The best investment I made since buying a computer!

    • Written by from Charlotte Hall

I've owned Apple computers since the old Mac Classic days and have gone through many operating systems. Suffice it to say that I've also experienced a number of crashes requiring reformatting my hard drive and reinstalling everything either from a backup or one-by-one. It's always been a horrible experience. A little more than a month ago I upgraded my iMac to Mountain Lion. Short story there is that the install caused a catastrophic loss of data and, again, I was forced to wipe the drive and begin again. I always found excuses not to use Time Machine and not to purchase a Time Capsule, but after my last upgrade disaster, I decided to take the plunge. A week ago Apple issued a product recall on my iMac because the boot drive suffered a manufacturing defect and was likely to fail, so I was faced with another experience of starting from scratch. Today I picked up my iMac and when I booted it at home I used the Mountain Lion recovery partition to access Time Machine, restoring everything to my computer from my Time Capsule. Four hours later, voila! It was as if nothing had happened. I didn't have to reinstall anything, and everything worked perfectly. It was as if nothing ever happened! It was the easiest and best experience I've had with a critical computer problem. I highly recommend the Time Capsule. Buy it. Use it. Don't be without it. I'm using it to back up my Macbook Pro and my iMac. Now I definitely have peace of mind.

    Easy and reasonable fast

    • Written by from Roskilde

Everything works as promised, but it would be nice if Time Capsule could be used as a streaming device like other NAS servers out there with a special app for iPhone .

Saddens me to read the reviews from other disappointed customers. Thought that the hardware issues were history?

Another case where sales talk does not match product

    • Written by from Taringa

Hi bought a 2TB time capsule from Apple store Carindale (Aust) and the guy who sold it to me said it is really easy to set up the time machine AND the wireless router. Couldn't be more difficult. I have spent an hour last night trying to instal it myself and then 2 hours on the phone to Apple, who funny enough could not fix the issue, and then my internet service provider who could partly fix it. I am still faced with an amber flashing light but the router is (currently) working). I'm sick of being told that a product will work in a certain way yet it doesn't. Add my time for working through this to the cost of the product and it becomes pretty expensive.

    Waste of Money

    • Written by from Dorchester

Used in conjunction with my iMac, iPad. This is the second one I have gone through. The fist one never worked properly had made several calls to support and two repairs until it was replaced. Now the new one as lasted just over 18 months and now the disk is failing taking all the back up with it. More trouble than its worth. Save your money and buy an external back up so you can do it your self, and get the cheeper Air port as thats what the Time Capsule turns into. Now all I get to do is pay to have it fixed, yet again, buy a new one (that won't happen) buy something different (already looking onto it) write a review and make a complaint (that I'm sure will go no where, or anyone will care)

Will Work Great Right Up Until.....

    • Written by from Denver

The time capsule is an elegantly designed easy to use device that is poorly engineered. In an attempt to shove 10 lbs of stuff in a 5lb box the device is destined to one day overheat and fail completely. Mine lasted a little over 2 years before having its terminal event. As with most things Apple, you can take it to the local retail store where the Genius will tell you it can't be fixed and offer you a full price replacement. The second time around I opted for an Airport Extreme (less stuff, same case) and am trying the backups on a Western Digital hard drive plugged into the airport via USB. We'll see how that goes! Perhaps someday they will actually design this device properly. Of course, it is pleasant to look at... :(

Worked well until it completely failed

    • Written by from Fort Wayne

This worked well fro three years until it completely failed, leaving me with a worthless brick filled with my now unreachable back-ups. Repair tech identified it as common overheating problem that fried the power supply. Unit was on shelf all by itself w/ 3+ feet clearance all around.

Don't combine two devices into one

    • Written by from Augusta

This is a follow-up of a previous review by me. Still not able to sync with MacBook Pro after initially working for a number of months.

    The major flaw is this:
It is not a good idea to combine two devices into one. In this case, the router works, but for some arcane reason, the hard drive does not sync. So, I am stuck with this very hot device, and I expect the heat will cause the router to fail sooner than it would have otherwise. If the router had failed, then I would have had to ship the entire device for repair and lose the use of the router, or buy a separate router.

Better to keep things simple (Apple, remember?):
Keep the two devices separate. Then, if one device fails, it doesn't involve the 2nd device.

    Good concept - Poor delivery

    • Written by from Bingley

Bought two, lost two - won't get bitten again. Without doubt the worst Apple product I have ever owned. Great concept, poor delivery a real C minus product.
You must be able to get a more reliable solution to backing up that won't let you (and your precious memories) down!

    Very Unsatisfactory

    • Written by from Dun Laoire

Product didn't protect me as advertised. Caused massive slowdown in my Macbook pro, forcing me eventually to reinstall entire system. When I wished to recover my files following reinstall, it usually tells me I'm not authorised to reach them. I also wish to use it as a server for iTunes but everytime I log in to iTunes, it has forgotten that the time capsule is the default disk. All in all a waste of money.

    Hot, Hot, Hot!

    • Written by from Laramie

My Time Capsule runs very hot all the time! I purchased it in Sep of 2012. I have it in a very well ventilated area and there is not a lot of dust but it still is hot all the time. I use it to back up four different Mac computers and access movies from my Apple TV so it is used all the time and the fan has come on several times. From what different community forums have said about the TC's thermal management system the fan only comes on when the temperature is close to the "melt-down" point! And from what it looks like with the fan and vent design all that fan does is swirl the heat around. I'm worried the power supply is going to fail soon and my backups will be lost!

    Apple does it again

    • Written by from Huntington Beach

    Plug and done!

The time capsule is amazingly simple to setup. It seriously is plug and play. All I did was plug it in, give it a name, set it to bridge mode to avoid wireless network issues and now I am up and saving files wirelessly. It is so fast and so simple.

Now, is it possible another hard drive like a seagate could have done it, possibly. My past experience with western digital or seagate hard disks and their software has been iffy at best. The disks do work, but the software never seems to work as simply.

    About me:

I used to be a microsoft developer, certified web-dev, now have shifted away to the apple world. Why apple you may ask? Sure microsoft provides all the bells and whistles, non-proprietary soft are that works with any hardware, but do we really need that? All I want is a computer that works and one less headache.

There is a reason why apple's hardware costs a bit more ... IT WORKS and WORKS WELL. After working all-day, the last thing I want to do is have to put on an IT hat at home. The time-capsule is a bit of fresh air.

    Thanks apple!

    Avoid at all cost

    • Written by from Windlesham

Our 3rd Time Capsule has just packed in (as short shelf life as the other two - max 2 years), and it wasn't cheap.

Appalling since it's supposed to be a BACKUP solution that all our laptops have outlived.

We were seriously doubting whether to get another Time Capsule, but thought 3rd time lucky (or unlucky as it turns out).

Just save your money and prolong your life with 5 years by avoiding Time Capsule at all cost.

    Time capsule still delivering

    • Written by from East Lansing

I have held off placing a review until I had about 5 years experience with the Time Capsule - Have recently upgraded from a 500 GB model to the 2 TB model. I dropped my mac some while back and killed the hard drive - no problem recovering all my files and programs (except for a Microsoft partition). I installed the new drive, fed in my Mac OS DVDs and was prompted by the system to restore the drive when it saw a Time Capsule wireless device. It was all too easy after that - it was like the accident never happened. I have passed that Time Capsule device to my daughter and upgraded to the larger drive and we back up three computers on it. No problems at all. Great for wireless printing too. I was worried about reliability, but the two devices I have owned have worked flawlessly. Love it.

Don't count on it to save you...

    • Written by from San Diego

These are a great concept but poorly executed. My first one failed in year 2, and the second one has become unusable in year 1. The early ones had inadequate cooling, and frequently failed at 18 mos. (out-of-warranty) The replacement one, which I had to purchase (out-of-warranty) has made it's own internal hard drive unavailable on the network, with less than 10 days left on the warranty. My suggestion is to purchase an Airport Extreme, and go find a quality network storage device to attach. Good luck :)

First one lasted 18 months: second one lasted less than 2 weeks

    • Written by from GODALMING

I had intermittant problems for the last 6 months with my Time Capsule and eventually took it into a store and they could retrieve nothing from it. Totally fried. The second one (another £250) has lasted less than 2 weeks. Yes maybe I'm really unlucky. Or maybe they're not well made? This one is under warranty, thank goodness but a third 3 hour round trip in a month is not a good use of my life. Seriously rethinking .....
