I can't understand why the vga adapter doesn't show the home screen. It' s like having only the possibility to look at a nice car but Not to enjoy driving it. For presentations it is essential. The workflow is very bad now.

Very disappointing. May be good for presentations via a projector but does not do what it promises re playing movies. Should be able to use it like a normal VGA connection.

Very limited to the point where it is useless. I hope iOS4 will make it more useful.

Wish I had read the reviews before purchasing this useless cable. The product description says you will be able to watch movies and slideshows. But it does not say that you will not be able to watch your purchased itunes movies. If you are looking to watch your purchased movies from itunes DO NOT BUY THIS CABLE. Complete BS!! I wish I could give it no stars.

This product totally disappoints because it is very limited in USE.
Only can play very , very selected movies.... I have not been able to find a movie it can play incidentally!
Those you purchase from iTUNE does NOT get projected ! You get a message telling you it is not authorized to project the movie!!!
If you want to play TV shows from iTune, seemed to work. Not sure what the logic is allowing TV shows but NOT movies you purchased legally?
Also, if you had purchased your own DVD movie and ported to iTune library, guess what it does NOT play as well! Only good for Slide shows and CANNOT project any APPS whatsoever!
Like all those who has left review, I am feeling utterly CONNED!

    No Movies!

    • Written by from CALOUNDRA

Sadly, the iPad to VGA adapter failed to present (iTunes downloaded) movies to my TV as claimed. A call to Tech Support ended (so far) in a suggestion that it (probably) won't display HD movies... There is nothing on the iTunes movie download site that indicates HD or SD...? Only purchased this unit so that I could view my downloaded movies on a big screen. Poor form guys. There needs to be a better description of the capabilities on the product pack... Awaiting a researched response from the tech boys.

I dont care to use this as a movie player to my students, and powerpoints only go so far. I want more math applications to use or the ability to show what I am doing on the apps that do show what i want. For crying out loud, I cant even use the scientific calculator on it. Why would apple not allow direct mirroring? Maybe I should of bought a laptop...

Wow it is very rare that apple gets a product wrong. But when they do they go full bore with it. This product is designed to only allow specific apps to be displayed not just a copy of your screen.

    Apple VGA cable why buy?

    • Written by from Sydney

I purchased an iPad wanting only a few things:
    - a device that I can watch shows on... It does this well
    - a device that I can watch movies on my television... Why can't it I paid for it... And the accessories to do this.. It's one very huge let down... To push this accessory and function and have such a huge short coming is disappointing to say the least.

Come on Apple fix this problem immediately!

I got a grant to buy iPad and the connector. When I hooked it up to the VGA projector and just cannot let it projected and worked. After I reviewed the comments here, I got it (only for playing some movies). and it costs 30 bucks. :-(

It is totally over sold. Nothing in the sales materials point out that it does not display the iPad screen! It only displays output specifically sent to the dock port by the app. So I can't use it to present my actual interaction with the iPad.

When I first purchased this product it worked fine for playing movies and viewing picture on my LED flat panel television. The first time I updated the software on my iPad after buying the new t.v. it quit working. I receive a message on my t.v. that states, "this device (my t.v.) does not have permission to view files from this device (my iPad)". My assumption is that Apple is preventing the use of some of these newer televisions because that are coming out that have internet capabilities and provide their users with their own applications.

Bottom Line, save a few dollars for the next Apple product that comes out that we all can't seem to live without. lol

Add me to the list of displeased customers who wanted a device that would connect the iPad to a monitor or projector and allow you to watch rented movies on a larger screen. With the device attached, you get a message that says "attached monitor not authorized". Yeah, it's probably there somewhere in the fine print, but come on. Caveat emptor--even with Apple.

...how useless this device is. The quality of video is not even close to war shows on the iPad. Also doesn't output anything other than video. I already have a digital movie output device. I would've liked this to be able to do more than output a video. 100% disappointment!

I would normally read reviews before purchasing anything, not this time and I really should have! I bought the adapter today and just assumed I would be able to connect it to my TV and watch anything that I had on the iPad. I even thought I would be able to watch BBC iplayer. Not so. I can only watch movies I have stored in 'videos' and that’s it. Very disappointed. Maybe there will be an update in the future that will allow the adapter to be used to its full potential. There is no information on the packaging either that explains the limits of the adapter. I feel a bit cheated to be honest.

Does not do 'what it says on the tin'.
This should be 'WYSIWYG' in that whatever is displayed on the IPAD should also be displayed on the external screen. Does not play movies.
Very misleading purchase information. I feel like I've been conned.

I was not aware this would only work with video... I thought it would mirror the screen and it's not the case. I hope the next software udate fixes this feature.

Reviews that say "READ" are naive!

    • Written by from Hornby

58 of 68 people found this useful

Yes all it says is movies and slideshows, but it doesn't say ONLY moves and slide shows.

If they released a product that mirrored everything on the iPad and iPhone screen, it would still only say something like "view movies and slideshows (maybe pictures to) on your larger screen".

It's unfortunate that people need to find out the wrong way about products that should do more.

Apple releases far too many products that are limited...I wanted a cinema display until I found out it to is limited...for shame Apple...for shame.
