Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter
Does the job but is very awkward
Written by NB from Nottingham
Dec 15, 2009
This does the job of connecting my MacBook Pro to my LG monitor just fine.
The problem is that because the cable is so short it's very awkward, it would be much better if the cable was perhaps twice as long. At the moment the bulky section just keeps getting trapped behind the desk.1 of 1 people found this useful

READ THIS BEFORE YOU BUY!
Written by GO from ARVADA

This adapter will only fit DVI-D connections. It will NOT fit a DVI-I connections!!! This one simple fact ruined a presentation in front of hundreds of people for me. The old MacBook Pro was able to connect to DVI-I, but not this one. Do yourself a favor and make sure that you will be using a DVI-D connection. I'm still reeling about this...
This adapter should have been included with the MacBook Pro, period. You would think that for $2400 they could at least throw in an adapter for their proprietary display port.21 of 26 people found this useful

Only reason it doesn't get 5 stars is cause it's overpriced, works perfect with my old school Apple ADC 23" display that's hooked up to another ridiculously expensive ADC -> DVI Adapter

Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter
Works perfectly
Written by LC from Panama City

While I always hate having to buy extra bit-pieces, this adapter worked great. My DVI-D cable fit snugly with screws mating with the adapter as expected. Interesting to see folks rating this adapter negatively because they were too ignorant to check their DVI cable flavor before buying this item. Know what you're buying before putting the money down......a trite but extremely valid thought.

Mini Display Port to DVB... not DVI?
Written by LJ from LIPHOOK
Dec 7, 2009
This DVI adapter works perfectly as a a way of driving an external digital display using a DVB cable but it does not have analogue output (those 4 pins surrounding the big flat pin). This is a problem for me if I arrive somewhere that they only use analogue connectors for the lcd projectors.
Life should not be this complicated - after owning many macbooks I now have a collection of useless external monitor cable adapters.
I think a DVI cable carries both analogue and digital whereas a DVB cable is digital only so maybe this product description is misleading?1 of 2 people found this useful

Mix up causes problems
Written by DW from Freeport
Dec 4, 2009
For some reason Apple uses 2 different ports to be able to use an external monitor, what your computer has in it is the type of adapter you buy. This mini displayport to DVI looks different than the mini dvi port plug. If you buy the correct adapter it will work. The best way that I found to be able to tell which one to get is to search the Apple store for the Mini and look at the I/O ports on the back. The MIni has both. Just see which one matches your output and buy that adapter. Hope that helps.

Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter
doesn't fit
Written by AK from Falcon Heights

This Mini DisplayPort doesn't fit into the DVI adapter. There are 4 pins around the flatter pin on the DVI adapter that don't have a hole to go into and so it's just no possible for it to fit in. I am very disappointed.

Not all interfaces created equally

Just a warning:
I purchased this to use with a Dynex DVI to VGA adapter. I could not use it. Dynex has extra pins around the wider and flat "pin"on its DVI interface that the Mac DVI interface does not support.14 of 18 people found this useful

Adapter works fine as long as you force a good connection.
Written by SC from LOS ALAMOS
Nov 24, 2009
I'm very happy I read the negative reviews which alerted me to possible problems. Connecting the female DVI-D to a male DVI-D to HDMI cable was a bit of a nuisance since the fit was EXTREMELY tight. I very carefully forced the two connectors together. The amount of force required to get a good connection (the connector bodies touching) is very much more than would be ordinarily expected. But once the connection was made, the secondary display appeared on my Sharp Aquos 52" TV. A 2m Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable would probably sell well.

Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter
Poor
Written by MS from Silver Spring
Nov 11, 2009
This is an Apple product and I am an Apple evangelist and have been for many years. Imagine my disappointment when something as simple as an adapter doesn't. What's the problem? That's even more disappointing - it doesn't make a secure connection between my Cintiq and the adapter. On any DVI female connection, there is a slot for the "blade" pin to go into; with two regular pins above and below it. On our Apple version, the holes above and below are simply too small to accept those pins.
It just doesn't fit. From a company that engineers it's laptops from solid blocks of aluminum, I'd expect a little better. If I could give this zero stars, I would - a complete waste.31 of 44 people found this useful

Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter
Connection is not solid; picture snows or blacks out.
Written by DN from Belmont
Nov 7, 2009
I am using this with a late 2008 MacBook (aluminum).
Bought two adapters. First one was awful. I connected the cord to the adapter with varying degrees of snugness. No matter what I tried, it would not maintain a connection. The screen (Samsung SyncMaster) was either black, snow, or worse and equally often, it would would just constantly flicker/sorta oscillate between my desktop and snow (many times per second). There was no consistent pattern to get it to maintain a picture (I mean, I tried to wiggle the adapter), which meant that it wasn't the actual mini-display port for which I was having the problem, and that it was the DVI side of the dongle that was having issues. Sometimes I would get lucky, and it would hold a picture for 10 minutes (this happened twice). I wasted four hours on this defective product. I tried switching the DVI monitor cables, but the situation was consistent (and for the past year, the cables have worked and are working just just fine connecting the monitors to the desktop PCs).
Next, I bought another adapter. This worked much better for the most, but it is still not perfect. I've only used the new one for a day, but I am very concerned that it will last, and that it will soon regress to the defective performance of the first adapter that I bought. Once during the day when the new adapter shifted, I did lose the picture on my monitor. That's how I know things are not perfect.
Might try buying a third adapter.16 of 19 people found this useful

I had read all the reviews on the Apple Store before buying this adapter. Turns out, it doesn't work with my SyncMaster 940bw, even with a brand new DVI-D cable...
I have had it with Apple...Not only does this adapter is too expensive, but also it simply do not do the job.
Thumbs down on this one.34 of 44 people found this useful

Be sure your battery charger is attached to use this adaptor
Written by EO from Lowell

At first I thought this cable didn't work. Well... unless your macbook pro is attached to its charger - it won't work. It will work for a few seconds - then lose the external monitor signals.
Once I hook it up to the charger - it works fine.12 of 16 people found this useful

I bought a MBPro with the intention to use it with my Optoma projector using a DVI-D connection. (I confirmed with Apple whether this would work, of course, long before I decided to purchase. And the answer was YES.) Well, this adapter DOES NOT work! I just wasted several hours trying to figure this out and sifting endlessly through forums to find a solution. A LOT of people have the same problem. It seems like Apple is stumped by this one!
I'm a first time Mac user on his first day of usage (TODAY) who wants to convert to Mac out of his frustration with Microsoft products. What a disappointment! Apple, please give me a solution or give me a refund! NEGATIVE FIVE STARS!!!44 of 64 people found this useful

My old MacBook Pro worked perfectly with my Dell 30 inch display. This new MacBook Pro with this Adapter will not bring up higher than 1280 x 800.
Why Apple is going backward is a mystery to me. Applecare says it can't find any way to select the NVIDIA 9600 using this adapter. WHAT??? The same people that developed the iPhone can't figure it out? Unbelievable.
The supposed fix is buying the Dual DVI Adapter at $99. Can I get my old MacBook Pro back???13 of 24 people found this useful

Mini Displayport to DVI Adapter
Written by RF from Rancho Palos Verdes

The Female DVI-D Adapter end has limited compatibility with many other Male DVI components. ie. The apple DVI adapter end does not have the necessary holes for the additional 4 pins found in many Male DVI adapter ends. (I learned the hard way). *FYI: You may save yourself time, money, & hassle if you buy a more compatible 3rd party adapter w/ the 4 holes in the beginning.

Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter
Expensive but works with digital displays
Written by DF from Champaign
Oct 7, 2009
While this adapter is overpriced, it does exactly what it says it does. In another review a user states that they are frustrated as this adapter drops the analog signal. This is NOT true.
Mini DisplayPort can NOT do analog to begin with.
If you notice, Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapters use a chip to convert the digital signal to an analog one. This adapter does NOT have that chip.
For $30 Apple should just make a Mini DisplayPort to DVI/VGA hybrid adapter to avoid consumer confusion, but if you have a digital display, this will work perfectly.
Minus one star for consumer confusion.16 of 17 people found this useful
