Do i have to have airport
I'm getting a mac soon and a wireless printer will i have to to have airport to airprint if i already have a wireless router?

Answer
right, if the printer has been designated as airprint compatible then you will not need this as your mac will find it on your network. However if the printer is not airprint designated then yes you will probably require one. the manufacturers book would tell you if the printer is wifi or not but even if it is, there is no guarantees your mac will communicate with it properly - i had this issue using my router with my kodak, it didnt work unless i used my airport express, cannot explain why
my advice buy a proper airprint printer from apple store and save costs of airport express- Answered by Keneth W

Does it have the same socket to connect an external antenna as the old flying saucer Base Station?
I'd like to use my old antenna if possible, but if it's operating at different frequencies I'd guess that's not going to work...

Using your old antenna will not work as you already guessed. The faster 802.11 n (Draft) standard needs another setup (actually more than one antenna for full speed), which is built into the device.

Answer
You still need a modem device. You can use the Airport as your router, which is what I use. I use the cheapie modem from my telephone company, which then plugs into the WAN port on the Airport Extreme. Works brilliantly. And then I can plug an external HDD into it and I have a time machine :)

Can I turn off 802.11n and just use 802.11g on Airport Extreme?
My wireless ISP uses unlicensed 5GHz radios to distribute internet connectivity throughout our neighborhood. They say 802.11n routers using 5GHz frequencies interfere with their unlicensed radios and do not want them used. Can I turn off the 802.11n radio in Airport Extreme and just use the 802.11g radio as to not introduce interference?

Best Answer
Yes, when setting the radio mode selector in "AirPort Utility" - if the "a only," "b only," "g only," or "n only 2.4 GHz" setting references are not visible to you, hold down the "option" key (alt key) and all the other options will become visible.
The radio mode selector gives you the opportunity to choose the radio mode for both networks.- Answered by Andrew H from Carmel

Answer
The answer is yes. You need to change your DHCP network settings from the 10.x.x.x network to the192.168.1.x network. This worked for me. Good luck!

if i already have a router. can i run an ethernet cable from that router an plug it into the WAN port in the airport extreme for it to get IC?

Answer
Yes. You then decide whether you want your existing router to continue to manage DHCP, if so put the AEx in bridge mode and just use it to create a wireless network.

i have an airport extreme base station and it works flawlessly. one question, is there a way i can see what devices are attached to the base station.
my old net-gear router had a website that i could log in as an administrator and see all of the router statistics; ie attached devices, wep settings, firmware updates, etc
- Asked by Harry M from Fayetteville

Answer
Absolutely. If you open up your airport utility and click on the base station. Then go to manual setup in the bottom left corner of the screen. Under the airport/summary tabs you'll see something that says "wireless clients : #" (# some number of clients connected) if you click on "wireless clients" it will open a new window displaying the MAC addresses of the wireless connected devices. If you want to see LAN'd computers then you simply click on the DHCP clients tab and it will list their MAC addresses as well.

Can I use my Time Capsule to stream video to my iMac and iPad?
The reason I ask is that I am disabled and sometimes I'm stuck upstairs. So I was wondering if I could store my videos and music on the Time Machine, and then play the movies on my iPad.
At present I use the TC to be a backup only. I also have 2 x 1TB external usb drives spare. Can these be connected to the TC for storing the media files on?
Thank you.

Can the AirPort Extreme with a connected hard drive act as an iTunes server for multiple computers?
- Asked by Mark S from Chandler
- Jul 17, 2010
- Flag as inappropriate
Best Answer
It can at a file server. So, on each computer - when you start iTunes, choose to start with option and select a library - and choose the file from the common shared folder.
Notice, this is different from a shared iTunes library using iTunes. A shared iTunes library needs a server serving iTunes.
Best option is to put your media file in TimeCapsule, Run any one iTunes and make it use the shared file from TimeCapsule as the library. Then publish the iTunes library. Now, all iTunes media player in your network will see the shared iTunes library.
TimeCapsule is a shared network storage. TimeCapsule is not an iTunes server.- Answered by Santhosh N from Ann Arbor

Your DSL connection should go straight to the Airport Extreme, there is no benefit from using two routers and in most situations would cause quite a few problems.

Extending Roaming Network, Airport Extreme with APPLE TV
I have a Time Capsule on the third floor of my house in the office. I use this as the DHCP router. Wireless coverage is good on the top and middle floor, however when I get to the bottom floor the signal is weaker, slower and prone to drop outs.
The bottom floor is where I have my older second iMac, a MacBook Pro, and my home theater which has Apple TV. They all can get a weak wireless signal from the Time Capsule, but like I said it is slow and unreliable. I want to create a roaming network by adding an Airport Extreme to the bottom floor. I have heard that a solid connection from Time Capsule to Airport Extreme with Cat6 or Cat5e ethernet cable is the much preferred and more reliable way to do this.
I would need to run the Cat6 cable on the outside of the house, approximately 120 feet down from the office. There is already a Coax cable that makes that same run to provide cable TV to my bottom floor home theater. I would plan to set the Extreme in bridge mode to act as another Wireless Access Point.
Questions:
1. Is exterior grade Cat6 cable available to make this outside run?
2. Will the transmission be affected if the Cat6 runs close to the Coax cable?
3. The Apple TV device will be in close proximity to where I plan to place the Airport Extreme, should they be connected via ethernet port or connected wirelessly?
4. Would I need to set the Time Capsule and the Airport Extreme to different channels?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.- Asked by David H from Vancouver

Answer
I already do this in myself, all of it but run the cat6 on the outside of my house. But there was a time when I looked into running network cable on the outside of a house.
1. Yes, you can buy cat6 that is rated for outside installation
2. Absolutely not, both the coax and the cat6 are high grade cabling. Coax is made with shielded wiring and will not affect your network cabling.
3. My Apple TV is situated about 20 feet from my AirPort Extreme in my basement and it is wireless. It runs Great. Although a wired connection is always nice if easily connected and will provide even faster speeds if you are streaming video to your Apple TV from your computer or an iOS device..
4. In regards to the channels, I just left whatever the defaults were set at and my roaming network works beautifully.
I've also got many other things that are part of my entertainment system hooked up to the wired network downstairs. Hooking up that second airport downstairs gives the added advantage of giving you 4 more wired ports downstairs as well.- Answered by Robert S from Palatine

I have an older AirPort Extreme that I would like to replace. My question is, what makes this better than say a Linksys E Series router?
I am looking to replace my AirPort extreme because it drops my connection at least 10 times a day. I have tried every channel on the device, factory reset it many times, and it just doesn't work. There are no other wireless networks nearby and we don't have any devices here that would interfere with it. What makes the new AirPort Extreme better than the Linksys E2000, E2100L or E3000? Thanks.

Don't just look at the hardware, look at the company standing behind the product.
My Airport Extreme died in the same way the day before yesterday. I looked up the warranty information and found that it had expired. I was very surprised to discover that the AppleCare extended warranty on my MacBook also covered my Airport Extreme. I made a reservation at the Genius Bar at my local Apple Store and they gave me a brand new one.
Time Spent:
Booking Genius Reservation: 2 minutes
Explaining the problem at the Genius Bar: 6 Minutes
Waiting for the Apple Guy to get my new Router: 2 Minutes
Total time spent dealing with Apple: 10 minutes.
I have had a Linksys router die on me while under warranty. The RMA process to get a replacement was horrible. I would rather visit a dentist that go thought that again. I had to call a number to speak to a Linksys Tech who walked me through lots of tests. Then I had to send in my old one in the mail, then once they determined it was actually dead they sent me a new one.
Time Spent:
Phone call with Linksys Tech: 45 minutes (20 Minutes on Hold)
Packaging and driving to the post office to send back to LinkSys: 20 Minutes
Waiting for the dead router to arrive at Linksys: 6 Days (+ $24 Shipping)
Waiting for them to test and send a new router: 8 Days
Waiting for the new router to arrive in the mail: 10 Days
Total time spent dealing with Linksys: 24 Days 65 Minutes.
You do the math. I was lucky to have an old router on hand to use as a backup. Most people don't can you go 24 days without a network?- Answered by Sean C from Calgary
