The Red leather is not a dark red as in the picture. The leather is extremely thin and does not clean well. It scratches easy and I am very careful with my iPad. In the future,
I will purchase something that covers the back of my iPad. This product does not. Overall, I would not pay $69 again for this product. It is not worth the money.

Changed from grey polyurethane case to this red leather cover and purchased a clear snap on back protector for £5!! Ipad looks good, the red is different and the leather is definitely a lot nicer than the polyurethane

Bit expensive but if you love your ipad then go for it!!

    Careful with scratches

I really loved my leather cover for the first months - great color, simple, well thought of objet, does what it should do. Yet, I've been annoyed by one thing that slowly became a problem : the suede surface on the inside, that becomes the outside once you open it, roll it up and use it as a stand. Things - dust, crumbs, whatever is on the surface you put it on - tend to cling to it, because it's suede, "hairy". It's difficult to remove little things that get stuck in there. Sure, you can clean the table/desk systematically before putting it on. But I use my ipad a lot, in numerous places. Things tend to get stuck in the suede, no matter how careful you are. And then what happens? They scratch the screen. Very fine surface scratches, sure, nothing overly dramatic, but it's really disapointing. I decided to get an Invisible Shield to protect it - which is a bit absurd : having to protect it from its protective cover... I recommend not taking the leather. The smooth surface of the other cases should avoid that problem.

    BEWARE: STAINS

I loved it in the beginning. Nice color, the deep rich red, one of my favorites then I slowly started to see my case stain red. I have a transparent frosty case on the back and the edges are stained red from this cover. And what is worst is that it takes a long time to happen. So you can't return it. About 2 to 3 months into having this case I noticed the effect, it's cumulative. Now I take it off if I'm wearing white, don't put it on my light sheet covers, or any white thing and definitely keep it out of my more expensive purses. I don't know what else it will stain. Just don't buy it.

Cheeper is better in this case. Get the polyurethane and get a light color, less chances of color bleeding out.

    I'm really disappointed in apple.

I bought this at apple store together with my new ipad 4th gen. The color is very nice for white ipad. The color doesnt stain the ipad like others say. Thats why i waited a month before the review to see if thats really true, and its not. If it has mark just wipe it with a damp cloth or better to use moshi microfiberncleaning kit.
Also bought incipio feather back case to pair and they are really great together coz the incipio holds the smart cover so it secures from falling from the ipad. If you want your ipad to be secure with the taste of style better buy the two!
It worth all the money u spend!!

As much use as an apple Smart Cover!

That's what I have replaced 'chocolate fire guard' or 'concrete parachute' with in my daily vernacular. Whilst my daughter was watching a movie using it as a stand she bumped the table lightly, the magnet failed and the ipad slipped off the table. Thank god we have accidental damage insurance...

Red color rubbed off onto my iPad. Fortunately I had the invisible shield on my entire iPad so all I had to do was remove the old shield and install a new one but I had to pay to have it installed. Can't believe Apple would sell this cover. Very disappointed.

After a few months of use, the case started falling apart in its seams. It appears cheeply glued together. If you can, spend your $70 on another useless thing because sooner or later it will fall apart.

i bought this for my new IPad and gave my son a smart case. I have since bought a smart case for me as well. The smart cover magnet that connects to the iPad is not very strong. It is constantly disconnecting. It is very frustrating. It does a good job of putting the IPad to sleep, else, rather worthless.

Premium product, a tad too expensive

The material and the colour off the RED Leather smart cover is fantastic. It feels like a high quality leather. The colour is fantastic, it pops out when you leave it on a table. It's not feminine, it suits the guys too.

The magnet hinge will leave a mark on the iPad over time, around the back nearby the SIM card slot. I'm not worried about this now but after a few years I'm afraid the mark will get more and more visible.

Overall, great product. $79 is a little bit too much to ask though. It's almost as expensive as the keyboard cases.

The product may have been made for a good cause but is bad for white cuffs. It bleeds on to clothes and has spoilt several cuffs of mine.

I spent a long time deciding whether or not to get the red leather smart cover because I read a number of mixed reviews.

I absolutely love the colour and am glad it's not a red that is too bright or too dark. I’ve had the smart cover for about 4 weeks now and use it quite frequently. I haven't noticed any fading in colour but have noticed a few scratches. I actually like the look of the scratches it think the markings personalises the cover.

Furthermore, I've read that some people's covers have been leaking colour onto the ipad and that the metal hinge wasn't working as well which made me reluctant at the beginning. I thankfully haven't experienced that myself.

I really, really like the sleep/wake function and the stand is super convenient to have.

The downside to the product is that I've noticed it is fraying a bit on the edges and feels kind of flimsy at the folding lines at the front (if that makes sense). I also don't find that the microfibre lining on the inside keeps the display clean as suggested. Additionally, I find the lining gets dirty from crumbs which irritates me because it's hard to clean.

I highly recommend forking out more money to buy the belkin snap shield secure (or a similar product) though as the cover doesn't provide any protection for the back.

Overall, I’m glad I got the cover in the end because it looks awesome with the white ipad. Hopefully it doesn’t decide to break on me any time soon and will sure to let people know on here if it does.

I will never buy another apple accessory. After market is the way to go. I really loved the red color. I bought a red back cover on amazon. The back cover looks great. The Apple Smart Cover looks terrible. I did not abuse it in any way but it looks funky in some areas. So disappointing,

    Works well for my needs!

My intent is to review this smart cover for what it actually is, not for what some thought it was. First off, it's basically a "cosmetic cover", meaning there is protection for your screen, the sleep/wake feature and fold back stand in the broadest sense of the word. What it is not is a protection cover for the front and rear of the iPad. For that, you will need a folio style "case" not a cover!

I find it so unfair when reviewers state that the cover doesn't do this and doesn't do that and the product was never intended for those uses to begin with. It's unfair for those searching for the right cover or case when the reviews are off base due to what they wanted not what they received.

I am very pleased with the minimalistic nature of this cover. It keeps the slim profile that I love about my iPad. I have different cases depending on what I'm doing with my ipad. I have this smart cover in both the black and red leather and love both of them. I'm getting ready to receive two new iPad 4th generations for both my husband and myself and I'll be using the red which is currently on my iPad 2 and the hubs will be using the black one. We both have hard shell backs with a magnetic strip that holds the cover behind the ipad very well.

If you're looking for a smart cover to use mainly as a screen cover with the sleep/wake feature, this cover can't be beat. Just know what you are ordering and judge it for that purpose, please! I have not had a magnate issue for either of my smart covers and the dirt factor has not been an issue either.

I love my red leather cover. It makes me so happy. I got it for Christmas last year, and it is like new. I don't take it anywhere though so it does not get rough treatment. The magnetic cover works great. Snaps right on.

As a person who is always on the go and fan of red I opted for this cover. Over the year and some months I've had this cover I haven't been disappointed with it. Yes it tends to get dirty, but the interesting thing is in time it started to have that more " old vintage" look that I also love. Alot of my co-workers and friends ask where I got it and are surprised when I say "...it's just an old (PRODUCT)Red case." Definitely better than having one of those book look alike covers that some of people around me have. With a little leather care upkeep the case has survived through all this time and like a fine wine is becoming better with age.

Innovative, useful and convenient, no dirt problem here!

I like my smart cover. I was a little unsure initially; I have another case as well to prove that... but I found myself liking the minimalism of the smart cover. I did add a slim polycarbonate case for the back, primarily for grip, but it actually has a metal plate so that the smart cover will stay folded back. My other, larger case, I use when I'm taking my iPad somewhere and need some extra padding. I don’t always use it unless I know the iPad is going to get knocked around a bit. The iPad with smart cover just gets slipped in there for extra protection.

    The good:

-Multipurpose, works as a cover, stand, non-slip backing (when folded back) and actually DOES clean your screen! (I was skeptical)

    -Nice appearance, minimalistic design.

-High-quality materials. The leather is excellent quality and soft.

-Stays clean. I did not have the problem with grime that others seem to have, but I also don't take mine into dirty places without extra protection. It only covers the front; you shouldn't do that anyway.

    The not-as-good:

-The magnet holding the smart cover to the edge is not very strong. You certainly shouldn’t pick up the iPad by just the smart cover. However I had it come off my first iPad several times just as I was folding it back. Interestingly enough, my iPad has been replaced with a new 4th generation model, and this problem is nowhere near as bad. The new magnet strength is about 3/4 of the way between where it was, and where I’d like it to be to be “perfect.” In my opinion, for something like this, I should have to expend some effort to get it off, so that it doesn’t fall off accidentally.

The only reason why I purchased the leather one, was because I wanted a red one! It's a great cover, however it scratches WAY too easily and it is not durable at all.

Why apple makes a red urethane smart cover for the mini and not for the regular iPad is ridiculous! I guess I'll have to look elsewhere.
