in Maya I will plug in my old mouse just because it's easier and faster to distinguish the 3 mouse buttons to navigate quickly around my objects. Even with these issues I still give this mouse 4 stars because it's just awesome. If they ever do release another version, a more luxurious sturdier version, I will be sure to buy it.

I love the scrolling and zooming functions, however I think the design can be more ergonomic to fit ones hand more comfortably. Also adding 2 buttons on either side to add more functionality would be a welcome addition. I would give it 5 stars if these features were added.

This mouse es very nice, in first touch it feels a little unconfortable beacause is different, but in a while you feel that is really light and smooth to use. I love it, but after the software update, the default leopard speed configuration was great and after the upgrade, the magic mouse become slow and hard to move the pointer faster, it should be twice faster, please apple team, make it possible beacause the mouse is fantastic and the scroll is very nice. If you read that and have the same feeling, write about this...

Don't listen to other reviews Im literally using this on my bed, with no mouse pad of any sort right now and its working FLAWLESSLY. This thing is probably the best things Ive ever bought myself since i got my MacBook Pro.

The only thing that stinks is the price.

Let's start off with the bad points and the reason why it only gets 4 stars. The Magic Mouse doesn't have the same possibility of functionality as the Mighty Mouse did. Don't get me wrong, I LOVED the mighty mouse (except the dirty roller ball). But the Magic Mouse can't invoke expose out of the box, until I found BetterTouchTool, once i found that I bought the Magic Mouse no question. It is a little difficult to hold on to but i find myself moving the mouse to where I want to click then letting go and using it like a touch pad so its not that bad.

On the other hand, the ease in which i can now move around documents is a revelation. It's the same as scrolling on my iPhone. The flick and catch, the swipes actually make this a fun mouse to use. The ability to never have to click the back button is great, it's like having an intuitive firefox mouse gesture, but way better. Overall the weight of the mouse is good, since it is a little hard to hold onto the light weight makes up for it. The fidelity of the right click is much improved over the mighty mouse.

In conclusion, I would recommend this mouse it takes a little getting used. But it's beauty surpasses those little niggles.

I really like this mouse. It works flawlessly and if you use Logic or FCP it's great for scrolling along the timeline with a simple slide of the finger. Although I miss having extra buttons I find I'd rather do without them now than go back to the old style mouse.

I do wish they would release the next upgrade of software for this mouse since the software you get now is very basic. Once they include all the potential moves you could have it'll be fantastic.

Much better than the Mighty Mouse

When I first saw the mouse, I thought it was beautiful. It was very slim and carried a very nice and simple design. There was one thing I thought was going to take time to get used to, gripping the mouse. The mouse looked hard to grip comfortably, but surprisingly it wasn't that bad. It's not like gripping a normal standard mouse, but I was not feeling uncomfortable. It will probably still take some time to get fully adjusted to it, but other than that it's fine. The multi-touch is amazing. I like how you can do stuff just like the things you can do on the glass trackpads on my MacBook Pro. It senses the gestures properly. Overall, I think this is a great mouse. The things I wish they can add is the ability to go to expose with gestures, pinch zooming, and tap to click. It would be perfect if they added all the features they have on the glass trackpads.

I found the mouse too be absolutely a dream to use, the controls are intuitive and movement with the mouse is flawless. But the only problem I have with the mouse is that its extremely fragile, I carried it in my school bag once inside of its case. The mouse didn't fit perfectly in the case and it ended up bumping around in it. This ended up creating many tiny little micro fractures in the mouse and it now looks really ugly.

Great device, but has some cosmetic problems

I've had my magic mouse for the better part of 4 months now and it has not malfunctioned at all with the use that i put through it. the only problem that i have found with this design is the aluminum is slowly corroding away on the sides where my thumb and ring finger makes contact with the casing. the thin gap between the top shell and the bottom shell has a nasty habit of accumulating dead skin cells, and i am forced to clean it out every so often.

other than the above mentioned problem, this mouse is an excellent addition to the mac products i already own.

Since I got my first Mac in early 2008, I've been using a Mighty Mouse (with cord), and then a Logitech V470 bluetooth mouse.

While I've been pleased with both, I never could get the speed set just right (MM doesn't accelerate, V470 accelerates too fast).

After waiting for more than a month, the Magic Mouse finally arrived, and I am very pleased with it sofar.

Feels very sturdy, movement is just right, and it's got a nice affirmative click.

But the best part is the scrolling. Now, I've never been one to complain about the scroll-ball on the Mighty Mouse (cleaned it some, and even took it apart on occasion), but all in all, the scrolling was nice.

But the Magic Mouse's momentum scroll is awesome! Why haven't mice scrolled like this since the scroll-wheel was introduced?

Anyways, I'm very pleased with my new mouse, even if it took a while to get it here.

I love this mouse but have a concern with its ergonomics.

I have tested this mouse numerous times in the past several days at different Apple stores as they haven't yet been available in Dallas, TX.

Like everyone else I was impressed by the multi-tech technology.
The momentum option works exactly as expected.
There is no more roller-ball to get clogged with debris.

After a little experimentation with using less finger pressure you can learn to scroll left-to-right without moving the pointer. The double-finger paging is slightly trickier as you almost have to let go with the other fingers.

If you use Google maps please test this out as the Magic Mouse seems to add a few unexpected zoom actions while navigating the map.

    Button 3 went away.
If you use the Terminal and are used to selecting text and "quick-pasting" with the center mouse button (Button 3) you will now have to select, cut, then paste. Where the "quick-pasting" was just one mouse click, the cut and paste requires four mouse clicks. Dragging the selected text is still an option but requires a little more skill than the "quick-pasting".

I'm not sad about the side buttons going away. For me they were a little awkward to use.

My ergonomic concern is that the Magic Mouse is slightly too flat. I found my fingers starting to ache after 20-30 minutes of use - which never happened with my Mighty Mouse. Flat is great for a track pad, but the difference is that your hand still wants to hold the mouse.

After a year it decided to stop work

I bought this mouse and it worked perfectly for me then a little over a year after (370 days later) it stopped working. I could only click but it would not move on my screen. I called apple and they couldn't fix the problem. I'd be cautious with this mouse. Works well but im bummed that it stopped working so suddenly, not even the logitech that i have for over 5 years failed me...

Yeah it doesn't right click, so if you are putting microsoft or some other big right click using program in your MAC computer, you need a different mouse. And the battery cover comes off once each couple weeks and I put it back on in 20 seconds.
But with my mac mini no problem. I don't even use a track pad-just the tabletop. And there's a bump on my table where a finishing nail rises up on the surface and I hit it about once every 2 weeks with the mouse and knock off my battery cover, put the cover back on then I go pound the nail down again.
I also rest the heel of my hand on the table while I finger scroll. I can rest my thumb on one side and little finger on the other side on the table for rest also. If your hands are small you could only rest on one side.
This is not a horrible mouse like the old hockey puck mouse. Go to a mac store, best buy, etc if you can and try one.
My only complaint: it eats batteries every 3 months so to be ecological you need rechargeable batteries. I've had this mouse 1 & 1/2 years.

When it comes to wanting to do some true graphic design, development, general use, or gaming on your Mac Book Pro, this is a must have tool. It allows you to sit back and work from afar without the need of wires, while having the amazing combination of a trackpad and a mouse, this truly is a "magic" mouse. It is definitely a must have for any mac user.

    I love this ... but

I love the design, the feel, and the speed of using it.
But, I am having big problems with it, after using the mouse for about 6 weeks, the mouse's connection to the computer became unreliable. It seems to happen for no apparent reason, and the issue has progressively got worse. Now it doesn't work at all.
I find this so frustrating because the magic mouse is great, in fact I love my magic mouse ... when it works.
I have read that other people are having this problem too. Apple please sort this issue out because you have what is otherwise a fantastic product.

Fantastic Mouse, but cooks through batteries...

This mouse is absolutely amazing! Make sure after you set it up that you install Magic Prefs and don't add too many genstures or you will totally confuse yourself!

I originally hated the mouse because it didn't come with the buttons that the Mighty Mouse had, however DO NOT BE DECEIVED! This mouse can do INFINITELY MORE then its predecessor. You can swipe three fingers up, down, left or right in order to change spaces, expose or key presses after you setup up MagicPrefs!!! I have had the mouse for about two weeks without turning it off and it is down to 62% from daily use running Apple's rechargeable batteries. My new keyboard is still at 100% to give you some perspective.

This is a fantastic mouse and the only reason I didn't give 5 stars was because I wish the batteries would last longer.

firstly this device is stunning to look at, its like a piece of art. a mouse with a touch pad on top? awesome, and possible the future of these devices, however it does have a few little niggles that may or may not bother you. i would highly recommend checking one out in a store if possible as it is extremely low profile making it uncomfortable for some. obviously the up side of this is its really portable, which is great for all you macbook owners. personally i'm fine with the flatness of it, as are many others. the one other slight issue is that it can be a little difficult to right click, and you may find yourself accidentally doing stuff you didn't want to by not realizing how many finger you have on it. maybe theres a bit of a learning curve and im not fully used to it yet. if you like your gadgets and toys you'll almost certainly love it. its not perfect but then nothing ever is. its certainly worthy of 3 stars plus, and anyone giving a review of 1 or 2 stars are simply reviewing the uselessness of themselves. obviously its a little overprices, but then its apple and if you've already forked out over a grand for a computer then you might as well have its funky little sidekick.

I can only review this based on my experience at the Apple Store. I went in to check out this new mouse because my old Mighty Mouse's trackball is constantly getting stuck due to dirt. I loved that it was touch; no more cleaning the trackball. The design didn't feel as comfortable as the old mighty mouse though. It had sharper edges, but that may just take some getting used to. My fingers didn't glide over the face as easily as I'd like and I found myself accidentally clicking when trying to scroll. I also was disappointed to find out it only had two buttons; left and right click. Overall I think it's a great idea that could be improved slightly. I didn't buy it then because I wasn't exactly sold on it, but I'm getting more and more aggravated everyday with my dirty trackball so I may just pick one of these up.

Great to use but battery life could be better

I have been using this mouse for almost a year now andI love it. I saw in other reviews that people get annoyed by the swiping and other gestures you can use to scroll and zoom - mostly I love those although not all applications use the same direction for zoom (left/right or up/down). Generally I like them. You can switch those off in the control panel if you don't like them anyway.

The mouse is comfortable to use and has a lovely tactile feel to it. As there is no physical division on the surface I occasionally do a right click instead of a left click.

I do get often caught out by the battery life both alkaline and NiMH rechargeables and occasionally it loses bluetooth connection and then takes ages to reconnect. I rarely remember to switch the mouse off overnight but that would only save 8 hours in 24 and would still be be fairly poor.

And a word of warning, don't turn off your bluetooth connection just out of interest otherwise you will need your keyboard shortcuts to navigate back to the control panel and turn it on again or restart or use a wired pointing device (another mouse or graphics tablet).

Overall, using this mouse is such a good experience I would definitely recommend it despite the occasional drawbacks.
