  • Apple iPhone 3G Dock

No AV out from this dock

    Written by GB from CAMBRIDGE

    Jul 31, 2008

Warning - I bought one of these and a new Apple Composite AV cable to dock and connect my iPhone to an in-car entertainment system for audio and video output. The cable on its own works great but the dock BLOCKS both the video and audio outputs from the 30-pin connector on the back so nothing works.

On the Apple website it does say that video output is not supported from this dock, but mentions nothing about blocking the audio from the 30-pin connector too! And neither the store staff nor the packaging told me any of this anyway.

I have no clue why Apple would not just pass through the 30-pin connection from the phone to the back of the dock, but they don't. Apparently the Universal Dock does allow AV through, but then it does block the microphone and speaker on the bottom of the iPhone so it's useless for speakerphone calls - and it will cost me another £10 for another power adapter I don't need (got one with the phone and one with the AV cable so far).

So that's £50 spent on two accessories which don't work together but are both 'compatible' with iPhone 3G, and fail to do the job a £2.99 cable from Maplin would do if Apple hadn't encyrption-protected the AV output on the iPhone.

Not great, and I speak as a long-term Apple fan.

Sleek, Gorgeous but should have been included with the phone.

    Written by JC from Liverpool

    Jul 31, 2008

The new iPhone 3G Dock is Lovely.

Just bought mine in the fantastic new Liverpool Apple store!

With the iPhone docked, it has a curved edge around the back so your iPhone is not covered by the dock at front and almost looks like an optical illusion that its standing on top of the dock of its own free will.

SO useful as a bedside dock for alarm clock and general use reasons.

It looks awsome if using the new app 'remote' with iTunes and just standing there, in its dock showing the itunes your controlling. Very posh!

BUT it SHOULD have been included in the box!! It was SUCH a final touch for the original iPhone, Like a glass case for your trophy to go in...

Such a shame, but for £19, essential product to keep the desk and room tidy and it gives your iPhone a proper home. Love it!

    Doesn't keep iPhone stable

    Written by KR from Berwick

Would be a nice accessory on my desk except that the iPhone moves about in the Dock setting off iTunes and iPhoto sync repeatably until iTunes displays an error message.

    Just Works!

Written by LH from LAND O LAKES

    Jul 30, 2008

This dock works fine-It is weighted properly and I don't think there is a problem with the Iphone tipping over unless you take a swipe at it! The phone fits snugly enough and does what it is supposed to do......charge......only down side I see is "No cable included".....wonder what marketing genius decided to trade a cable for "bad PR"?

    Very Nice

This is a nice dock to have. The iPhone fits perfectly, and it helps keeps scratches off your phone. But for the price I wish they would include an USB cord, and a power adapter.

The iPhone 3G Dock comes with a USB power adapter

    Written by DA from Phoenix

    Jul 29, 2008

Apple provides a USB power adapter for the iPhone 3G. This 3G Dock is an extra. Get over it people. The 3G Dock is a luxury, so why should a luxury item be given away for free? Besides, it is redesigned to better fit the shape of the 3G and provide for better sound. Maybe the people complaining should just not own a cell phone. With all the quarters they are saving, they can just go find a pay phone.

THE BOTTOM LINE... If you need a charger for work and can afford the price, the 3G Dock rocks and will look GREAT on your desk or cubicle.

    Unreliable dock connection

    Written by JS from BRISTOL

    Jul 29, 2008

I used my iPhone 3G for a couple of days before the dock arrived, and I had no problems at all. Since using the dock, I've had kernel panics, and on at least 2 occasions iTunes has warned me that the iPhone device was removed whilst syncing. It seems the dock doesn't always make a good connection to the iPhone, it doesn't lock into position. It's always bad to remove a mounted device during data transfer, and in effect that is what the dock is doing with it's unreliable connection. I am very concerned about data corruption.

I think the dock could be designed better - to make a locked connection for better reliability, and a release button to avoid problems with the dock lifting up from the desk when trying to remove the iPhone.

On the plus side, I can understand Apple not including the dock with the 3G - it's a fair way to keep the cost of the iPhone so low, many people may not need a dock, especially if they use one of the many cases that are available. I made a choice not to add to the bulk of my iPhone by using a case, and therefore benefit from the convenience of simply placing the iPhone into a dock, rather than hunting for the cable that may have been burried or slipped off the back of the desk.

Good Product, But Should Have Been Included in the Box!!

Written by RA from San Clemente

    Jul 27, 2008

This is great to have for any iPhone 3G owner, but Apple should have supplied one in the box the iPhone 3G. Really disappointed in them for this. With the V1 iPhone you got an extra wall adapter, USB cable, and the dock at this same price. Now they're making you buy an extra adapter and cable seperate. All products are overpriced, if you're looking to save money, shop around. Apple's really ripping people off this time around.

I had to have it! I couldnt stand having my iPhone just on the top of my drawer as if it were just another crumby phone, so I had to buy the dock and I have to say I love it! I know theres not much you can do with it but my phone looks BEAUTIFUL on it (not as if it didnt look beautiful without it!)! :)

    More Angle

Written by JO from Chino Hills

    Jul 24, 2008

I like the dock but one modification would make it even better. I would like to see more of angle to the phone when it is in the dock so I can work with it better at my desk without taking it out of the dock. I had a palm device which has the perfect dock angle. I would never change back but it would be nice to tilt the dock back about 30 degrees.

    Greed at its finest

Written by RK from San Diego

    Jul 24, 2008

What a worthless piece of plastic this is. It doesn't come with the cable to hook it to your computer, so you have to spend another $19 for the cable. Oh sure, I can use the one that came with my iphone, but then I won't have an extra one at home. This is just outright greed, a cable costs 50 cents to make and they could have included it. I'm loosing all my respect for Apple.

    Tight Fit

    Written by AR from IPSWICH

    Jul 23, 2008

As you would expect a well designed piece of kit which looks great on the desk. Only downside i have found is that you have to take any case you may have on it off. I have the Belkin Formed silicone one which is one of the thinnest but still have to take it off as its so snugly designed.
Not really a issue as the case is easily removed.

    It's okay...

    Written by AW from Frisco

    Jul 23, 2008

For JUST the dock, it's perfect. It charges the phone, which is all it's advertised to do. I was really excited to open up the original iPhone box and get a dock too. And ever since I heard that my original iPhone dock didn't work with the new one, I've been very upset. It's stupid that they charge $30 just for the dock that they force you to buy if you like docks by (probably) deliberately designing to phone NOT to fit the old one.

No Plug, No Cable, No Firewire Charging, but Pretty.

Written by JB from Saint Charles

    Jul 23, 2008

I bought one of these because it wouldn't fit in the original iPhone's dock. I travel a lot, and keep the iPhone's cable & plug in my suitcase, so I like to have a dock as a charger while at home. Things to keep in mind if considering buying this...

    1) It does NOT come with a cable or plug, so you will need to purchase those separately.

    2) I had many previous iPod models, and have been using the Firewire cable from those to run from the wall plug to the dock. (Power only, not using it to sync.) This worked great for iPhone, ver.1. iPhone 3G will NOT charge from a firewire cable!

    3) Does not support the Apple Remote like the Universal Dock does, so if you connect the line-out port to the dock, you cannot use a remote.

So just a word of caution, if you use the included plug for travel and would like a separate desk/home charger you will need to purchase a separate USB iPhone cable and USB power plug. This dock does not come with them, nor does it support previous iPod/dock firewire power.

Wish It Came with iPhone, But There's a "Solution"

    Written by JM from NEWHALL

    Jul 23, 2008

I had become very accostumed to using the dock with my first iPhone, and was surprised to not find one with the 3G. Since I also have an Apple bluetooth, I have the dual dock also. When I sold my original iPhone I also gave the original dock, but still have the dual dock. So what would I do with this precious (but now obsolete) device? I shaved the inside edges of the dual dock to accomodate my iPhone 3G! (cheapskate that I am). It works fine and I have one of the first iPhone 3G dual docks. You can do the same with your regular iPhone dock if you dare (and want to save $30).

    Expensive

    Written by EB from Kildare

    Jul 22, 2008

It costs a lot of money for a plastic pad that only holds the iPhone in a vertical position ... The Universal Dock for the iPod 5G could handle the Apple remote and had an S-video-out port, which were great, but this one only got the dock connector and the line-out ports, which are already available on the iPhone itself.

It's great, good-looking, make the iPhone really stand (even better than the universal dock for iPods), fully fonctional and everything, but it's a big 30$ for the 'convenience'... which I had to pay 40$ in Canada, which starts to be very expensive for a plastic dock.

    CANT LIVE WITHOUT A DOCK!

    Written by BF from TEMPLE

    Jul 22, 2008

Was surprised when I bought my new iPhone 3G and it didn't come with a dock. I guess that is how we could buy the new phone for $200 less than the first one. So it is only $29.00 and it works perfectly. Sits tightly and looks good on my desk. I have to have one for home and office so even at $60 for both still feel it is worth it. I don't ever use a case as it rides in my purse all the time .. just use a screen protector - ClearTouch Crystal by BoxWave is the best in my opinion.

Works great, until you buy a case

    Written by RH from Atsubetsu-ku

    Jul 19, 2008

In a strange oversight that I can't really explain, Apple engineers seem to have created a dock that can't be used by a large number of owners without considerable inconvenience. Since a lot of people are likely to buy a case for their phone, it's worth pointing out, that in the majority of cases you're either going to need to remove your phone from its case every time you want to dock it, or buy the more expensive universal dock which can hold a phone inside its case (albeit only when you remove the small plastic adapter).

For those with slide-in cases, this might be fine, but if you buy something like a silicon rubber jacket (which a lot of people use for its anti-shock potential), it's basically not worth the hassle (or the wear and tear) to keep removing it and putting it back on.
