Apple iPhone 3G Dock
RIP-OFF!
Written by BM from Navarre
Nov 22, 2009
The only reason I purchased this device was because I needed a new cable. I figured that I could just pay the extra money for a dock setup, instead of buying another power brick.
The worst part about all this was that the packaging was big enough to precisely hold a dock and USB cable. Why the wasted packaging space, and the $37.61 for what might as well been a small pointless paper weight. You can buy the cord itself in the online apple store for $19.95 +tax.
A worthless smug upgrade!13 of 22 people found this useful

Overpriced, doesn't work well.
Written by IE from Richmond

It's too light. You can't remove the phone from the dock one-handed, because the it stays stuck to the bottom of the phone.
Also doesn't come with a cable, so add $20 if you need to actually connect it.32 of 36 people found this useful

Apple iPhone 3G Dock
prevents iphone from charging while imac is in sleep mode
Written by TH
Oct 1, 2009
When your iMac goes into sleep mode this docking station stops your iPhone from charging. This is a major problem if you are hoping to use this doc to charge your iPhone over night as the battery will continue to lose power if your iPhone remains on. The interesting thing is if directly plug your iPhone into the standard USB chord included for free when you purchase your iPhone (detached from the docking station) your iPhone will charge while your iMac goes into sleep mode. That being said the only value of this docking station is the esthetics of having your iPhone stand upright, but in my opinion the value this provides is far less than the problems this product causes related to charging your iPhone.

Apple iPhone 3G Dock
Expensive and doesn't work with Incase unless you pull the bottom off
Written by SH from New York
Aug 28, 2009
I was about to buy this and found out I have to open the bottom part of my Incase case for it to fit. This is a pain and the repeated opening of the case weakens it so it opens too easily. There are after market docks that do more and cost less that will work with an Incased 3G.
I ended up taking my old original iphone dock apart by removing the plastic cover. I must have dropped it since I initially saw a space under the front side of the plastic case. I pryed up the front plastic cover from the thin base enough to clear the bottom thin socket then pulled the base forward from the case so the back sockets cleared and lifted the outer plastic cover off. I was left with an industrial looking but fully functional universal dock. I may get my tools out and cut the front 1/3 off the outer plastic case so I can use the back part of the cover but I am not sure it is worth the work or will look any better. There may be other ways to cover it but the base is fairly well enclosed without the plastic cover. It works just fine and is quite stable and has an output jack. Good luck! Recycle, reuse and save money.23 of 45 people found this useful

What's the point?
Written by DL from Hillsdale
Jul 22, 2009
The best thing this dock can be used for is to charge/sync your iPhone while it sits upright.
There's a line out jack, but you can't control the volume from your iPhone. Volume must be adjusted from the powered speakers. I don't know why they would take a feature like that out? Doesn't make sense.
It doesn't come with a cable, which I already knew, but it is pretty pointless if there's not an extra one.
Again, the only thing you're really getting out of this dock is that you're charging/syncing while the phone is standing upright.94 of 128 people found this useful

Not worth the money
Written by CG from Puebla
Apr 11, 2009
For 29 USD, what you get is a simple dock, that is no more useful than the usb cable alone, apart from it's looks when it is in your desk (and it doesn't include an extra cable).. If the 30 pin connector would allow for video output, this would be a whole different story.. but it's not the case. For 20 USD more, you can get the universal dock, which is capable of doing video output, includes an apple remote controller and also gives you the neat looks on your desk.
A dock this simple, should be offered in the phone's package, just like the first iphone, in which it was a nice addition.. not an expensive, almost useless accessory like this one.108 of 126 people found this useful

The iphone keeps jumping out of the dock, and you have to press hard, too hard onto the iphone to get it into the dock, then it quite literally jumps back out again...Not impressed.

Will not work with protective cases
Written by RH from colorado springs

I received this as a gift and can't believe that apple wasn't forward thinking enough to design it for use with protective cases. In order to use it I have to remove my case.

Apple iPhone 3G Dock
No AV out
Written by CR from London
Feb 12, 2009
Bought this dock from the apple store on Regent Street, along with the 'Component AV Cable'. I even spoke to a member of staff to check that everything would work OK. When I got it all set up at home I found that the cable worked fine when connected straight to my iPhone 3G, but it would only charge via the USB connection when in the dock. The audio and video outputs do not work.
I'm astounded that apple can make a product that does not provide the expected. Surely the dock connector would simply pass through the data it is receiving from the ipod/iphone sitting in the dock.
Apparently not.

Apple iPhone 3G Dock
Maybe worth $5
Written by MB from Baton Rouge
Feb 1, 2009
I was given this, so not like it matters... But, it is pretty much pointless, because it doesn't come with an extra USB cable. The whole purpose of this should be to provide an extra connection to your computer, but instead to have to run around with the cable that came with the iPhone from the outlet to the computer. Cmon Apple, these are exhorbently overpriced to begin with. Give us something useful instead of nickle and diming us. I wish Blackberry was as good as iPhone so I didn't have to get overcharged so much.

What a rip-off...
Written by BL from Metairie
Sep 16, 2008
Yes it is cheap, chintzy and totally unbecoming Apple's supposedly sterling reputation to exclude the necessary connecting cable from this dock. For those apologists who say we shouldn't complain because docks NEVER came with cables, that's simply not true -- the iPhone used to come with BOTH, and no other company would ever dare to offer a dock without a cable. In effect, the Apple product is cheaper and less useful than a Chinese knock-off.
And nowhere on the cute little box is the notation that a cable is needed. So those who simply throw it into their basket because they needed an extra hookup don't discover thev've been deluded until they reach their home or office.60 of 83 people found this useful

Ridiculous price for basically a brick that does nothing without the cable. I bought two, one for home and one for office. I have to carry the cable back and forth or buy another one.

NO CABLE INCLUDED
Written by MG from Boulder
Aug 24, 2008
If you still want to be able to use your original cable when you're on the go (and don't want to have to keep plugging and unplugging it from this dock), then the real cost of a iPhone 3G dock is $49. ($30 for this 'stand' and $19 for a USB cable). It NEEDS to be noted on the box that no cable is included because I'm sure that many people made the same mistake I did: thinking that for the already significant price of $30, the dock would come with everything you need. I love my iPhone, but I don't love Apple cheaping out on stuff like this.

Doesn't work with my 3G iPhone.
Written by BH from philadelphia

I got the dock, plugged my 3G iPhone into it and it said something to the effect of "This accessory is not made for the iPhone, would you like to turn on Airplane mode?"
No, I don't want to turn on Airplane mode. Is there a "Work as you're supposed to" mode? I'd like to turn that on.70 of 132 people found this useful
