I like it so much. It was easy to set up. It is far more secure than other router. When I had my old router I was unable to set up passwords.

    Transformation

We have BT Infinity broadband, but were getting little of the anticipated performance benefits, having only a fraction of the advertised speed and also constant dropouts (e.g. watching a program lasting an hour using Netflix would typically dropout 4 or 5 times). Our old MacBook would constantly need reconnecting.

We decided to 'bite the bullet' and buy Airport Extreme. What a difference! MacBook's speed increased 6 times! No dropouts! Apple TV works perfectly. My remote iMac now has a speedy and stable internet connection.

Drawbacks? Rather expensive - but at least for us- very good value. My one real gripe is the inadequate instructions. It took me a little while to set it up. Simple language that assumes no previous knowledge would have helped me set it up in seconds.

    Wasted $300

I bought the airport extreme, expecting it to replace my $80 router that I had. the extreme went about half the distance of my old router and so I purchased the airport express to extend the wireless network but still couldn't reach the distance of my old $80 netgear router. Also, it has a very weak signal unless you are in the same room of it. So basically spent $300 on two routers that don't even withstand against the netgear router.

I purchased this AirPort Extreme Base Station in 5/2009, we have had no issues and 5 computers and 5 phones are running off it. I would not hesitate to buy another one.

Brad M from Oregon City has no idea what he's talking about. I currently have several Airport Extreme Base Stations that have been in full production for far more than 2 years on a college campus without any failures...ever! The product is simple to setup and has excellent coverage. It's easily the best wireless base station I've found.

    Doubled my speed!

My old Netgear router was limiting my speed on line...Airport was able to handle higher download and upload speeds. I also like the USB port, so I will be able to hook up my Canon Pro9000 and both my Dell and my MacBook will be able to access it. Wish I'd gone Apple years ago!

We have limited broadband due to where we live (<0.5mbs) from a bt hh 2.0. Continually getting movies played through Apple TV freezing. Read the review about this product from someone with similar set up who had much improved performance. Decided to take the plunge and see what difference AirPort Extreme could have. Took 5 mins to set up through bridging it with bt home hub (software prompts you through this). Much improved performance. Apple TV is streamed perfectly with no freezing or buffering. Internet also appears to be much quicker as well even with the same broadband connection!!! Definitely recommend this product as he signal is strong throughout the house. Expensive but excellent value for money

The system is flawless, I have 4 iphones Apple TV 2 ipads a playstation xbox a macbook and two pc's all connected and the system never misses a beat. I have a terabyte western digital plugged in that acts as a time machine back up. Seriously the easiest to set up and apps on the iphone can help check its functionality.

Works great in my house. I have a old house with plaster walls and I've had no problems for the 1st month of ownership. Best wireless router I've ever used.. and very simple to set up.

    Poor Lifespan

Airport Extreme is a great product for two years MAXIMUM. After that the Airport Extreme will begin to fail for various issues. After having three fail completely in two years, one for firmware reasons and two for hardware reasons, this product deserves two stars. Even though it is incredibly easy to set up and maintain, the life span is horrible.

This is 2012. A premium priced wireless router that claims to be: "The perfect wireless solution for home, school and small business." This $199 perfect wireless solution requires a separate ADSL modem to connect to the Internet. I'm sorry, but to me a solution implies that it solves a problem.
Whilst I should have read more closely into the specs, I admit that I did not get past the "the perfect wireless solution" and 802.11n. Caveat emptor. You have a beautiful piece of white kit, which you then have to plug into something else, use 2 power cords, and taking up twice the space. That is NOT the perfect solution. Sorry apple, but despite being as invested in the ecosystem as the next guy, you have just seriously failed. Am considering filing claim for false and misleading advertising. The AirPort Extreme is NOT the perfect wireless solution. Without a separate cable modem it is not fit for purpose. I wish I could give 0 stars. I have never said that about an apple product before.

    Caution : Magic at Work!

    • Written by from Sydney

I have 100 MPBS cable internet and have been paying the service provider quite a lot of money for this service and used to struggle to get just 2-5 MPBS over wireless one room away. Also iPhones, iPads used to take seconds more to display information. After checking out the reviews here I decided to invest in the Airport Extreme Base Station.

After installing AE, I get 110 MBPS two rooms away on my iMac and information appears on my iPhones and iPad instantaneously. This has simply transformed internet usage at home.

The previous wifi router we had was a Cisco and it just wasn't cutting it for our household. I purchased the AirPort Extreme and could not be happier. We have 3 MacBooks, 1 iMac, 1 Epson Wireless printer, 2 Apple TV's, 2 iPhones, 2 iPod Touches, 2 Android Smartphones, 1 Wii, 2 Xboxes, 1 Samsung 3D Smart TV, 2 3d Blu-Ray Players, and a lot of airplay speakers on this router and it handles amazing. The speed is very impressive for the load this router carries. Every once and a while we have to restart it but other than it is a amazing product. ONCE AGAIN, WELL DONE APPLE!!!!!

Does not work well with AT&T DSL

I recently had an issue with my internet line dropping. I upgraded my modem and airport extreme and the issue continued. The AT&T technician ran tests on my line and asked what lights were lit on the modem when it dropped. He indicated that there is a problem with the router. I ended up getting an AT&T combo of modem and router and so far so good.

I previously had an airport extreme and did not have any issues with it, it is just recently this cropped up.

Setting up the airport extreme is a cinch. I don't know whether there is an issue with the firmware or not, but it is very frustrating that the line drops for no reason.

Worse Wi-fi range than BT home hub 3.

I bought this as I thought it would have better Wi-fi range than the BT Home hub 3.

It doesn't, it is (slightly) worse. Lots of other great features but the range is worse.

You cannot use it to extend an existing wi-fi network unless the first base station is also an Apple Airport, so it was no good for me. I am sure it is great for other people.

However the returns policy is excellent, they are sending someone to collect it at no charge for a full refund.

    Waste of time

I purchased this item with the primary intent to connect an existing external hard drive, which is connected to my iMac for Time Machine, and enable access to this drive across a network. Despite claiming the supported connection of a hard drive via the USB port. What isn't explained anywhere is the fact this expensive device won't support this functionality, i.e. you can have one or the other, not both. I've wasted my money and should have bought a separate NAS drive.

I've owned at least 20 different models of other routers and wireless base stations, going back to the first home versions. However, the Apple products have been consistently the most stable and best performing. I had to reboot other routers at least once per week, but the Apple routers go months without issues. They cost a little more, but they're dependable.
