    Vestax for the People

Handling this thing is a dream: lightweight and compact enough rest it in my lap, DJ casually for friends, pass it around and everyone can basically figure it out. It really opens the doors to make DJing casual, fun, and ubiquitous. Getting it to sound good requires skill at selecting tunes and mixing them - same as DJing ever was. It's not built like pro-level gear which is designed to withstand heavy use, but it's still really nice for what it does - not simply a kid's toy as some pros suggest.

Djay & Spin are designed for Mac: refined to the point of being simple, elegant, beautiful, integrated with iTunes, and really works well - it doesn't have every feature in the book (and maybe misses some that pros may find important) - but it's straightforward, great to handle and use, and it does the job it claims to do very well.

I've been djing since the early 70's...I have seen our dj tools change dramatically over the years.....this controller is truly the best bargain, price wise and quality wise, for the money.....not exactly able to withstand everyday club use, but very capable of performing well for the one or two nights a week mobile jock, which I am now....remember, it still takes talent to work the crowd, and great dj's will find this tool to be a refreshing alternative to hauling around a lot more equipment...

    A ton of fun!

I'm not a DJ but I love music and I have a ton of it. With this device, I'm able to make my own mixes, scratch, blend, and add effects. This is a great tool for somebody that loves to play around with music and isn't trying to be a pro. It's user friendly and fun to use. I give it 5 stars all the way!

Well I have played with this thing for a day now and I have to admit I was surprised at how good quality of a controller this is. The track pads are sturdy and it is easy to rest on your lap. Microphone is super sensitive but seems to work well. Arrow buttons on controller make it a breeze to cue up songs. Ability to play through computer speakers or audio out it has makes it very convenient as well. As stated the software only works with mac and it is very convenient and easy to use. This thing is very fun to play around with but I would never be seen with it in public like at a venue. All my friends have enjoyed using it as well. Think of this like a beginner instrument if you had been in band, it is great to learn on and at a good price to where you can find out if you should invest more money in better equipment down the road. I am happy with my purchase and will be buying 2 more for newly inspired friends. Very well thought out product.

This is the real review for serious DJ's...

    DON'T GET IT.

If you're a serious DJ, you're better off paying another $100 and getting the Traktor Kontrol S2 for $399. This spin is cool if you're a small bedroom dj and doing it as a hobby but I still wouldn't recommend paying $280 for this. The gain slider has to be played with every time you load a new song, otherwise it will sound low. Sound card is not good. I just can't recommend this, even for newbies.

Fun, light, ergonomic, economical and functional.

When I first plugged it in to play, I was not feeling it... Something did not seem right... It was too small it thought.

However, after a few hours of playing around, I now love this little machine. I'm going to Costa Rica to live for a few months and this is going to be perfect to make and record music while abroad.

Set-up is a breeze and to have my entire music library accessible is priceless. You can record, sample, loop, scratch, cue up your music and know BPMs. There is also an online community/forum that seems active.

At first I did not like the sync option, but have learned that this option allow you the freedom to focus your game on adding, innovating and enhancing the music you are making.

This was not created to replace professional DJ equipment, but to get more people involved in making music. This world needs more creative people!

I would recommend this controller to anyone... All old and new school DJs set up!

    Big smile!

OMG! I never write reviews because frankly normally things behave like I expect them to or thereabouts. This DJ console however put a BIG smile on my face. This is because Vestax was the first professional dual CD unit I bought when I was a professional DJ 15 years ago. And let me tell you - Vestax still knows how a DJ thinks and works. This USB unit has little or no latency/delay and it truly gives you the feeling of working with vinyl on Technics1200 turntables again.
If you like DJing and miss the old times when you could 'touch' the music - this is for you. i will bring out my old gear and dust off myself over the holidays. I am back baby!

So I just got my spin/djay combo in the mail (I was lucky enough to have ordered it before it got back ordered for 3 months!!) anyways here's what I have to say about it. It's very light and toy like, all plastic materials..I think i prefer eq knobs with kill switches over eq faders. I also feel the software is almost too intuative as it resets the eq postions and tempo contols when new songs are loaded to the decks, this makes it very frustrating when you physically see you eq's and speed/tempo contols are set to certain points but the really are set back to defaults. Wavelengths should be added as an upgrade in the near future to the djay softare to give you more of a feel for the tracks while cueing especially when the music is playing really loud in a party type environment. A major question mark for me now is the usb cable..for some reason it is so sensitive that when it gets even the lightest tap or movement it kills the whole set..I mean i had to actually close out djay and restart it because the controller became non-responsive and/or the audio out got reset to cpu as opposed to master. VERY FRUSTRATING!! If i had been spinning an actual gig that would have been horrific. Overall because it's an introduction to the world of dj'ing tool it's bang on for beginners and easy to use. It's very pleasing to the eye as is the software. I am very happy with my purchase and I hope djay will release updated software with more of a professional feel and look. Great job vestax, algoriddim and apple. Oh yeah matching dj headphones would also be a great additon to the set.

    Not Worth It

The Vestax spin is ok for beginner dj, well not even... Its a child's toy. Your better off spending an extra $50 and get the DDJ-WeGO from Pioneer Dj. It comes with Virtual DJ LE costomized for the controler, and can even be used with the djay app. It also comes with actual cue buttons instead of manualy having to press them on your computer.... So ya spend that extra $50 bucks.

I purchased this to use for my 7th & 8th grade dances. I've been playing with it at home and it seems to be perfect, I'm tired of all the cds and they get heavy. HOWEVER I quickly discovered that most of the new music I have from iTunes is DRM protected and cannot be played through this unit. It was my hope to download music for the dances from iTunes but that doesn't seem to be an option. I guess I'll just have to import cds.

Not sure what the bad reviews are all about. I am a DJ and this thing is awesome. It is simple to use, and works exactly as it should. In the past, was using Sereto, which seemingly everyone uses. This is so much less bulky and easier to set up, and in the end, it really does everything Sereto does, and then some. The best thing about the product is it doesnt matter if you are a pro or a first time spinner, you can pick this up and start mixing. Again, really great product!

I was so intent on getting on of these until I was discouraged by the backorder. However later on that week I just glanced inside my local Apple store and there was one of these sitting on the shelf, and I've never been so quick to grab a product before!

This is a great way to find out if you really have interest in being a DJ. Out of the box you already feel like you can do a lot, and once you start to progress, there are still many things you can do with this that didn't seem possible without the huge upgrade to a $1,000+ set up. A great start for anyone with an interest in DJ'ing!

Some "DJ's" would lead you to believe that the Vestax Spin is merely a toy for beginners. While it certainly is a great introductory controller for the aspiring DJ, the Spin is capable enough to serve as part of a compact setup if you like to travel light (and who DOESN'T?), or as a backup. The price also makes it very attractive, considering the manufacturer...... which also explains why Apple Stores can't keep them on the shelves.

Best MIDI controler for the price

    • Written by from SAINT CHARLES

This is by far the best MIDI controller on the market for the price. The jog wheels are responsive and the sensitivity is adjustable it has a master out to go to powered speakers or to an amp. It has the ability to cue up tracks through monitoring on your headphones. This deck would normally cost about $700 but since apple decided to purchase a ton it looks like were lucky that it is @ at $249... BUY THIS !!!

I worked as a dj For 8 years. Spinning on Newmark decks and controllers using cds and hard media. Now switched to Mac book pro with Vestax Spin and djay 3 software. Use for small jobs and fun with friends works well for the money not sure if it would hold up to club use. I am planning to use for summer in a club and will see how it lasts. Software not hard to use love I-tunes sysnc . The mic is weak but run real mic through mixer works just fine.

It plays music and is cheap.

    • Written by from Tonawanda

I have used this rig for 10 gigs this summer. It is just OK. Mic controls are useless, no EQ, output is premaster so keeping levels set is a huge pain in near field situations.
The software is just minimal, TOO MUCH WASTED SCREEN SPACE. Huge latency issue on deck gain controls. Come on you can use a larger deck display font than 6 point! Not everyone is hauling a 30" monitor out on a gig. No waveforms. Just minimal junk. As the title says "It plays music and is cheap"
Oh and you can keep the Toy mic that is supplied... How about a gig bag instead, maybe one that will carry the Spin and the Macbook!??

"Well then why don't you get something better!" you say! Well I did! Want a good deal on a "Spin"?
The point is Apple should have a higher standard for what it sells in it's store!
I thought that was Apples' stock in trade.

    Cool product, but unfortunately unusable.

The Vesatex Spin DJ USB Controller is a great product. The wheels feel great, and the touch sensitivity works seamlessly with the djay software. The faders seem a bit cheap, but integrate seamlessly with the software and work perfectly. I wish that there was more control over effects from the controller. The effects are pitch, echo, and reverb, and the only thing you can do from the controller is activate one effect (and I've only been able to activate echo from the controller. The other two I have to use my mouse). Overall, the controller is a 4 star product.

The big issue for me, however, is the software. The software would be fantastic, except for one huge flaw that ruins it. When loading a track onto one of the virtual turntables (we'll say B-Table), sometimes (not every time, but quite often), the track that is playing (A-Table) will slow down, skip, and become choppy until the B-Table track is loaded and the beat is analyzed. This downfall makes this product entirely unusable. I cannot mix music knowing that loading tracks will cause the playing track to chop and skip. It's an issue that ruins the entire product for me.

I won't be returning it yet since it's still fun to play around with and I use it to practice putting together mixes that will be performed on different equipment, but for anything more than playing for yourself or checking out arrangements to see if they work well together, this software/hardware combination is useless due to the skipping playback. An unfortunate downfall to an otherwise great product.

Great Product, but it has flaws. . .

Overall, I can't really complain too much. I bought this product to use DJing dances for a high school summer camp. It was a great tool for cuing, mixing, looping and beat matching. Have not used FX or scratching much other than just messing around, but seems like it would sound good with some practice.

My only real complaint is the mic. It is AWFUL!! When turned on it is all static and no voice. I am looking to buy a real full sized mike to use with this in the future. Thankfully I was using a sound board along with my MBP and Spin so I could connect a mic that way.
