    This mouse doesn't connect consistently

    • Written by from Wellington

There is a lot to lot love about this mouse if only it connected consistently. Just read the product review for those cool things, and they are all good except no point having all those cool things happening when the mouse cuts out too much. Or metaphorically, why build a cathedral on bad foundations?
Magic mouse’s beautiful minimalist architecture is let down by some bad engineering foundations. They are two fold. Firstly, the battery housing is poorly engineered meaning that any non apple batteries can cause cut outs of connection if dropped or collided with the wireless keyboard, which happens enough to warrant mention. Since investing in Apple’s rechargeable batteries to the tune of $NZ51, I am not convinced it helps the situation. I have added paper under the lid to make the batteries fit better, but that is the sort of inferior design neglect I expect from Apple’s ensuing competitors.
Secondly, and the more problematic flaw is the dropping of connection for "other reasons". Apparently they are to do with 2.4GHZ interference (DECT phones) and alike, but hey Apple, come on- didn't you know about this during all design stages?
As I write this review I am kinda using my magic mouse but I have to have a rubbish corded mouse as back up because I cannot trust the magic mouse in doing the job as it cuts out too much. That to me is a design 101 fail.
Its not all bad, when it works it is the best mouse ever - BUT Apple just have to make sure it works reliably.
Apple say “... Once you pair Magic Mouse with your Mac, you can enjoy a secure and reliable connection from up to 33 feet away.”

    I don't.

Until Apple address these issues I can’t recommend it.

    Heavy!

It is very heavy and causes you get serious carpal tunnel, it moves very very slow even on the fastest setting and you have to run your poor hand all over the table... Very disappointed, expected much better from Apple!

Would rather have a wired mouse

Mouse came with new iMac. I think the battery life stinks. Also the sensitivity is bad, it seems that if there is just a bit of dirt or dust on the surface it doesn't perform as it should. The wife hates the scroll and won't even use her fingers on it because it's too sensitive for her. Basically a failure in my opinion.

The cursor is constantly skidding away from where it is supposed to be. Didn't someone at Apple try this annoying appliance out before foisting it on us?

The Magic Mouse is Truly Magical!!!!

The fact that it loses its blue tooth connection EVERY 10 seconds to maybe a minute, is magic. Just to get to this spot in the review took 20 minutes! I am disabled so to return it would have been a hassle. When I first got the not so magic mouse, I came here looking for answers and at one point thought I did find an answer. I followed the directions and it did work better…for one day. Now it has gotten so bad that I was forced to buy a different mouse, which I did and am waiting for the delivery. If I could have given a rating of no stars, I would have. So save your money and the aggravation and get yourself a different Mac compatible mouse! BTW, I know 2 people who threw theirs out!

    Garbage

Listen to the other reviews. Try working with a speadsheet and have the thing zoom your sheet 100 columns to the right out of the blue.

I was in the Albany, NY store a few days ago. They have 8-9 iMacs and a few minis. It used to be that only 2 or 3 had the trackpad and the rest were the "magic" mouse. Now, there is only ONE iMac with the magic mouse. I wonder why that is?

Maybe I'm "holding it wrong". This mouse should be recalled. I want it swapped for a wired mouse.

    Style over substance

    CONS:

    * Having to lift my left finger away from the left button in order to right-click is incredibly irritating when I've been accustomed to the 'normal' pattern of using mice for around 18 years. i.e. left-click/right-click at your leisure, regardless of whether either finger is in contact with the button area.

    * Battery life isn't fantastic, I got roughly 12 hours per week out of it before needing a recharge.

    * If you require precision, this mouse is not for you. It's sluggish and unpredictable.

    * From an ergonomic perspective, I personally found it uncomfortable to use through my working day. The hand should be relaxed when using a mouse, not gripping it in an awkward fashion.

    PROS:

    * Looks pretty.

    * 360 scrolling is nice to use (although if that floats your boat, you may as well opt for the Magic Trackpad instead).

    ----------

Bottom line: I trialled my Magic Mouse for at least three months, and ended up switching to a bog-standard wired mouse out of sheer frustration. My Magic Mouse now serves as a pretty paperweight.

    NO STARS EVER!!

This is the biggest piece of rubbish in the history of computing. This mouses loses its connection with my laptop, positioned no more than 10 cm away, literally every single time I attempt to use it; sometime multiple times. I spend more time switching it off and on again, and clicking and moving it randomly until the connection is restored than actually using it for its intended purpose. I have used more disposable batteries in this device alone than in all other battery operated devices in the remainder of my life, and even with Apple branded rechargeable batteries, which I stupidly also purchased, I am constantly switching them. This is the most frustrating device you will ever own!

Lucky it's a looker as this is a lemon.

A lot of people complain about the ergonomics. I've never personally had a problem with the ergonomics because I stop using it out of frustration long before any physical discomfort can set in. The acceleration/deceleration is poor - shocking in fact. When slowing down it's like moving the cursor through lumpy molasses. And then you find you've run out of room and need to pick the thing up in order to continue the movement because you haven't quite reached where you needed to go.

"built-in software lets you configure Magic Mouse any way you want" the synopsis on this site tells us. This is simply not true. For example, the acceleration isn't adjustable in the default settings. Why, why, why? You can change this setting in the terminal which helps somewhat but this doesn't fix the problem of its inexact, jittery movement to begin with. This, it turns out, can be partially remedied with a mouse pad that my 6 year old $15 mouse never needed. I suspect the rest of its jitters is down to the bluetooth connection (an overrated technology if there ever was one).

On the plus side, the gestures work well and it is nice to look at.

Poor, Apple, poor. Your marketing department sure can sell a story though. All style, no substance.

Buy this mouse only if you don't mind troubleshooting, workarounds and compromises.

    Terrible for spreadsheets

    • Written by from Palo Alto

7 of 11 people found this useful

I really, really want to like this mouse. But it is utterly useless when using spreadsheets. It seemingly randomly jumps hundreds of cells, meaning that I spend more time going back to the desired cell than actually entering information. Terrible, terrible, terrible. I've put my "magic" mouse on the shelf and have mouse a logitech mouse. Not as pretty, but lets me do my work...

    I HATE THIS MOUSE!

I have renamed this mouse the "Phantom Mouse" because it will take me places where my hand did not move it! I am a graphic designer and my job is stressful enough as it is. I don't need this additional frustration.

So thank you, magic mouse. Thank you for making me so utterly and painfully frustrated. What happened to keeping things simple? These "techy" devices are making the simplest tasks more challenging and complicated!

    A crazy product

It drives me nuts. The whole page would disappear when I accidentally touched the mouse without knowing it. You don't a jet to take you to the next block. Nobody in our studio likes it. We all switched back to the $10 mouse with a scrolling wheel now.

    Good idea, badly executed

    • Written by from London

2 of 2 people found this useful

Sounds great on paper but, in practice, this mouse is tiny and unergonomic; it hurts my hand after about 30 mins of use.

Also, the touch sensitive scrolling is far too sensitive and imprecise, therefore useless for anything but scrolling through documents (where precision is less important).

It probably goes without saying that this mouse is useless for gaming, as it's impossible to press both mouse buttons at the same time (FPS games in particular will usually require that you hold down the right mouse button to aim iron-sights and then click with the left to shoot).

For general desktop use, you would be far better off with the Magic Trackpad, which offers much more precision and less ergonomic pain (although still useless for gaming of course).

    Can't figure out the lag

The lag on this mouse is ridiculous. I've tried all of the work arounds, resetting it, moving other blue tooth items away with no success. I can not recommend this mouse.

Do not use for design work

This is the most frustrating piece of Apple equipment I have ever tried using. I was looking forward to the wireless mouse, with less wires running across my desk, but the Magic Mouse is almost impossible to work with when trying to do graphic design, the slightest touch sends it zooming over to the opposite side of the page.

    What Happened?

I have used this mouse for several years with no problems and was very happy with it until recently. Now it has become almost unusable at times due to skipping and lagging with movement. Its unresponsive and freezes up at times. Based on support posts on apples sight, there are quite a few complaints about this. Ive seen many different explanations of the problem, but it sounds like a bluetooth connection issue. Regardless, how has it work fine for years and then seemed to recently start acting up? This should have been fixed. Ive actually got my apple wired mouse back out because I cant take it anymore! This thing is not functional!

    Chronic Wrist/Hand Pain

    • Written by from Dublin

12 of 114 people found this useful

I've been using this mouse for over a month now, and I've never been in so much pain! Even when I'm home from the office over the weekends not using the mouse, my wrist, knuckles, and pinky finger still ache. I've found the only semi-comfortable way to use it (if you're a frequent user like myself) is to place a bit of stiff cloth in the palm of my hand to fill that awkward bit of space between your hand and the mouse. I will be ordering a 3rd party device or at least a mmfixed shortly to avoid any permanent carpal tunnel or tendon damage

    Stopped working

    • Written by from Somerset

3 of 6 people found this useful

The mouse looks nice, but it is not suitable for extended periods of use. Batteries drain in about a month compared to other mice lasting a year or so, It does not work well on google maps (end up zooming out all the way by accident / zooming in fully). And now mine has stopped working properly... have to click very hard for anything to happen. Why can't Apple just make something so simple as a mouse WORK properly, not cost a ridiculous amount of money and just do its job without pretending to be some super-ergonomic god device.
