I'm sorry to see that no one has answered your question. There is a huge difference between the Macbook Pro and Air. One the Macbook Pro is practically a powerhouse in a laptop. But it is more costly. Second, the Macbook Air doesn't have a disc drive, so unless you plan on using CD/DVD sharing on a home network, this could create a problem. The bottom line comes to this, what are you looking to spend and what is it that your son wants to accomplish with his Mac? If he wants to do gaming along with his school work then I'd suggest going with the Pro, but if it's just going to be for college then stick with the Air :)

  • Macbook Pro 13 inch vs 15 inch for Gaming

I am considering buying a new Macbook pro, either 13 inch or the lower end 15 inch one. The only thing thats getting in the way of my decision is the graphic card. I am not a huge gamer but I do play some games like Starcraft2, Sims3 and Diablo3 when it comes out. If the graphics are good on the 13 inch then I would love to buy the 13 inch, because the 15 inch is a little out of my price range. Anyways my question is, is the 13 inch macbook pro good enough for a mid level gamer? I also like to watch movies and shows on my laptop but i will probably get a bigger monitor in the future.

    Best Answer

The 13 inch will very likely *run* all of the games you mentioned (Starcraft2, Sims3 and Diablo3). I suspect this because I have a 13 inch model from 3 years ago when they first introduced the uni-body and made the 13 inch a Pro category laptop.

Here is the problem: it will very likely NOT run them *well*. The on-board Intel card for the 13-inch is, compared to 15 and 17, a *horrible* card. You can see that by looking all three cards up here:

google: "Mobile Graphics Cards - Benchmark List" (first hit)

The 13-inch's card (Intel HD Graphics 3000) ranks 208. For comparison, my card from 3 years ago ranks 257. Both are buried deep in the "Low-Midrange" category.

The lowest 15-inch card ranks 79. It is only 3 slots away from the "High End" category.

So the CURRENT 13-inch card is closer to my card from 3 YEARS ago than it is to the current 15-inch card. Not much of an upgrade, if you ask me. I will be going with the 15-inch. If I am going to shell out $1000+ for a new computer, want my gaming experience to be significantly better, not basically the same.

  • Do I need anti-virus software such as Norton for a MacBook?

Would anyone with a mac recommend anti-virus software or is there no need. Is it possible to get a virus?

    Best Answer

The best available software I have found is from Sophos.
    It is called Sophos Anti-virus.
It runs in the back ground and automatically updates.
It will stop you from downloading any virus laden files, and warn you if it finds any.
this is better than any of the anti-virus options available in the Mac App Store unfortunately, so it requires an old fashioned "drag to applications" install, but it is the best.
there aren't very many viruses or trojans available for the OSX platform, and even fewer that will work on Lion, but it is best to not have them at all.
    Hope this helps :)

  • Macbook air 13" vs MacBook pro 13"

What do u prefer? MacBook air 13" or MacBook pro13".

    Best Answer

I would strongly recommend the Pro. They cost about the same, and yes they are comparable TODAY. But in three years, when you want more memory for the new operating system, you'll find the Air limited by it's 4GB RAM maximum. I've owned mac laptops for years. Each one lasts me about 5 years. By the 3rd year, I'm doubling the RAM, for performance, and it really makes a difference. Also, after 3 years, it usually only costs about $50 to do that. With the Air, you'll just be stuck, and this will affect its resale, too.

  • Does Macbook pro come with a word processing program?

I am a writer & need a word processing program. My new Macbook pro didn't come with Pages. Should it have? If not, what would you reccommend?

    Best Answer

Your right, none of the Macs come with pages. It is available in the app store for purchase. I found myself getting iWorks from Apple and Microsoft office on my Macs. I use both word and pages, if you can afford to get both do so, if not pages is a good word processing app.

  • what screen is better for macbook pro glossy or anti glare? please help.

Hi i just want to buy a laptop the Mac book Pro for home personal use. As well as maybe for school. I like the glossy screen because its all shiny and looks pretty. But i heard it has a lot of problems because people get headaches easily and the reflection of the background is really annoying. I'm not sure about the anti glare but people say thats better because color is more real and its simple to use. I'm not sure which one to go for. I don't like the white outline i prefer black one but with the anti glare there is no black outline. Can anyone please tell me pros and cons of each and maybe help me make my decision. I went to store i checked anti glare. They didn't have any glossy one they only had the regular ones but i didn't seem to have problem with it but i'm not to sure. please help.

  • MacBook Air or MacBook Pro?

I am a sophomore in High School but take medical courses over the weekends and during the summer at Columbia University. I have dealt with a desktop for a few years but I need a laptop to take with me to my classes. I commute every day and want something that I won't notice I'm carrying around. I have a very heavy work schedule and need a laptop that is thin and light but that is powerful enough to run programs like Adobe Photoshop quickly. I don't mind spending more to get a heavily configured computer as long as it meets my needs. I'm torn between these two because I prefer the MacBook Air 13" but I'm worried that it won't be able to deal with Photoshop. I spend a lot of my time typing reports, creating powerpoints, and editing photos in photoshop.

    Best Answer

In your field of study i would suggest you use Macbook Air cause it is light, and easy to carry. However, for heavy graphic work like photoshops (like what you mentioned in your question) Macbook Air will not able to cope with it furthermore it will get hot especially the battery area and if the Macbook is not connected to the power, the consumption of the battery will only last for 2.5 hours. Macbook Air is designed for internet surfing, email sending only. Therefore in your case, I would suggest you get a Macbook Pro as it can handle heavy graphic design, full version of Microsoft Office Mac version, and it also come with a build in CD Rom in case you want to burn your works in a DVD. I use my Macbook Pro at work, as a columnist and publisher for a travel magazine and it work just fine and wonderful. Hope this may help you.

  • MacBook Air Vs. Macbook Pro?

I am currently going into college for a Forensic Chem. major this fall, and I have started looking at laptops for college. I have been looking at the specs and comparing the Air and the Pro for some time now, but still need help on making a final choice. My main issue is trying to figure out whether or not the 200 or 300 dollars is really worth it.

Also they say they both come with Preinstalled software, but never go into details about what is installed on the computers. If someone could go into a little more details about these parts of the computer I would be greatly thankful.

    Best Answer

First of all, the Air and Pro ship with the same exact software, which, soon, will be OS X Lion. You'd get iLife, iCal, iChat, Mail, Safari, etc. There's no difference there.

If price is a big issue, maaaaaybe the Air is better for you. You'd get far less hard drive space, though.

Remember to get the educational discount!

I guess the rest depends on what you'll be doing on your computer. You can certainly get by with an Air, but the specs aren't as polished and amazing as on the Macbook Pro. Plus, with the Pro, you get Firewire, backlit keyboard, Facetime HD, a better battery, RAM, and hard drive.

I'd recommend to anyone to get the Pro over the Air, but if money's a big issue for you, then the Air will suffice. If you cut spending or work a few more hours one week, you'll be able to make up the price difference in no time.

  • Can I use Quicken on a Mac

I've been using Quicken on my P.C. for years. I'd like to keep all of my records. Can I do this.

    Best Answer

Yes, there's a Mac version of Quicken, though the current version, Quicken Essentials, is actually somewhat limited. Many Mac users have switched to iBank 4, a full-featured personal finance manager for OS X. You'll be able to use the set-up assistant to import your old Quicken PC data, including accounts, transactions, categories and investments.

Macbook air 11 inches is just perfect as a notebook. It's small and fit perfect in book bag. The Air is discret, the teachers love that!

No, unless you buy an external blu-ray disc rom.

  • MacBook, MacBook pro or MacBook air

So like my pc got infected, and I'm tired of having to deal with windows problems and viruses so I'm giving Mac a try now. And I want to make a good choice/ decision on a laptop best suited for my needs, as I'm going to make this new computer my main computer. Frequent activities I do would be YouTube, facebook, msn , stickam as well as editing photos, and school assignments. And like I use these a lot, aside from homework :p and usually have all these programs run all at once, so I was wondering which would be best. Like I find the MacBook air simply cute, it's so tiny, but would it be able to handle the load? Or should I just go for a MacBook pro or MacBook instead? Because since this going to be replacing my previous computer, I want it to be more useful than just looks.

And are Macs really invincible as everyone make it seem against viruses? To the point where I don't need an antivirus program, and it'll do fine and dandy?

And how long do these laptop last? Like life expectancy wise? I'm currently going to school and as most people know, college students are poor, so I want this to be a long lasting investment. Thanks.

    Best Answer

You sound like me lol your best bet is to go with the macbook pro simply because it has he capacity that fits your needs, although pictures and music only take up a minuscule of space. I have the 13" i5 processor 4gb 500gb (they have 320 too and even thats alot of space) And you to save a couple dollars in your pocket get iwork for papers/hw/ect because you can easily convert any pages document into a word document. Pretty sweet huh. I wish someone would have told me that before i bought BOTH -____- lol Anyways go with the pro. You wont regret. Btw the macbook air has is good weight and size wise but they do have to sacrifice some things like storage space and only one usb port. Lame. And the macbook is just old and ugly lol Macbook Pro all the way.

  • Best Answer

no but all other mac book models do. you can get a external macbook air superdrive from the apple store though.

  • New Macbook Air or Pro for a college student

I'm going to be a college freshman this august and as such, I decided to buy a mac. I basically use my computer for surfing the web, listening to music, watching movies on netflix, writing papers and making powerpoints. I often have a lot of apps open at once because I like to multitask. I neither do gaming nor do I edit movies or photos. (If I ever will edit movies, it'll be light and only for a college assignment). I'll also be taking my mac to class so I want it to be portable. On a last note, I use very very little hard drive space (80 gb max) but I like my computers to be very snappy.

At first, I decided that the 13' Pro would be perfect since it has speed and space I need. However, as the new airs came along offering a fast processor 4 gb ram and lightweight profile, I became very confused. Should I be going for the $1299 13' macbook air or base model 13' macbook pro? Is the macbook pro significantly faster than the air or will it be mildly noticeable? Also, if I buy the macbook pro, I could update it to an ssd. So, please help me figure out which one I should buy? Sorry for the long message but I wanted to be thorough because I likely won't be buying another computer for quite a while after this. Thanks so much.

I think you should go for Air as its handy. Hard disk problem can be cured by buying and external one. Moreover you're a student and doesn't need much from your Mac. I suggest you to go for an Air. It will even look good when you'll get it to school. And everyone will be like OMG I must also have one. Believe me I was also confused between it and finally chose Air and it really changed my life.

  • Macbook pro 13 inch or 15 inch??

I'm currently a windows user and I haven't had time to head over to the apple store for personal insight so I'm highly curious. I'm going to purchase a new macbook pro soon but here is my concern. I'm a sophomore college student and honestly, I'm not using it for any advanced stuff (yet). So should I get the 13 in or 15 in?

    What I mainly do is:
    Web surf
    E-mail
    Streaming videos (youtube)
    Music
All of the office documents (word, excel, powerpoint, etc)
    The BASICS

And what I definitely want is a fast processor in which I may not have to worry about because of the little uses I have for it (listed above).

I definitely know that the MBP 13 inch does that but I REALLY want a bigger screen size because I may think the 13 inch is too small. I currently have a 17 inch HP g7 model and I think a little smaller screen would be perfect for me to actually take it out. Is it really worth the extra $500 for a bigger screen? I'm sure the 15 inch has some extra specs that I'll get to learn soon. But remember, I'm only using for the basics for it until I actually do some "heavy duty stuff" on the laptop but I want a larger screen. Help!

    Best Answer

For you the 13" Macbook Pro would be the best choice. It will do everything you want to use it for. If you are going to play COD or other 3D rendering games, or you want to do extensive (like Final Cut Pro extensive) movie editing, then you'll want one of the 15" Models. If you just want more screen real estate, get an external monitor. The Macbook Pro drives that huge 27 apple monitor so it ought to handle any smaller one with ease.

  • Is the 13 inch Macbook pro too slow? Is the 15 inch worth it?

I currently have a 15 inch HP, I'm tired of that computer being too slow, heavy (6.5) and bad battery life.
So I'm going for a Macbook, My choices are between the 13 inch core i7 Macbook Pro and the basic 15 inch core i7 Macbook pro.
I basically just surf the web, make school papers, view videos on youtube and a lot of Itunes and I want to learn to use Garage Band.
Is the graphic difference between the 13 and 15 inch so high? Is the 15 inch too heavy or too big? Or is a Macbook Air a good option?

    Thanks!

    Best Answer

I would say that a 13" MBP would be a perfect computer for you. It has nice portability, all the ports you need (SD card slot, all that jazz) it's very light (compared to your HP, at least) and will have plenty of power to handle what you're doing. It also has a nice big hard drive for lots of music and files. The graphics in the intel hd300 graphics will be plenty for the average user, even handling some games and Photoshop and whatnot.

  • Is a macbook air good for gaming?

Hi I'm looking for a macbook that can play minecraft and steam downloaded games (not sure if they are in the same category) Could I use a macbook air for this? If not please recommend which macbook I should go with (not I don't want 15in or bigger since i travel and bigger laptops are a pain to carry in a backpack. I'm grateful for recommendations.

    Best Answer

It'll work, but it won't be as smooth or beautiful as it would be on, say, a 13-inch MacBook Pro.
The MacBook Air is designed for sleekness and portability rather than outright performance, while the Pro was designed for breakneck performance that will give your games a new level of good.
A 13-inch MacBook Pro with either processor option would do you just fine.

  • is a macbook air 128gb flash storage enough

i would be using it for surfing the web, doing emails and photo ediding, and writing quite a few documents in office.

    Best Answer

email and documents take up very little space. Music and photo editing can take up a good bit of space. A 128 GB SSD should suffice for all of those things in most cases. I'd suggest you get a cheap external harddrive (500 GB about the size of your wallet for <$100) instead of forking out cash for a 256 GB SSD. These little external hard drives are tiny, cheap and connect via USB without the need for a separate power supply. Alternatively, you can connect an external USB harddrive directly to your Apple Airport Extreme wireless router. This gives you wireless access to the drive when at home (or via internet if you are a very advanced user). Another really good option is the PogoPlug. The PogoPlug plugs into any router to provide your own personal cloud storage. The PogoPlug is about $70 on amazon. Add a USB harddrive to PogoPlug. In about 5 minutes, even a novice user will be up an running with access to an wirelessly attached storage device (cloud storage). The PogoPlug or similar personal cloud storage devices, your harddrive size will no longer matter (provided you are on your home network or connected to the internet)

Software and video are much more likely to eat up your harddrive space. If you install lots of software or download video (Youtube, TV or movies), then you will run out of disk space very quickly.

In summary, there are lots of good alternatives to paying outrageous prices for larger SSD drives on your MacBook Air.
