can you use the new ipad as a phone? I currently have an iphone 4 but want to know if I could use the Ipad 3 to replace my phone and laptop.

You could use it to make calls to any phone using third party apps like Skype or Vonage, but if you want it to ring like a phone, you're going to have to either keep those apps running and keep the iPad plugged in, which may be inconvenient. You'd also probably want the 4g iPad, so that you could use those apps wherever you go. If you have only a WiFi version, you'd only be able to call while on your home Wifi or at a WiFi hotspot.
If you're like me and you don't call people very often and you would rather have incoming calls go to voice mail, those services will work just fine. But if you're a big caller and want to receive calls immediately, it's just not going to replace a phone.
FaceTime works great as a video calling service, and unlike other apps it rings reliably just like a phone even when you have your iPad in sleep mode. The catch: you'll be only able to call other Apple users (Iphone, iPad, Mac) and only while using a WiFi network.- Answered by Mark S from Portland

I don't want cellular contract. what do I need to get to get on the internet?
I will get a wireless i pad. I don't want a monthly charge from a carrier. What do I need to buy if I am not near a wifi area to make connnection.

If you have Wifi only, you need Wifi access to connect. If you have a data connected smartphone and acquire the tethering service, you can generate a wifi hotspot via your phone's data connection.

Would an iPad Mini work well as a cell phone as well as having standard other features.
I currently use Blackberry (for phone, text, browser, emails etc). I don't make or receive a lot of phone calls, but I don't want to carry both an iPad mini and a cell phone. Is there a Canadian carrier which offers reasonable rates for this combo and is the iPad mini suitable for this.

Yes, the iPad automatically picks up your air or e-printer; however, when I used the 3G and 4G I could not print at all, nor could my service provider help out with this problem. I switched to WiFi and I can print without any problems.

I am a realtor, is an iPad better than a laptop?

I am a Realtor in the Orlando area. My wonderful husband got me an ipad II thinking it would help me run my business. Here are the issues I run into:
1. my mls does not run on the ipad (yet they are saying they will have an app later in the year) Alternate apps ie Kurio do not have ipad app only iphone app and it does not show - showing instructions....duuh I need showing instructions.
2. Forms online gold or transaction desk does not run on it.
3. I do REOs and need to use the Equator platform for those - I can open it but can not upload documents... ie when you need to "browse" to upload a document - it wont do it.
4. Whenever I go to a website that requires uploading a document or picture where you have to "browse" I can not do it. Ie: last night I was signing up for the NAR Lowes program I could not upload my picture and logo. what apps enable making a phone call from an iPad Mini w 3g, and what charges are associated with making voice calls?
I'm wondering whether I could get away with not having an iPhone (which I don't like using for much besides making voice calls, since the screen is so small) and just use an iPad mini for calls and more.
But I don't want to do this if using it for voice calls is exorbitantly expensive.

Answer
It's totally up to you, if you want a good camera, then you want to go for the iPhone 5. If you don't mind the clarity of the picture you'll see then the iPhone 4S would be suitable.
But the extra 0.5" screen is also a good extra.
