Stopped working after less than a dozen uses

    • Written by from Cambridge

I got less than a dozen uses out of the Lightning Digital AV Adapter before it quit working. As an apple user since the mid-80s, all I can say is this is yet another example of the demise of Apple quality. Well it was marvelous while it lasted!

Worse Than My First Betamax Player In 1982!

    • Written by from Kettering

I bought this adaptor cable - which, at £40 works out at £10 per inch - in order to watch TV and flms streamed over the Net from Amazon Prime Instant Video via my iPad Retina through a Yamaha RX-V671 A/V decoder on to my LG HDTV. I had been trying to use my laptop but in both Chrome and Mozilla there was continuous buffering and stuttering. Before purchasing, I checked with Apple and Amazon who both stated the product would work in 1080p with surround sound. Well, the picture displayed on the screen when "browsing" is reasonably High Def but only in a reduced-size 4:3 ratio in the centre of the TV. However, once you select a programme through the Amazon Prime App and hit "play", the screen expands to 16:9 but with all the definition of a muddy puddle. All movement becomes just a confusion of pixels which, on my 47" screen, are at least quarter of an inch square. Basically, it's unwatchable. So, switch to Safari instead of the Amazon app - no difference except now we are back to continuous buffering again. With a 14Mb/s internet speed I should be getting good quality video - instead I feel like I have been transported back 30 years to the foggy dawn of Betamax accompanied by the cat sitting on the "Pause" button on the remote every 10 seconds. This really is marketing at it's most cynical. This is 2014, this is not rocket science, but I feel thoroughly cheated.

Brought new life to our TV

    • Written by from Madison

Simple product, and does exactly what it says - streams 1080p from our iPad Air. We connected immediately to our 6 year old Vizio TV and haven't had an issue after 2 months of use. We streamed the entire World Cup in HD from our iPad, and we've just started a Netflix account. This has brought life back to our TV since we don't have cable. I'm not sure what all the poor reviews are about. Research your device to see what resolution you'll get. $50 is pricey, but when compared to a cable package? Come on.

Reminder: at this point, iPads put out 4:3 ratio. This means when directly mirroring your iPad home screen, your HDTV will be seriously cropped on all sides. However, when streaming video formats the iPad recognizes (Netflix, World Cup from Univision, etc.) the iPad outputs full 16:9 ratio, filling your screen in HD. You want one of these!

    Works Well

    • Written by from Los Angeles

This adapter works very well, it does mirror what's on the screen of my 5s as well as my iPad Air. I think it's a bit overpriced, but an alright item. I think for the price, an HDMI cord, and / or an AC adapter should be included in the current price.

    Works for a while

    • Written by from Vallejo

I bought this for use in my car with the AppRadio 3. The quality and connection was great at first, now a month or so later the contact is way sensitive. When driving over a bump or moving my iPod at all creates static or disconnection. If using in a car with constant movement I do not recommend this.

    Doesn't work

    • Written by from London

I just bought this adapter, I tried connecting it with my existing hdmi cable and it was fuzzy and so I bought a new hdmi cable. Turns out it's not the cable. The outcome is the same. The adapter is connecting to the iPad, I hear the sounds, see the mirror image of the pad, however, as soon as it is plugged, the TV screen starts to fuzz, then the TV screen colour changes green and then yellow, gradually and very quickly, then it stays like that. Can anyone tell me what the problem is; my TV? Settings somewhere? Cos I really cannot get it to work.

    Nothing HDMI about it!

    • Written by from Cartersville

This is the shoddiest excuse of an HDMI adapter I have ever seen. While it may transfer audio or video via an HDMI, what you get on your screen is not worthy to be defined as High Definition. Do not waste your money on this product.

    Does What It Says

    • Written by from Manchester

I was having doubts buying this adapter after reading the numerous negative reviews; however, I popped into the Apple Store to talk to an Apple Specialist and I am very grateful that I did as he stated he uses one at home and it would work fine for the purpose I needed it for. After using it and having a play, it works with the following apps (the list is not exhaustive) - Netflix, BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, Demand 5 and YouTube. It does not work with 4OD (their fault not Apples) and apparently Sky (Apple Specialist informed me of this before purchase, but since I do not have Sky I was not bothered). The picture is very clear and the sound quality very good, if you want to use your iPad for streaming through your tv then this is the adapter to buy.

Worked great at home, soon the Big Time.

    • Written by from San Francisco

Got it home, used it to connect my iPhone 5s to my Vizio TV and (especially for you one-star reviewers) watched:

Beats by Dre x Colin Kaepernick: Hear What You Want Commercial (couldn't use the URL)

Clear picture and sound, great enough for my eldest daughter to come from the back of the house to request I turn it down. :)

Lightning Digital AV Adapter broke in three months!

    • Written by from wildwood

Very upset that this adapter broke after only three months, sadly i didn't even use it more than fifteen times within the three months. Tried it on two iphone 5s's, iphone 5c, ipad air, and four different HDMI cables. I just did that to make sure some setting didn't mess it up, cause it used to work for all of those devices, but not anymore! Do not buy and if Apple stands by their products, i would like a new adapter or a refund! I have the receipt, bought only three months ago!

    Fantastic Adapter & No Regret!!!

    • Written by from Singapore

I was very skeptical of this adapter despite so many negative reviews here but still decided to give it a try.

Adapter was put to test on both my iPhone 5 & iPad mini retina and both have the same performance.

My main concern purchasing this adapter was for the mirror image project onto my TV screen when I need to stream video from Youtube.
The experience from Youtube is totally flawless. Although the mirror image doesn't stretch to full screen but the moment I tap onto the clip I want to stream, it auto stretch to full screen and HD resolution was received on my TV. It's really awesome and beyond my expectation. I even tried insert one cable into the lightning port and charge via powerbank and it works as well. What can I ask for .........

I rated this adapter 4 Stars if only it allows to charge instead of us getting additional cable for it and price wise will be great if gotta adjust within the S$50 range.

    Good and Bad

    • Written by from Castleknock

Firstly - Overpriced, what's new, all Apples accessory products are overpriced, that's a given.
Secondly - Some program's, Sky Go ect, will not work. To be fair this has nothing to do with this device or indeed Apple, this is because the likes of Sky and others do not want to allow you this freedom for a myriad of reasons, not Apples fault.

I am more concerned that the device works as advertised generally and here I find it to be a bit temperamental. The ideal scenario is I hook it up to the TV, launch the program and watch the video, full screen on my TV, but this does not always happen. Sometimes the video will as I said play fullscreen on my tv but not show the video on the iPad, the iPad screen will show a grey screen with a TV screen outlined. This is what I want.

Other times with the same video I will get what is called Mirroring, where the I video I am playing shows on the TV and the iPad but the video on the TV will be at a much reduced size and not upscaled at all. There does not appear to be a setting that will allow you choose either of these sceanarios, it's just pot luck, this I feel is unacceptable. To be forced to watch a video at a reduced size when I know full well the device is capable of better is infuriating.

Misleading description - does not mirror everything and has limitations

    • Written by from London

The adapter does work, but has some hardwired limitations:

    1. It steams via a built-in chip rather than pure mirroring of 'what you see on the screen' and therefore does not work in every app - crucially some which many people would probably like to use on a big screen like 4OD, Sky go and iPlayer
    2. The resolution is limited by the hardware to 1600x900. Many TVs will upscale this for you over hdmi. some will not.
    3. The compression of the streaming is noticable to me and not adjustable.

    GREAT PRODUCT !!!!!

    • Written by from Tampines

Really nice product just does what it says it's suppose to do.. !!! I was a bit reluctant to purchase it because of all the negative comments... But it just works perfect for my I pad retina and I phone 5 ... + superb picture quality with good sounds... The only negative concerns are that it's over priced and just cannot seem to match the iPad display to the screen... Either it spills over or shrinks too much... anyways I gave 5 stars coz it's a good product yet again...!!!!

    Worksd great!!!

    • Written by from Nahanni Butte

I bought this so I can connect my ipod, iPhone to a hdmi connection, and to my amazement, its works wonders. It works great and the visual quality is impressive. I haven't bought any HD movies from iTunes but the SD quality is great, better than I expected. Simple to work and easy, Im not sure why other people hated it or got poor quality, but mine works great. I love it, especially when I travel and have my movies on my ipod, and I can just simply plug it into the flatscreen tvs in hotels, rather having to watch them on my laptop.

    Don't mind the bed reviews

I just bought one, came home plugged it to my iPad Mini w/ Retina (iOS 7.1.1) and everything worked flawlessly. Image is sharp, audio is nice, when you play a video it becomes full screen. Just as you'd expect it. Very little lag. Also it is 1080p, so don't mind people saying it is 720...

Just what I was looking for

    • Written by from Middlefield

This little adapter is just what I needed. I was looking for something that could mirror my iPod Touch 5 onto a flatscreen TV via HDMI port, yet something portable that didn't require Wi-Fi. Now I just purchased mine, but so far, so good. I like the fact that there is a lightning port so I can keep my iPod fully charged while on the big screen. However, I do agree that this adapter is overpriced because it does not come with an HDMI cable. I am currently using a 4-foot HDMI cable that I had lying around for quite awhile.
