Is this a new HDMI AV Adapter ?
Previously I have also purchased a HDMI AV Adapter from Apple. Is there any difference ?

Using one HDMI adapter that I think is the old version, I get the message ("This accessory is not supported") on a Verizon gen 3 iPad, but not an AT&T gen 3 iPad.
Using a newer HDMI adapter (on this one you have to pinch it to unlock), I don't get the message on either iPad.
Both iPads are updated to 5.1.1.- Answered by Michael P from Palo Alto

I bought the HDMI AV Adapter 2 weeks before the release of iPad 3. The attachment does indicate it is not compatible, but it works just fine.
My question for "Apple" is what is up with this simple adapter showing that message when it works?- Answered by Kendric R from Houston

Yes. It is updated to support the new iPad. It also includes a lockin mechanism now.

Officially yes, although there doesn't seam to be any difference.
