iTunes 10 is not compatible with 10.4.11 tiger. There fore, you cannot sync songs to our iPhone. It will also do the same with iPad and iPhone. To download iTunes 10, you have to upgrade to Mac OS X leopard (10.5) or snow leopard (10.6). Upgrading to leopard will work to download iTunes 10.

You just need the US$29 Snow Leopard installation DVD. The last I looked, the Apple Store was selling 10.6.3. After you install, go to the Apple Menu and select "Software Update" to bring Snow Leopard up to latest version (10.6.5).
Snow Leopard requires 1) Intel based Mac, 2) 1 GB RAM, 3) 5 GB hard drive space.
You can install on a freshly formatted partition and import your OS settings from your 10.5.8 partition. This way, you can start up from either partition. Most useful if you are not certain all your applications and drivers will work in Snow Leopard.
I upgraded from OS 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard. A number of my drivers did not work initially (I had to find updated versions), so it was nice to be able to "jump back" to Tiger while I figured out how to get everything to work in Snow Leopard.- Answered by Ewald W from Vancouver

Does apple recommend running anti-virus software with snow leopard?
- Asked by John W from Menlo Park

Best Answer
It is always wise to have protection. Even with Mac's being a low target of viruses. Typically you can pick up a computer virus although, it might not affect your Mac you can pass it on to your Windows Friends/Co-workers. Rather you use Snow Leopard or any other version of Mac OS you should consider an antivirus software. However, I would not rush out in panic.

Should I buy antivirus for my macbook?

Macs generally are safe from viruses, spyware, adware, and other types of malware designed for Windows PCs. While anti-virus applications can add an extra layer of security to your system, some common sense when browsing the web and opening email attachments is a far safer and cost-effective method.
However, it is highly recommended that you make regular backups, especially for a portable computer. Luckily, Time Machine, built right into Mac OS X, will automate the backup process for you. All you need is an external hard drive and Time Machine will take care of the rest.
Finally, if you are planning on installing Windows on your Mac via Boot Camp, then by all means it is a good idea to get anti-virus protection for the Windows side, since your Mac essentially behaves as a Windows PC would when booted into Windows.- Answered by Mike B from Roswell

Hi I have a Mac G5 OS X 10.3.9, i would like to update it to the newest version possible. Is Snow Leopard good for me, if not, what should i do?
processor: Dual 1.8 GHz Power PC Mac G5
OS X 10.3.9
Memory: 1 GB DDR SDRAM- Asked by Dahlia E from New York

Snow Leopard is Intel-only, and your G5 is powered by a non-Intel processor. If you'd like to upgrade your system, Leopard is a very good choice and does work on PowerPC processor Macs. I believe you can still purchase Leopard through various stores that sell Apple products and software. It would certainly be worth it!
Otherwise, you can look at refurbished or new replacement machines that are powered by an Intel Processor. I highly recommend getting a machine that features a Core 2 Duo processor, and would look at the graphics processor vs. the Snow Leopard tech requirements, so that you can maximize the features that 10.6 offers.

I have mac OSx 10.5.8 can I buy any upgrades I would like to run lion. Can someone tell me what I need to do?
- Asked by Nancy H from Marble Rock
- Nov 30, 2011

Best Answer
First, in order to run Lion, make sure your Mac has an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor. You also need at least 2GB of memory and 7GB of Hard Drive space. You also need to first upgrade to Snow Leopard (OS10.6.6 or later) in order to download and install Lion (buy Snow Leopard DVD ($29), install and do Software Updates from the Apple Menu until you reach OS10.6.8).
Once you are running OS 10.6.8, then go to the online Apple Store and purchase and download Lion, and install.
Be prepared to update third party software once you install Lion. Lion discontinues "Rosetta" support for applications that are not native to Intel processors, so older applications (such as Microsoft Office 2004) will not run under Lion.- Answered by Ewald W from Vancouve

Mac OS X 10.4.11 Upgrading?!
Hi all
My macbook works from a 2.16 GHz Inter Core 2 Duo processor, and I'd like to upgrade to a newer OS as lots of updates don't seem to work as the the system is really old!!
I've read I should buy the full disc set to upgrade to Snow Leopard but I can't seem to find that anywhere? Also, if I upgrade to Snow Leopard can I then upgrade straightaway to Lion via App store?
Your advice is greatly appreciated.

My MacBook has the same processor as yours running OS X 10.4.11 Tiger. I bought the Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard from the Apple Online Store for $29. They sent me the SL installation disc containing the new version 10.6.3.
Following the onscreen instructions, I chose the standard upgrade installation option, and let Apple do its thing, which took about an hour. Then it announced that the installation was successful and the computer needed to be restarted.
After it restarted, an information box appeared which said that software updates were available and did I want to do that now. I was eager to see the new OS working, so I cancelled the software updating for later.
I was dismayed to find websites slow to load, and the computer generally acting sluggish, so I decided to let Apple do the software updates. I clicked the go-ahead and waited for about 45 minutes for the updating to finish. After that, the computer worked fine, zippier, and in addition, the OS had been updated to 10.6.8 and Safari 4 updated to Safari 5.1.5.- Answered by Eugene L from Mill Valley

My Imac is Mac OSX Version 10.5.8 Would I benefit by upgrading to Snow Leopard, or have I already got it.
My system does not give the software a "Leopard" name ? just OSX 10.5.8 ?
Also, as an old Windows user, I would like to install Microsoft Word. How cheaply can I achieve this - I presume it's not included with the Snow Leopard upgrade that I am considering ?
Please advise.- Asked by Christopher W

CW,
If your iMac has 10.5.8, then you have Mac OS X Leopard. The .8 in 10.5.8 means there have been 8 updates applied to the base 10.5.0 version. Mac OS X Snow Leopard is version 10.6 which you do not currently own, but can be purchased for $29 from any Apple Store.
As far as your question of benefits to upgrading, yes there are some new features and fixes in Mac OS X Snow Leopard† that many will find beneficial. You do need to be sure your iMac meets the system requirements, which mainly is that it contains an Intel processor.
For your final question on Word, you have some options. Microsoft has released Microsoft Office for OS X, which can be purchased in an Apple Store. Also you can use OS X's Boot Camp feature if you would like to run Word natively in Windows. Finally, you can look into virtualization software. Some examples of these are VMWare Fusion, and Parallels.
†Refinements in Mac OS X Snow Leopard are listed on Apple's Mac OS X Snow Leopard "What's New?"- Answered by Matthew Y from Iowa City

Is Mac OS X Version 10.6.8 the same as Snow Leopard 10.6
- Asked by Keith B from Bonner Springs

Best Answer
Yes. All OS versions starting with "10.6." are Snow Leopard.
When you install Snow Leopard, you will probably be installing an older version such as 10.6.3. Then need to perform Software Updates (under the Apple menu) to update Snow Leopard to the latest version (currently 10.6.8).- Answered by Ewald W from Vancouve

No, you can only go as far as Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. Unsure if iTunes (probably 11) will work on Leopard in the fall, so you should think about getting a new mac.

I will answer your questions in reverse of the order they are presented. Yes you need Snow leopard to download the App Store. If you do not have it on your Mac already, you must purchase it. I don't know the cost in pounds sterling, its $29.00 US. Once you have the new OS installed, update it, and you should see the APP store when you click the Apple icon.
