Glossy = Color Depth and Accuracy

For those that are disappointed with the glossy display, you must not be familiar with the elements that are involved with design/photography/film work. The glossy display, while annoying if you work with a window that is behind you, is a less intrusive design, as a matte display is literally a layer of extra material between your eyes and what you are working on, creating less accurate tonalities within your art.

For those experiencing eye pain, you are probably not used to the size of the screen and are also most likely sitting too close to the monitor. These are not simply for surfing the internet and are most definitely not for reading large amounts of text documents.

    Best Monitor I've Ever Owned

I've owned many monitors over the years, including 3 high-end color calibrated monitors (just recycled a 20" CRT LaCie). This Apple monitor is far and away the best I've ever used. The clarity is super sharp and the color is spot on. Additionally, I love that it turns itself on/off.

Everyone seems to complain about the glare. As a designer I've always worked in low lit rooms and I've always customized hoods and blinders for any lights anyway, so I don't personally have any glare problems. If I were working with my back to a window -- that could be an annoyance.

    Love it or hate it?

I read that either you love it or hate it, the only hate stems from a reflection coming from this amazing screen. The quality of the chassis, the glass edge to edge, the pixels, the design and look of it. I have two 27s next to my HP 2509 HD connected to my PC and the mac eats its lunch...I looked at the Dell 27 and the Samsung "plastic". OK theres a reflection, but there is also no better monitor on the market or I would have bought it...

    Outstanding in every regard

Like many, I spend time reviewing the responses of other owners before I buy something. In this case, I'm surprised that a number of people were even slightly disappointed. Although there is a glare similar to that of an LCD or Plasma television, it's not bad and can easily be overcome by adjusting the brightness higher on the monitor.

Overall, the display is phenomenal. The results are sharp, the colors are near perfect and esthetically, it's great looking. I am an avid photographer, so I had been considering other brands to hook up to my new MacPro (NEC, etc.), but I'm thrilled that I chose to stay with Apple. I purchased this as a replacement for an outgoing 30" Apple display and my only regret is that I didn't do it sooner.

I can't imagine anyone being disappointed with this product. I would give it 6 stars if I could.

This display is awesome but the only complaint that i have to say is that the sound playback is buggy its hit and miss sometimes it likes to work sometimes it doesn't... same goes for the mic it works and then it doesn't. So far i have not found a rhyme or reason why this is happening...

It is so nice to work on such a nice, clear screen. After working on the laptop screen for years, this really makes getting work done so much faster.

I just got mine a couple days ago, and it's wonderful! the sharpness, the brilliance, the pixel resolution, the vividness of the colour -- it looks like the image on the screen was printed on, not composed of pixels.

I now have this as my primary, and a 24" acer 1200x1920 (it's rotated 90º) as my secondary. I was happy with the acer before i got the Apple, but beside the Apple it looks terrible by comparison.

A couple complaints: (1) the cable is a bit too short, maybe 4' long? If using a Mac Pro, the tower has the be near to the monitor to work. (2) There is no provision to replace its base with an arm and there is no pivot -- so the monitor cannot be rotated and must sit on the desk. I want my secondary monitor to be tall, not wide, so, while this monitor is a terrific primary, it is unacceptable as a secondary.

Many people complained about the glossy display. If you have control over the room lighting, the glossy display is actually very nice as a matte display interferes slightly with the picture. Glossy is annoying in a brightly lit cube farm though.

Best display I have ever owned!

Many have wondering if the steep $999 price is worth the money. After spending several days with this display, I can say that this is 100% worth the price. First of all, the screen is crisp and beautiful, the best I've probably ever seen. While there is a ton of gloss, I am used to it from my MacBook Pro. If you have sensitive eyes, this would not be the right display for you unless you are able to find some sort of matte screen protector. The sound quality is excellent for built-in standards. It's loud, deep, and crisp. My only real complaint is the fact that my MBP must be charging at all times. When I take out the magsafe adapter, even with the MDP cable and USB cable plug in, it disconnects from the display. Other than that, I would highly recommend this to any Mac user looking for a gorgeous and sleek looking monitor, unless they have sensitive eyes and/or cannot stand gloss.

I've had problems with the audio dropping out, and Apple hasn't been able to fix it. Some of them work, and Apple tech told me, and some of them don't. Mine doesn't.

I have never understood why "graphical designers" work in bright artificial lighted areas.
Nothing hinders visual color clarity and judgement more than artificial light, or any light for that matter.
The only light I want to see when hacking away at my graphical work is that of the display. Which is why I work in low light areas, or no lights at all.
For me, this display is beyond words. It is truly an amazing spectacle to admire upon my desktop.
I am considering moving my desk to another room where my working area would be in the center of the room. That way, I can walk around the desk and see this display from every angle. Yes, it is THAT beautiful.

I'm a pro photographer and having this screen is great asset.
Yes, there is a problem with reflection, but with any screen you should good lighting condition. The colors are really nice and my photos looks great and sharp. It's really nice to have only one cable on my table that also charging my MacBook Pro.
I returned my new Dell U2711 27' HD UltraSharp 2 month age just because it was hard to see if the image is sharp or not.
Apple display is one more great product that you mast to have for photography business.

    Glare Glossy

    • Written by from Bushkill

39 of 56 people found this useful

I have to agree with the comments about the Glare on these Apple Cinema Displays. I know it produces higher contrast, but the reflective nature of this choice is too high of a price to pay. Apple should offer an option for those of us who don't want to work in a dark room in order to use these with out distracting glare for 10+ hours a day.

Apple offer an option as these are Pro Display purchased by professionals who have other options on the market from other major Display brands

    Great improvements over the 24"

I owned the 24-inch Cinema Display for about two years, and just today upgraded to the 27-inch. I have to say, this is a wonderful improvement over it's predecessor. The auto-dim feature was sorely missed in the previously display, so I'm super pleased to see it added to this one. The glass extends all the way to the nether edges, which of course looks great, but makes wiping off dust a breeze, since the dust will no longer snag the bezel. The display is just as bright and awesome as the 24-inch. IPS rocks. It's pricey, but in my opinion, worth it.

    Best Display I've ever owned

This is easily the best display I've ever owned. I read all the reviews and horror stories about the glare, but decided to buy it anyways and I'm glad I did!! The monitor resides in a well lit room with a window directly behind the monitor. As long as sun isn't directly shining onto my face, the glare isn't noticeable at all. After reading reviews here and elsewhere I thought it would be horrible, but it's really not bad at all, low enough to be a non-issue.

This is a fantastic monitor, bright, detailed, crisp with fantastic color. I will definitely be picking up a second one of these for my desk. Best computer purchase I've made in a long time.

Good on Paper - Bad in real life

    • Written by from Chanhassen

I own a web business and am in front of a screen for 16+ hours/day. I decided to go "all in" on Apple and am using a MBA 11" with the T-bolt 27" display, in addition to the iMac, 2 MBP's and Time Capsule, AppleTV, Airplay, iPad, etc. Hardware works together flawlessly which is why you buy Apple. It never occurred to me I'd have problems...

Although I LOVE the plug & play with the MBA 11, crisp image, sound, etc., I HATE the fact it makes 11 pt. font look like 6 pt. font. And the headaches have become unbearable. I've tried apps (flux, sunvisor), font smoothing, brightness, etc. It is too much to take and I'm thinking about dumping it. I don't have reflection problems that I notice - i can see the screen fine and don't focus on seeing myself or background. But the pain is brutal.

What am I missing? Am I the only one? Is it possibly the MBA causing these problems on the Tbolt 27? Apple store guys are clueless.

    Good, but has issues.

Glossy screen aside (it's a personal preference depending on your usage needs), then this is pretty good. It really works well being seamless with any Mac due to the discrete, integrated, cabling.

However, a couple of issues. Firstly, the sound cuts-out too often (see kbase: TS3602); after a while can be rather annoying. Secondly, importantly it needs Thunderbolt, as likely most users using this are working with large file sizes, so will want to use new Thunderbolt devices when they come.
A further minor point here with Apple's direct store pricing (adding the recent VAT increase, turned this into 918 quid), where many other online suppliers are asking c.840 for this; this difference isn't small change. it's pretty unusual for Apple products, and I think most users would expect Apple's pricing to be fairer accordingly. *However* this price range is fairly GOOD compared to the competition at similar quality levels.

    Overall recommended.
Can't wait for Apple's screens with "larger resolution" &/or those big enough for "TV watching" (say, 35"+ screen sizes), lol! :-)

    Missed Again

So I bought a new system and along with the Mac Pro a 27" monitor. Seems as if Apple has turned into a even bigger money grabbing w----re, let me explain. You see they made the chord on this monitor only 3 feet and realistically you must have the monitor right next door to the display in order for the chord to reach. What a horrible mistake unless of course you purchase a additional extension cable. What a piece of work.. can you imagine having to buy additional gear to get this to function. I wanted to send it all back. Honestly I have never been more disappointed. The monitor is nice except the glare can get to you after a few minutes. It is brighter than the 30" but not as sharp. I would caution anyone to at least have a look at it at the store before plunging to purchase this item.

In reading the low ratings of this unit it brings to mind something that I have always thought about buying high dollar computer hardware. "DO YOUR HOMEWORK". This monitor is amazing, although it is set up to work with a fairly narrow product line.

If you have mini DP, and need the resolution it's flat out the best monitor you can buy.

If you don't like glossy displays, or have many light sources in your work area, this might not be the display for you (or you might want to look into the matte overlays available - just google it)

Personally, I like the contrast that comes with the glossy Apple displays. The color rendition if amazing, and I have had no problem using the glossy Apple displays for professional photographic color work.

Try it before you buy it, but as far as I am concerned, this is the best display out there for the money (provided you have the hardware to drive it)

Great display, very accurate, though expensive.

I'm a pro photographer and don't have issues with the glare or the colors/saturation that others are complaining about. However, I always calibrate my displays for accurate color, brightness, etc. (which every pro should do). As far as the glare is concerned, I don't edit photos in bright rooms and never have-- ambient light will throw off color accuracy for any monitor.

When I calibrate the monitor, the validation results are always within a very small margin of error, which was never the case with other monitors I've used. That gives me a lot of confidence in my display.

The only downside is price. It's a great display, but like everything Apple, sometimes I do chafe at the premium.
