Does the av Cable allow you play games or at least watch videos with iphone 3gs firmware 3.1.2

I bought a cheap cable on ebay and it works on my sons itouch 3rd gen firmware 2.something not realy sure. but wont work on iphone. i went ahead and ordered an original iphone av cable and hope it works with the componetnt cable. Really mostly intrested in watching videos. But the original question is can you play games on a tv as well as watch videos with an original apple av cable?
