Is there a shortcut to the dashboard?
as in the side buttons on the mouse. i found it very annoying that i did not have a way to do it on my track pad on my laptop.

Just make on of the active corners in Expose a shortcut to dashboard.

The only way you can do this is to use 3rd party software. I use BetterTouchTool to setup a gesture for Dashboard, among many other custom gestures. The possibilities are virtually endless with BTT.

not that i have found but there are shortcuts to expose and you can switch applications.

Yes, just swipe four fingers up the trackpad instead of down (for Exposé). The open applications slide to the edges and then a further four-finger swipe brings them back.
