No, the adapter works the other way around. It's to connect a Mac with a thunderbolt port to a device that has a Firewire800 port.

The purpose of this adapter is largely to provide a way for people who have existing FireWire drives to new computers that don't have a FW800 port, but do have a TB port (e.g. New Ret MBP, MBA etc).
Oh, your answer, no. It's a male TB plug and a female FW800 port.- Answered by Michael A from Goleta

No it is to connect a thunderbolt equipped computer to a firewire drive (i.e. you need a thunderbolt port on your iMac).

No. It's for connecting FireWire peripherals to a Thunderbolt port. It doesn't work the other way round. Also there would be little benefit in it working the other way round as the FireWire port on your iMAC would be a bottleneck so you would see no noticeable speed increase over a standard FireWire drive.

If I had a firewired iMac with a 800FW port and cable, couldn't I plug this TH/FW connector to the external HD and then plug the FW cable to the female FW port? In other words, using the TH/FW connector with a 800FW cable.

I don't think so. This is to give thunderbolt equipped Macs firewire capability, not the other way around.

No. It only works for computers that have thunderbolt ports built-in.
