    Meh..

    • Written by from Naperville

I bought this for my macbook pro retina display because it doesn't have a built in dvd player. The cord is really short so if you want to watch a movie on it you have to have your computer sitting stationary somewhere. The biggest problem I had with it was the fact that it is not compatible with Blu-Ray. I have a retina computer that is capable of the resolution of Blu-Ray but the cd drive is not compatible to play the disc.

The only good use I have gotten out of it is that I can play and burn CD's.

    Garbage

    • Written by from Los Angeles

I haven't used it much but as others have experienced, it doesn't work for very long. At least I was able to salvage my disc, II can get it to eject the disc by turning it upside down.

Again, as others have pointed out, for half the price you can get one that works, works well, and lasts.

Clearly, Apple quality died with Steve Jobs.

This drive works great! Not to sure why people are having so much difficulty with this.

    Ejecting is terrible

    • Written by from South Bend

Overall, this DVD drive works. However, the eject button works maybe once every five times. I find myself having to hold it upside down and press to get the DVD to come out. There needs to be some sort of button on the side.

    DO NOT BUY

    • Written by from ASCOT

Will not accept any DVD's, you have to push discs in yourself and there are no buttons - not to mention it's extremely overpriced. You can buy ones that actually work for half the price. Will be returning it.

    Not Region Free

    • Written by from Chalfont

I've only been using this a short time, but am SO disappointed this is not region free. It will only switch between regions 5 times and then permanently stay on the 5th selected region. Totally useless for travelers and other people living, working, or studying abroad. At $80 a pop I would expect a more diverse and compatible product.

Though this is slightly more understandable given Apple's monopolistic tendencies, it's really annoying that this is only compatible with Apple products. Obviously doesn't work with a television or any other kind of laptop.

Lastly, it would be nice to have a longer cord.

    Great product!

    • Written by from Laredo

I bought this drive for late 2012 iMac. I brought it home and connected it to download some CDs I wanted on my iTunes account. No problems here! I was able to eject each CD without any drama or problems. Fast enough for my iMac. Great product.

    Disappointingly unreliable

    • Written by from Largs

Have owned this drive for just over a year, have used it only occasionally and until recently was very happy with it. Stylish like all Apple products and met my needs. However, recently it has stopped taking in disks and looks like a terminal failure. Would have expected better reliability for the price.

    It works

    • Written by from Winona

I was hesitant to buy based on the mediocre/negative reviews, but I figured an Apple product would work better than any other, so I bought it. Plugged the device in, sent it a playlist from iTunes and the disc burned in about three minutes, no problems - exactly as it does on all of my Macs with internal optical drives. My only complaint would be that the USB cable is only long enough to have the drive directly under the iMac.

Perfect DVD Drive for MacBook Pro Users

    • Written by from Pittsburgh

I purchased this drive apprehensively because of all of the bad reviews. But I was not disappointed. I think there are many inaccurate reviews of this drive which have driven down the overall rating for this product. It works exactly as described and I am using it to rip DVDs so I can watch them on an iPad and iPhone. Works perfectly and is faster than I expected. I can rip a DVD movie in about 20-30 minutes depending on the length of the movie. Overall, I would highly recommend this drive.

Perfect addition for the MacBook Pro

    • Written by from Philadelphia

Just got a new MacBook. The only problem was not having a CD drive built in. However the Super Drive solves that problem very well. Currently using to add music to ITunes and it works perfectly. I would definitely recommend this drive for anyone who needs an external drive.

Great product with only one small flaw

It works really well but I think it would benefit a lot from having a detachable USB cable. Other than that, it's great!

    Does what it says

    • Written by from Moses Lake

I bought this product when I bought my new Macbook pro, and so far, it does exactly what it says it will. I haven't used it to burn anything yet, or watch any DVDs, but i had to install Microsoft Office for school, and it did that flawlessly, and very fast. It took longer to Import a CD into iTunes, but it didn't take any longer than expected for that either. It would be nice if it did Blu Ray, but thats the way things are sometimes. Other than that, i don't have any complaints yet.

Not as good as it should be

    • Written by from Honley, Holmfirth

This drive copes well with most demands made of it UNTIL that is you get a recorded CD that is at the maximum end of capacity. Out of a 14 disc box set I wanted to transfer to iTunes (Apple Lossless) it stumbled on 4. The outermost 2 or 3 tracks on each of them slipped and did not transfer correctly despite supposed error correction on import. The solution was to copy the affected tracks to the desktop then drag into iTunes. How come it managed to read the disc ok copying to the desktop but it made errors when copying directly into iTunes? Having lost faith with this drive's ability I replaced it with a blu-ray reader/writer instead - problem sorted.

I had it for a little over a year and no flaws. When i see all these negative reviews people must be doing something wrong. Those complaining about no reject button hello the reject button is on the top far right.

    Faulty Unit

    • Written by from GREEN VALLEY

I bought an Apple USB SuperDrive one week after purchasing a new iMac in order to install new software for my business since the new iMac's do not have a CD/DVD drive. The USB SuperDrive does not work. I insert a disc, it makes a few whirring sounds, then spits out the disk. I have tried it with multiple discs with the same results. It looks as though other users have had the same experience.

    just awful

    • Written by from Auckland

I've had two of these devices and both have been just terrible, fails to read most CD's when i try to rip them to iTunes. The music, usually only on the first track comes out with background distortion, discs are fine and work perfectly on other devices. I assumed it was a faulty unit but no the replacement does the same and now its out of warranty. I've done a bit of googling about and it seems to be a common problem that Apple just ignore. DON"T WASTE YOUR MONEY BUY A THRID PARTY DRIVE!

Easy to use and great design!

    • Written by from Bath

I bought this USB SuperDrive for my 15" retina display macbook pro.

It's so easy to use, just plug into the USB port, and then insert the disk as you would on a imac or an earlier version of the macbook pro. I have used this for DVDs and to rip CDs to itunes. It is also easy to backup music from itunes onto a CD.

The cable is about 30cm. On a flat surface this is plenty to connect the SuperDrive while having the front of it face you, and have it a fair distance away from your mac.

In conclusion it is a great product, easily connectable to your mac, and a sleek design matching the scheme of your mac.

    Eject button

    • Written by from Lake Elmo

Please Apple ... your insistence on making everything so easy to use, is actually maling them harder to use. A simple eject button would cost a nickel and save countless hours of searching for the onscreen eject button that always seem elusive.
