The failure rate of all HD's on the market after 3 year is 60%, I don't know what its at at 1.5 years but you are better off with an extra HD in one of your computers that can easily be replaced if it starts throwing errors or corrupting data. If you are worried about it working in 18 mos. there is also applecare... This only replaces the device and not the data however. Short of a drobo or raid solution, apple offers some of the best dependability around. Just remember, you normally get whatyou pay for, and if it ounds too good to be true....

Today I'm going over to the Los Gatos store to buy a new 2TB Time Capsule. My old one was purchased in 2001 and is only a 1TB. It hasn't failed or anything, it just ran out of space to back up my 2TB LaCie video RAID server, my MacAir and two other drives. 10 years old and still kicking. How much is that in "people years"?

I have just gotten off the phone with Applecare support because the time capsule I bought in May 2008 (YES, 2008!) has just died. I will be buying the 3TB Time Capsule to replace it and only hope that I will get as much use out of the new one as I did out of the last. I don't know if my experience was typical, but I am very happy with the Time Capsule indeed! :-)
