    Lousy, will try to return

    • Written by from Golden Valley

Purchased this router less than 2 weeks ago. DSL modem has been placed in bridging and this is handling all of the routing. Wireless signal is good. Worked OK for a couple of days. Then increasingly this thing seems to be rebooting and locking up irregardless of what I do. Unuseable. I reinstalled my old cheapy Netgear N dual signal and configured it the same way. In 24 hours I have not had a single issue. I worked at isolating the issue by power cycles of various devices. I have iPhones, macbook pro, iPad, printer, apple TV, ROKU. They all drop out. I also completed a reset to factory defaults and the thing is rebooting regularly. This is strictly an airport issue and the product is no good.

As I attempted to isolate the issue I was very disappointed in the Airport utility as the only means of pursuing trouble. The utility is extremely limited and is of almost no troubleshooting help. You can configure and check signal strength on devices. Beyond that the utility completely void. I do not recommend this product.

Bad power supply on 3 different routers

    • Written by from Murphy

The router is great except for one major issue. It can power off completely once every few days. I have bought/returned 2 of these already and now the 3rd one did the same and I will be returning for another brand. My power outlet does not seem to be the problem, tried multiple power strips and plugged directly into the wall...same result as the router keeps turning itself off. Plus, I have other devices using the same power strip/outlet and those work fine. It is a pain to continuously unplug and restart the router every time this happens. Apple does not know what the issue is, but obviously this is a major problem, so beware.

Slightly better signal than my old router with 5 dbi pole

    • Written by from Wang Burapha Phirom

This is the most expensive router i've ever bought. After reading a lot reviews, I decided to buy this to expand my network area range. But it's just a little better than my current router and some areas are worse.

It's very fast when you can get the signal above 50%. But it's not a good choice for whoever want to expand wifi range at all...

    Simple, Easy, and Reliable

    • Written by from Balitmore

I was looking to replace my n-standard router which was giving me connectivity issues on multiple devices. I have been happy with my switch to the Airport Extreme and look forward to its continued use at home. Setup was a breeze, and while other brands have more customizable features when it comes to management, the available changes are more than adequate for anybody's home network. I have had zero issues with connectivity, the network range has increased without using a repeater, and I feel comfortable saying it is definitely worth the price despite only having it for a few days.

    Great router & NAS works!

    • Written by from Cumming

Network setup: modem - netgear wireless router (connected 8 port switch & airport extreme)

Hardware connected to airport extreme AE is a 3TB WD NAS & an iMac

The wifi coverage provided by AE within the house is amazingly fast. BTW, I have 3 story house including the basement. The good thing is I can now access all my files stored in WD NAS from PS3 (wired thru 8 port switch) and all my idevices (iphones, ipad mini) and MAC computer (MBP & iMac). With this network setup my Apple TV works perfect as well.

Overall, I'm a satisfied owner now of Airport Extreme.

Amazing speed increase from older model

    • Written by from New York

After experiencing increasingly pokey download speeds with my prior (5+ year old) AirPort Extreme, I bit the bullet and bought the current version. It was a breeze to install and get up/running, and the speed increase is dramatic, going from 8-10Mpbs to 216 (!!) Very glad I upgraded.

Product great, packaging not so much

    • Written by from Santa Monica

The router is great, setup easy, made my connection much faster. My beef is with the packaging. Used to be that opening Apple products was a key part of the entire experience. However, when I finally got the outside of the box to slide off of the inside, the router popped off the base and crashed to the floor. Really, Apple? Did you test this packaging? I was lucky not to have broken the item.

Bought this to replace my old d link n extreme router which had an unreliable connection (random disconnections). The airport extreme has more range, always stays connected and is very easy to set up.

    Fantastic Router

    • Written by from Los Angeles

I have 100mb connection at home and this is the only router that didn't drop any speed when using WiFi. After all, what would be the use of paying for 100mb connection if you can't take advantage of it. The range of the router is also fantastic.

Great for people who aren't nerds!

    • Written by from Topeka

If you want a router that takes little to no configuration that will manage interconnecting a bunch of Apple hardware, this is your device. If you are setting something up for other people, family, or friends, who don't know how to use routers, and have Apple hardware, this is your device. Why? Because if you do it right, you wont need to ever help them with router problems again!

No, it isn't for advanced users, it isn't meant to be. If you want to tweak a lot of stuff, or other custom things look at routers that do that. Don't fault the device just because you didn't buy something that does what you want.

Great Upgrade over previous extreme, which was good!

    • Written by from Castleford

Purchased to prepare for when i get new Mac and as I needed better coverage in very large house.

Worked straight from the box and gave immediate improved speed and coverage even on existing 802.11n which is all my old MacBook has. Streams HD from BBC iPlayer where before often struggled to get standard def.

But!!!! Be careful opening the box! I thought the reviews mentioning this must be being picky but I did take note - please do open it over a table or something soft. It does not come out of the box how you expect, or how Apple hoped it would either! If you are standing up and holding each part of the box in each hand as you open it YOU WILL DROP IT! - unless you have three hands and so can catch it as it falls!

A solid, simple and easy to use Router

    • Written by from Calgary

I almost didn't by this router due to all the poor reviews of the product. I felt i owed it to people to try and write a straight and honest review of this router. I have the Airport Extreme and i also installed and have a family member using the Airport Time Capsule as well.

This routers biggest strength is it ease of setup. It takes more time to unwrap it than it does to get it working. You do have to get used to using an app to manage a router rather than a browser but this is part of what makes it easy.

Coverage: I had an ASUS N56U router before this and its coverage of my house is the same as the apple airport. The nice thing is you can add airport expresses to extend coverage if you need. My router sits in between the floor and the ceiling of the upstairs and down stairs and covers all corners of our 1400 sq foot house well with only 1 bar drop on the outer most corners of the floor plan.

Reliability: A lot of people complain about this router not working or being flakey. I have had no problems with the router in the 4 weeks have been running it. In fact our internet went down and i automatically assumed it was the router that was the problem but it was actually our ISP.

Time Machine: I did plug a Western Digital USB hard drive into my router and my time Machine backups are working fine. The first backup did take a while to complete. 340 Gbyte of data took over night to complete. Also accessing the time machine is a tiny bit slower than when it is connected to the macbook but i also have a very old Macbook.

Value for money: While the price of this router is expensive compared to what you get with other routers i will say this. I have not had to reboot the router yet. More importantly Home Sharing and my 3 apple TV's, 2 Apple iPads, and 2 iPhones in the house all work flawless. My old ASUS was always having problems with home sharing requiring constant reboots to get it working. For me this has made this router worth the expense. I will agree with those reviewers that say you can't do as much custom stuff with this router. It is very simple in feature functionality and it is disappointing it doesn't support QOS for things like gaming and voip. That would be my one criticism of the router and its price. Having QOS and a way to VPN into my home network for a router this price point would be ideal.

If your idea of value for money is simple setup and solid reliability than this is a good router. Better than my past Dlink, Asus, and Netgear routers.

If your idea of value for money is high end data network router features this is not the router for you. One thing it does do though is act as a bridge so you could plug it into your high end routers and still get all the perks of the Airport Extreme.

    Finally Wifi

    • Written by from SURPRISE

I am in a location where the only Wifi locations are locked. Recently, I needed to add a router for my solar panels so they could be monitored. The AirPort Extreme is so easy to use and I was finally able to sync my iPhone 5S to my Mac, needed Wifi to do that. Everything is working great and there is no reduction in speed.

    Works like it should

    • Written by from Commerce Township

The installation of this router really was a non-event. Follow the instruction. I attached it to my Cable Modem, hooked it up to my switch, Vonage device, etc and turned it on. Shortly thereafter it was working. Very easy to configure using Airport Utility, add a guest network, etc. Very good range. I broadcast my SSID but have it secured, My only complaint? it costs more than some of its competitors but it is easy to bridge the network and extend the range, Very happy with it

    Throwing In The Towel

    • Written by from Maricopa

Prior to buying this new extreme, I owned 4 Airport Express and 2 Airport Extreme Routers (4th & 5th gen). They worked flawlessly and were easy to configure to match my needs for PC laptops and a bunch of Apple devices. I can count the number of times I had to restart both of my Extremes on the fingers of one hand so when the 6th gen Extreme came out, I could not wait to get my hands on one. AC speed, extended range, dual transmitters and it’s an Apple...what’s not to love?!

My first hint was the configuration interface. Like a few previous reviews say, it is awful. Yes, it is easy but if I wanted easy, I would have downgraded to a Linksys router with their one touch setup gimmick. I took a chance and tried the Airport Utility (AU) software and it found the new router. I was able to configure the 6th gen with it and I got the compatibility warning but I was able to configure security, port forwarding, MAC filtering and the new router seemed stable.

It took a few weeks but I began to notice a drop in speed. After a few calls to my ISP, they admitted to a problem in my area and I got into the habit of rebooting the router whenever I would reboot my cable modem. The way my legacy Airport devices took a long time, sometimes hours, to rejoin the network after a router reboot was my second hint.

Tonight, I got fed up with my slow internet speeds and was setting myself up for tech support’s standard can you connect directly to the modem question. I ran a speed test before the call and my speeds shot up. I put my 6th gen back in the mix and my speeds dropped by 2/3! I rebooted the router and was still slow. I connected through an Ethernet port and my speeds shot up again. I put my 5th gen in place and my speeds are back to normal and so are my other Airport devices.

I have to face reality; the problem is the 6th gen Extreme and my denial of the signs. I can't say that I experienced my devices dropping off my network that others struggle with...just my internet speeds slowing down to a trickle and the legacy Airport devices not reconnecting in a timely manner. I was sure that I’d never go to another router brand but if I want to take advantage of AC speeds, the new Extreme is not the right choice for me.

Solid Router- Fast, Stable and Reliable

    • Written by from Toronto

I've previously owned routers from D-link, linksys and asus, all of which gave me troubles that required me to restart the router on a daily basis.

Two months ago, I decided to give the apple airport extreme a chance and I was surprised by how much my wireless speed improved.

The most important factor (aside from speed) when it comes to routers is stability and reliability; out of the 2 months I've had it so far, I've experienced zero, yes 0 disconnections.

I also connected a 2TB western digital hard drive to the airport extreme and set up wireless time machine backup on 5 of my Macs, also works flawlessly.

This router may be a little more expensive than other brands, but as with many apple products, it is well-built and reliable.

    Simply the best router

    • Written by from Toronto

This is simply the best router ever.

Setting up the Apple AirPort Extreme took me all but 10 minutes. It was so easy I was surprised, I kept thinking was that all, and it was. My internet is working much better and performing optimally now. No more slow downs from too many connected devices. I currently have 14 devices connected wirelessly to the Airport Extreme and it doesn't even flinch. It truly is a powerful machine in a small compact size.

Prior to getting the Apple Airport Extreme, I had two routers covering our home which is approximately 2500 sq ft. The AirPort does such a wonderful job that we even get good coverage outside the home now, including the edge of the driveway and edge of the backyard. It amazing to see one router do all this.

Finally, I have noticed improvements in streaming content from Netflix and Crackle, simultaneously on 2 TVs. With our previous router, streaming content simultaneously would sometimes cause the router to overheat and restart. We no longer have this problem, in fact we have streamed content on 4 devices simultaneously without issue.

I'm really happy with this purchase, especially because how reliable and powerful it is. I would strongly recommend this everyone looking for a top quality router, you cant go wrong with the Apple AirPort Extreme.
