Not sure why this has so many wrong answers. The outside of the cover is a soft, unsueded leather when it is covering the front of the iPad. The part that is against the glass screen is microfiber. The leather softness has a disadvantage in that is very porous and everything soaks into it including oils from your hands. My red one looks kind of grubby now and am considering shoe polish to disguise it. Cleaning the leather with a soft damp cloth as advised elsewhere does not work. It also starts removing the dye. If I were doing it over again I would use a leather sealer on it brand new and reapply from time to time.

The leather is hard, smooth; not suede. the inside of the cover is micorfiber, which has a suede appearance. According to Apple info, the microfiber helps to keep the screen clean.

Suede like on the interior (the surface that buffs the screen) and smooth, supple leather on the outside.
