A solid drive (unless you get a D.O.A.)

    • Written by from Vantaa

I ordered two of these. The first one worked like a charm: it's silent, the build quality is great and everything you need (even the Thunderbolt cable) is in the box. But the other one... It was a LOT noisier than the first, the casing became extremely hot during normal operation, and a constant clicking sound was emanating from the drive's read/write head, even when there were no file transfers going on. This is never a good sign, so I ordered a replacement, which is working just fine.

My 2 cents: this is an excellent and solid drive, unless you're out of luck and get a lemon. LaCie might have problems with quality control problem, but to be fair, so do most consumer-grade drive manufacturers nowadays.

I'd also like to commend Apple for a very fast replacement service: I ordered the two disks on Friday, got them (and filed the complaint) on Monday, and the replacement arrived today (Thursday). Well done.

Works as expected but few minor annoyances

    • Written by

I have no issues with the functionality of the drive. Works fine and sleeps and wakes with the Mac and using Home Sharing with other Macs and iOS devices on the network.

Although the drive is fan less, I find it louder than some the other external drives I have from other manufacturers.
Odd thing is if I very slightly squeeze the case, noise levels drops a little.

The other issue is the light on the front, which seems to be on all the LaCie products I have.
Why so big and why so bright with no option to turn off.
If your using your Mac and sharing your media, nothing more annoying that at night when your in bed and someone in family using home sharing and the drive starts up and that light is blaring. We shouldn't have to tape over the light or hide the drive.

    High quality hard drive

    • Written by from Vancouver

I am looking for a performance hard drive for my primary drive and can last for many years. This one is definitely looked hight quality and fast. It's easy to setup and will not generate too much heat. Performance is better than my internal hard drive in my Mac. The only reason I am giving only 4 stars is the noise, read/write is quiet but I mean the mechanical noise in general. There is a difference with the drive turned on or off particularly at night, the noise is more noticeable. Comparing to my cheaper LaCie Porsche Design hard drive (super quiet), this D2 drive is a lot noisier although it's not too annoying.

    Does its job

Under Snow Leopard, Lion and Mt Lion this thunderbolt device sleeps with the system . Awakens with the system and copy speeds range between 130 megs/sec to 160.

Compared to the Little Big Disk it takes a few seconds to wind up after awake but no big deal. Does not slow the shutdown time of the system.

Only drawback is the one thunderbolt port, so must place at the end of the daisy chain.
