Apple Recommends For

Classic Scandinavian designed speaker with full 360-degree stereo sound.

The Libratone Live AirPlay Speaker is easy to use - simply select the music you want to listen to on your iPod, iPhone, iPad or Mac, press play and listen. The Libratone Live begins to play your music as soon as your iPod, iPhone, iPad or Mac is within range and stops playing when you are outside it.

Apple AirPlay technology streams high-quality audio wirelessly from your iPod touch, iPhone or iPad to your Libratone Live.

Libratone Live plays music like an acoustic instrument, dispersing sound waves in all directions and reflecting them off the walls giving a 360 degree FullRoom sound experience. Whether you're dancing, working or playing, and no matter how far you are from the speaker, the audio experience will stay the same.

The Libratone Live app (available from the App Store) allows you to enhance and customise your FullRoom musical experience. The app lets you input information about the placement of your Libratone Live and it then automatically adjusts the sound to fit your room. The app also allows you to use your iPod touch, iPhone or iPad to control the volume thus eliminating the need for an extra remote.

    Not half bad

    • Written by from LONDON

Sound: not bad for a relatively small powered speaker. Sounds pretty good on a variety of different music types and seems to maintain quality through out its volume range. Stereo image is a bit narrow - not unexpectedly. Doesn't suffer from the superficially attractive boom and tiz of 'hi-fi' speaker systems. Really requires the Libratone app to get the best out of it - rather than just presets this could do with more advanced settings to allow the user to tweak things a bit more. Overall: if there is any criticism the sound lacks 'involvement' when compared to more high end speaker systems but is loud enough for general purpose listening, even in a large space.

Construction: excellent and is quite heavy, surprisingly it gets warm and the fabric covered mains lead is quite stiff..?! AirPlay seems to work well from iPad and iTunes on various desktop Macs, although what with waking up the Libratone and connecting from an Airplay device it can take a while for playback to start. i.e. it's not really instant on. Currently the iPhone 4s Airplay manages to reliably crash the Libratone!

Looks: funky, furry and not like the usual hidious black boxes - pity you can't buy a spare woolen jumper for it to change it's colour!

Is it worth it? A bit on the pricy side but the convenience of a single box, funky good looks, lack of the usual birds nest of wires and easy portability combined with good although not really breathtaking sound quality make this definitely worth considering.

    Sound ok, airplay issues

    • Written by from Lincoln

After using the Live for a full month I returned it. I very much liked the design of the Live, and the mid range and high end is really quite good even though you must listen to it reflected off walls due to the design. The bass is only so-so for music with any serious bass. Of course classical, Sinatra, etc. sound great. Having tried various positions vis-a-vis the wall as recommended, with accompanying app settings, the idea of stereo separation with this design (as one would suspect) is unsuccessful, although one can get the sense of the room being filled with sound, depending on finding the right location. The software app works well and gives a large variety of choices with which to customize the "sound" of the audio. The real problem is the constant drop outs from AirPlay - not short ones, but often permanent, effectively negating the ability to listen in a relaxed manner to anything. Libratone blames Apple and AirPlay. I don't think that's the whole story. After testing, the Live had many, many more drops (often permanent drops needing various reboots) than my AudioEngine system on the same Airplay network, which dropped as well, but only very occassionally, and never permanently. So all-in-all beautiful design, but performance not good enough for the price. More

A lot better now the firmware was upgraded - previously we were getting a lot of cut outs. Since the firmware upgrade we've had none. More

    Looks and sounds great!

    • Written by from Elk Grove

    PROS
    -Spectacular fit and finish
-Great sound (compared to other AirPlay speaker systems)
    -Easy set up

    CONS
    -Relatively heavy (may limit placement)
-Cannot use special characters for WiFi password. (! are OK)

If you've ever setup a non-Apple wireless router before, then setup will be a breeze. If not, just follow the simple included instructions. Will not work with WiFi passwords which have #,$,% etc. Frustrating that this wasn't mentioned anywhere in the manuals (a quick web search led me to their support page).

After setup, it has performed flawlessly with my computer and various iOS devices. Sounds great, except maybe to serious audiophiles.

Very happy with purchase. Simplified previous setup, which was a pair of speakers connected to an old AirPort Express. Would buy again if I was looking for AirPlay enabled speakers.

    Good sound, bad connectivity.

    • Written by from Grand Junction

The sound quality is very good. The form factor is good and fit my space perfectly. The big downside is the wireless connectivity. I am constantly having to restart the unit to get it to show up. It also slips into some weird sleep mode that makes it invisible on the network. They are charging far too much money for such marginal AirPlay support. I would sure appreciate a firmware update to bring this thing up to the standards that such a high price would imply. More

    Great speaker system

    • Written by from Montchanin

When I first hooked the Libratone Live up using my home wi-fi I also experienced some signal drop out. I now have my iPad configured as a personal hot spot and play my music direct from the iPad. With this configuration the Libratone Live connects quickly every time and sits there and will play for hours without any issues. I really like the sound quality as well as the portability. I bought a Pelican case and took the Libratone Live on vacation. More
