does upgrades affect files and photos saved on current system?
I am currently on Leopard 10.5.8 and have bought the disc to upgrade to Snow leopard. Does upgrading risk any of the photos or files saved on my MAC?

Best AnswerNo, but I'd backup before the upgrade. The main thing upgrades affect are apps that may not be supported by a newer OS. Many - but not all - apps get rewritten for each OS, but sometimes you'll find one that is completely unsupported on the newer platform.

AnswerPeople talk about reserving at least 10% of hard disc space. Personally, I'd NEVER allow my system to get to that. It depends on what you are using your computer for. For example, do you edit video or use memory-intense apps that utilise all available ram? You'll want more space on your HD.
If you have any other devices connected to the same network, a solution is a HD connected to your TC's USB which can share files, stream movies etc. wirelessly. This frees up your main drive from media files, which are the bulk of many people's storage needs these days, allowing more space for working files, apps, etc. The main disadvantages to this approach are that this drive will not be backed up automatically by Time Machine, and also it's not a good solution for editing larger files as the transfer rate will be much slower than a directly-connected external drive. If you're just using it for bulk storage, it works well as you can just backup the entire disc manually if/when needed.
If you connect your additional HD direct to the iMac then this drive can also be automatically backed up by TC as normal.- Answered by Chris R from Goonellabah

I have imac os x tiger, can I upgrade to os x Lion?
I have an Imac os x (tiger). I bought an ipad 2. I must upgrade. Can I do this on my old imac? What do I upgrade to, and what will it cost?

Best AnswerYou can not upgrade to Lion directly. You have to upgrade to Leopard, Snow Leopard, and then through the Mac App Store you can upgrade to Lion. Depending on the hardware you have on your computer, you might be better off purchasing a new computer. Lion requires at least an Intel Core 2 Duo processor to run.

- Asked about: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard
Best AnswerYes, if you also have at least 1GB of memory.
I upgraded my Intel Core 2 Duo with OS 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard. While I could have upgraded directly over OS 10.4.11, I used a different method to upgrade in order to preserve my OS 10.4.11 files and settings in case something happens during install (like the power going out).
First, I created a new partition and formatted the partition with Snow Leopard's Disk Utility (found under the Utilities menu when one starts up from the Snow Leopard Installer DVD). Formatting needs to be "Mac OS Extended (Journalled)" or "GUID".
Second, install Snow Leopard to new partition. During install, the installer will search your mac for partitions with a previous OS, and ask if you want to import OS settings, apps and files. Do this to get everything moved and set up from your old OS. Or, don't do this and end up with a clean install of Snow Leopard.
Third, restart in Snow Leopard and do Software Update to OS 10.6.8.
End result: you have a dual boot Mac that can start up in either OS 10.4.11 or OS 10.6.8. Simply hold option key when starting up to choose. This comes in handy if you have printer or scanner drivers that need to be updated for Snow Leopard. Until updates are done, you can boot from OS 10.4.11 to use printer or scanner.- Answered by Ewald W from Vancouve

What is the range of the AirPort Extreme?
We are a publicly owned house museum, with two buildings. We must extend our wifi and web access to our main building, about 150 feet away, in order to monitor the controls for its climate control system. (We prefer not to run a cable, because of our site's historic nature.)

AnswerI use Microsoft Office 2008 on my older Macs at home and Office on my Intel based laptops and the Macvat school. I am a mathematician and need the features of symbolic capability and other necessary reference identifiers. I get all I need with Word. Colleagues with more publication needs use the software sold thru the American Mathematical Society. Also, Mathtype is available for use with Mac OS.
