Can the firewire 400 and 800 ports be used to daisy chain other 400 or 800 devices?

For instance, I have a powerbook with a FW400 port. I have another device I need plugged in that is only FW400. Can I plug the LaCie Hard drive into my FW 400 port, and then plug my other 400 device into the LaCie's 800 port using a 400 to 800 adapter? I don't mind that all the devices will only be running at 400 speeds. My concern is whether it will work seamlessly or not. Thanks!

As an editor with many hardrives often open at once I would suggest NOT to daisy chain between 400 and 800 as this has caused me many issues in the past with final cut. Daisy chaining between 400 iis fine or daisy chaining between 800 is fine but you should never mix the 400 and 800 together.

  • Daisy chaining multiple Firewire 400 & 800 drives forces the firewire bus to operate at the speed of the lowest device on the bus. The upshot, everything will work at FW400 speed and you will not benefit from the FW800 bandwidth.

  • Unfortunately nor for this specific product. Although the "non-mobile" drives from LaCie are daisy chain compatible.
