    Great Product! A must have.

this is a great product if you use it properly. Because it is a lithium polymer battery it needs to be charged fully then drain fully and charged fully etc... to keep it healthy. I get about 4 - 4.5 hours out of this if I i drain it and then charge it (like above). when i first used it like normal i only got about two hours until i realized that you had to do this. This is a great product and if you use it in this way you can even achieve as much as five hours! This is a great product and i would highly recommend it.

note: if you use this technique from the start, the battery heath can increase from what it was when you first get it.

I love seeing 5-star reviews for this thing. Here is the truth: the MacBook battery is big, heavy, and will only get you an additional 2-2.5 hours of battery life under normal usage. Yeah, you need one. No, it is not great.

    Great

I got this battery because I was going to be going on a 10 hour plane ride. It was very, very nice to be able to keep my computer for almost the whole trip. I have read a lot of people saying that it last for 3 or 4 hours, but here is a tip, turn down the brightness level on the screen to as low as it can go (I can get by on a notch of 1 when there is a light on in the room). When on the lowest level, the battery lasts for around 5 hours, sometimes a little less, sometimes a little more. I would recommend this for someone who uses their MacBook for long periods of time.

    equally unhappy

my macbook is just over a year old. i calibrated it regularly as this is my first laptop and i am very precious about it. it has now decided there is no battery in there and has gone completely dead. not reduced capacity, but refuses to see that there is one present. £100 pounds for a new battery to replace one i didn't break is completely unfair and unreasonable. it is a hardware fault not bad maintenance that caused it.

i'm a student and will not be able to replace this for some time. very unimpressed.

Battery failed 18 months old - not up to Apple standards

    Written by AP from SWANSEA

I don't think I should be replacing this battery at only 18 months old for £99 - this isn't good quality/value but the Apple helpline says it is within their acceptable standards. Disappointed. I'm usually a great Apple fan.

    Should last longer....much longer

My wife and I both have MacBooks. Her Battery just died after 16 months of use. I've read that in order to keep them up they need to be fully drained and fully charged each and every time. Sorry, but that's not 'real life'. You buy a notebook to be portable, not to stay plugged into a wall all day. (I have a desktop for that)

My work computer is standard issue Dell laptop and I abuse the heck out it with no battery problems after 4 years (on planes, in meetings etc.).

I expected more from Apple. 16 months is unacceptable performance in my mind.

Like others, the battery in my wife's MacBook went, system profiler said that it was unrecognized. Spoke to the nice people at Apple and although the MacBook was out of warranty by over a year they sent a replacement battery for free. Nice service from Apple!

    Ok until it dies

    Written by GK from Gainesville

Mine was fine until about one month after the year's warranty when it suddenly went dead without warning. In my opinion, this is defective! I never had this problem with my previous lap top. Before that its performance was fine but long performance was not my main requirement, portability was. My son bought a new black MacBook and his battery died in less than 6 months. What is Apple doing to fix this problem? It is fine to replace the battery free of charge the first year but what about someone like me whose battery fails at 13 months or someone whose battery fails for the second time at 14 months. Are you listening, Apple? You are usually very good at responding to user complaints.

    13 Month Problem

    Written by KM

    May 15, 2008

at 13 months the battery died completely. this is not a case of the battery holding less of a charge. one day i picked it up and it said there is no battery installed. this is extremely frustrating.

judging by the other reviews, this is a very common problem. for apple to continue to produce and sell such faulty products, i must start to question the companies integrity.

I've had my Macbook for about a year & a half, and I've taken care to calibrate the battery like you're supposed to. However, for the past 3-4 months, I can't take my laptop anywhere without the power supply, because the battery lasts for (if I'm lucky) 20 minutes. My warranty is up, so now I have to spend $130 on a new battery. Two of my friends have had this same problem, as well.
I'm usually a huge fan of Apple products, but this is ridiculous.

I love my Apple MacBook but I am quite disappointed that after only ten months my battery has died. The battery indicator shows that it is fully charged; however, I can no longer run the computer on battery power. Very weird. Hopefully the Apple Store will be able to help solve this issue.

I got my Macbook 13'' in november 2006, about 5 months later the battery stopped working completely. It is now recognized on the toolbar as a giant x and no matter what i try it still won't charge. I've checked the mac help/troubleshooting but nothing works. Now I'm stuck with a all the time plugged-in laptop, (sort of defeats the purpose of a laptop) and always end up moving too fast and the cable comes out and the computer shuts down. I also cannot believe the price of a new battery! I love mac but if I'm going to be spending 129$ every 4-5 months to replace the battery might as well get a Dell !

    Batter dead after 5 months

    Written by LL from Brick

    Nov 17, 2007

13" MacBook battery dead after 5 months. OK this is crazy. And its not covered under the 3 yr AppleCare I purchased. Even after following Apples instructions to let the battery drain fully and recharge fully. Again this is crazy who does this in the real world. I am very dissapointed in Apple. I now have to pay $130 for a new battery, which might not last again. Come on Apple get on it. This is a big problem. Fix it.

After about 11 months of use, my battery will not work anymore. I payed $1399 for a Macbook, and my battery won't even function.I sent it in through AppleCare, and their exact words were,
"Our analysis has determined that although your battery no longer has the capacity to function at a level necessary for the optimum operation of your unit, it is not defective."
de·fec·tive: imperfect in form or function : faulty

Apple always comes up short n batteries

Written by MS from Palm springs

    Sep 22, 2009

Ive been a loyal Apple enthusiast since 1984. Owned the first Mac when it was only available to universities. Their form factors and designs are sexy brilliant and interfaces are intuitive.

Power, however, has always come up short, Whether it be the ipod, the iphone, and now the MacBook. I ve had mine for just about two years and the battery flat out failed -- and Im a very casual user, who often times takes the battery out to spare battery life while using AC power.

My brother's family has 3 macs -- all 3 batteries failed just after the first year.

Not sure why Im writing a review. Its not like you have a choice in power sources. Perhaps Apple is reading these posts and will realize they kep having practices that alienate their loyal customer base.

    Heads Up

    Written by DL from Daleville

    Nov 12, 2008

I saw that many of you wrote a review on how you're "not surprised" about the failure in your battery life. Remember, your notebook is a PORTABLE, it is NOT a laptop. These computers are made to be portable with the adapting charger. If you let the life in your battery run out, then your battery will indeed not charge to it's fullest, nor will you get the maximum amount of life from the battery power source. You can check to see how many times you've ran your battery down by going to "about this mac" on the apple icon located in the top left corner of your screen. Click "more info" and scroll to where you see "power" on the left. Also, download the free software "battery update" if you see that your computer isn't communicating to the battery like it should be. You can tell if you're updated on your battery by click HD/system/library/system config/batteryupdater/apple+i (info). If you're a macbook you need battery updater 1.2. If you're an os x, you'll need 1.3

    MacBook 13" White battery issues

Written by TG from Round Lake

    Oct 19, 2009

I've had a white 13" MacBook for about 3.5 years and all of a sudden the battery doesn't last for 5 minutes. Apple prides itself with good solid products. I like the Mac but they surely need to fix this battery issue. Its tough having to shell out $130 for a new battery every 3 years. My 5 year old Sony laptop still gives me 3 hours of battery time!!!
    C'mon Apple!

    BATTERY HORRIBLE-

    Written by AG from oceanside

In less than year battery stopped working unless plugged in. If I wanted to be plugged in all the time I would have bought a desktop. I thought APPLE was supposed to be superior to PC, but in regards to this battery I am VERY disappointed. It is so expensive to replace this battery for less than 1 year of use! THUMBS DOWN!

    Great Battery

Written by DF from San Diego

    Jul 21, 2007

If you just cycle it properly you are fine. I have 138 cycles on mine and it is still at 100% battery health and lasts for hours (4ish depending on what im doing). I am very happy with this battery. If you keep your computer plugged in all the time the battery is going to die fast. All i do is charge it overnight, and then run it til its dead. I never plug it back into the wall if it has over 20 min of battery life left. Just cycle it... high to low... if you do this, it will last you a long time. I couldnt be happier

Apparently People Don't Know How to Use a Lithium Ion Battery.

    Written by JT from Denver

    Jan 29, 2009

Just like most cellphone batteries, this is a lithium ion battery, something that — if you've ever taken chemistry you would know — is one of the most powerful chemical combinations for a battery.

However, like all batteries it has a power input capacity that when over filled will either melt the battery, or cause it to die over time. That is the same case with this one, so in order to maintain its life and keep it healthy, you have to use all that power you've been flowing into it.

So if your battery is becoming useless very quickly, it's because you aren't using it for a battery, you're using it as a liaison between charger and laptop, so buy a desktop if you want something stationary.

Laptops were designed to be mobile. So use them that way.
