Does my computer need to be running to use Apple TV? Or can the Apple TV device store media or access the iCloud directly?

If you're computer isn't running, the Apple TV can still access any music you have in iTunes Match, or any movies and tv shows you previously purchased from iTunes. It can also access Netflix, Youtube, Podcasts, Photo Stream, the iTunes Movie Store and Flickr.

Yes, it can access any movies, TV shows and music that you have purchased on iTunes. Thanks to the 5.2 update Apple TV can access purchased iTunes music without having to subscribe to iTunes Match. It can also connect to Netflix, YouTube, Hulu and it allows you to check baseball, basketball, hockey and football score.
