It does work with SOME on-demand services

    • Written by from EDINBURGH

I pondered for a while whether to get this cable or not, as I really wasn't clear which on-demand services it was compatible with. After visiting a store to ask the staff, it seems there was a little confusion at their end too, which probably isn't Apple's fault per se.

Basically, this cable will only mirror the full audio/video of on-demand apps if the app-maker/content-creator allows it. I've tried it with a few different services and, contrary to what one other commenter here says, it does actually work with iPlayer. Well, I watched a range of TV shows from my iPad Mini on the big screen, no issues, but that's not to say there won't be some shows that won't work if there is rights-related issues.

I tried it with LoveFilm, only the audio worked. With 4oD, nothing worked at all. Luckily, the main player I wanted this cable fore - Eurosport Player - does work with it.

So yeah, if you're looking to stream content from on-demand players to your TV, just bear in mind some work, some don't.

I'm giving it 4 stars because it's mostly fine for my needs, and it does actually work for content stored on the device itself, as well as YouTube and the likes. I just wish Apple would put a warning somewhere in the product description explaining the issue with on-demand - I bet a lot of folk buy this cable only to be disappointed.

Good product but pricey & satisfaction depends on a few factors

    • Written by from Kendall Park

All the questions I had were not answered in one place for this product, so here is my summary from reviews, my local Apple store and my first experience with it.

I bought this adapter for use with my iPad Air. It was a success with minor caveats. Overall I was satisfied because the video apps I wanted to display worked and were shown at 1080p resolution I expected. Your results may vary.

HDMI cable: It does not come with one. Have a spare one ready.

Resolution. You will get 1080p with an iPad Air only, 720p with earlier iPad models.

Premium video services: Some allow HDTV display, some do not. Do not blame your iPad or this adapter. You can watch all video apps on your iPad, BUT each video app decides HDTV display support individually. Apparently the iPad and the apps know when you are connected to a TV, just like a laptop knows with a projector for proper presentation formatting. HBO GO supports displaying on an HDTV connected with the adapter, but Amazon Instant Prime and Showtime Anytime do not. According to other reports I read, Netflix also works (but I don’t have it and could not test it).

Non-premium video apps: All I tested worked well, including movies downloaded to my iPad Air and YouTube.

Video quality: I had 1080p resolution with all video with my iPad Air. There was slight video noise with HBO Go on one of my Samsung HDTVs, but none on my second one.

Non-video apps: All non-video apps I tried displayed fine with 1080p clarity and no video noise.

So in summary, your satisfaction will depend on which apps you want to display on your HDTV, at what resolution and with the high price charged for this adapter.

Burnin display on the iPad 4 retina

    • Written by from Dedham

I just bought the lightning to HDMI adapter for my iPad last week. The device works great and the picture quality is amazing. I primarily use it to plug in my iPad to my TV and watch Netflix. The other day I noticed that when I went to go to another app after unplugging the adapter from my iPad that Netflix was burned into the center of my display on the iPad. When using the Netflix app while using the adapter, when the video is playing it is only playing on the tv and the iPad has the generic Netflix logo with the red background. Is there a way I can eliminate this? Is this a Netflix app thing or an apple thing? Any advise would be awesome!

Works Great With iPad (4th Generation)

    • Written by from Medford

This adapter mirrors the display of my iPad. When watching videos using the built-in Video app, the TV displays everything (no scaling issues). Some apps, however, do not completely use the area of the TV display when using this adapter (e.g. IMDB, Apple Trailers, YouTube).

This adapter is too pricey but I bought it anyway because I needed one. I am, however, satisfied with it.

    AV Adapter works with....

    • Written by from Cambridge

Following other reviews, I bought one of these and this is what it works with so far.

FilmOn - works perfectly with all channels displaying on TV
TVCatch Up - works perfectly, although this program not as good as it once was
BBC iPlayer - worked perfectly on programs I tried
ITV Player - worked on programs I tried
Demand 5 -worked on programs I tried
    Sky Go - not working
    Sky News - worked
Netflix - worked on programs I tried
Blink box - worked on programs I tried
YouTube - worked on the ones I tried
General Apps - seemed to work OK

SkyGo comment - you can appreciate why Sky do not want this to work as they are selling their own Internet product called Now TV and would lose revenue - they are a commercial operation and money is King, so if you are after something for nothing from Sky, then it's a no-no. I do not work for Sky, by the way. I have been with them since day 1 as a customer when they were investing millions and operating at a loss and their investments are now paying off, good luck to them.

Screen resolution - as other posters have said, you can see the same size as the iPad (iPad Mini in my case) and I could zoom slightly using the TV screen options, but could not get it to fill the whole screen. Don't know about 5.1 sound, but the sound came thru the TV stereo speakers OK which is all I need.

    Not limiting to certain apps

    • Written by from Sacramento

Although it's overpriced it allows me to watch any app on my flatscreen! I don't need an audio cable anymore. The image quality is great. I use it everyday to watch Netflix, Hulu, Jtv, Veetle, among others

Plugged in my iPhone 5 to my TV and it's as easy as that! Both audio and video are clear. I've used it for slideshows, movies on my phone, and Netflix streaming so far. This will be perfect for streaming movies over LTE to any hotel HDTV. It does seem a bit costly though.

I found the solution for "Mode not supported"

    • Written by from Massillon

If you get the "Mode not supported" message when you try to hook up this adapter and HDMI cable to your TV, don't panic! After Crutchfield (where I bought my TV) assured me that it SHOULD work, I did some experimenting and found the solution! There are four HDMI jacks on the back of my TV, but only one of them says HDMI/DVI. I have no idea what that means, but that's the jack that works! So it makes sense now that the reviews here and on Amazon are a mixture of "Works great" and "Doesn't work!" If you happen to plug it into the right jack it does work beautifully. If you just put it in a regular HDMI jack, no good. So give that a try. I hope it works!

Not sure why so many have an issue with this. Yes, it's extremely overpriced but it works fine. I use it at least once a week to watch movies on my 50" plasma with no issues whatsoever. I've used with both my iPhone and my iPad.

    Works Well

    • Written by from Los Angeles

This adapter works very well, it does mirror what's on the screen of my 5s as well as my iPad Air. I think it's a bit overpriced, but an alright item. I think for the price, an HDMI cord, and / or an AC adapter should be included in the current price.

    Just pure awesomeness!

    • Written by from San Francisco

Speaking for the iphone 5s and up to the 6+. This adapter is pure magic. You can so far play anything your iphone throws at you through your HD tv!
Netflix? Yes, clash of clans? You got it! Rented or owned movies, tv series..... Walking dead? Of course! All in glorious HD full screen! So far i'm glad i made the purchase. A little overpriced but good quality.
See i wanted to get the apple TV but my xbox one can do most of the stuff apple tv throws at you. This adapter will make your dilemas easier between buying a Apple TV or not.
So far i haven't had any issues described by the other reviews. I've had this miracle of a portal for over a year and still using it to the fullest.

I have used this cable to connect my iPad air to my tv. From the reviews I read it do not work on Iplayer, itv player apps and so on. However, this cable connected such apps to my tv in full screen view (the apps can be viewed on TV despite what others say) The only down side is when using none tv apps it is not full screen viewing on my tv (50inch)

    Works fine

    • Written by from Singapore

Got this adapter for 2 weeks and still using it. Currently, I have used lightning digital AV adapter to connect iPad Air and Samsung smart TV, working fine. It depends on the program running from iPad to show full screen at Samsung smart TV. If the output from original file could not support, then there will not be any full screen on TV. Likewise to the HD resolution too. iPad is charging fine while connected through digital AV adapter.

It's value, not price, making this iDevice accessory a must!

    • Written by from Burnaby

By using the Digital AV Adapter with our new iPad Air, my wife was convinced of its value AND usefulness when she was able to almost effortlessly connect it to the HDTV and watch daily Hong Kong soap operas not yet available for another year on Canadian cable TV.

I cheekily only gave this 4 out of 5 stars because now I have to buy an iPad Mini with Retina Display for her so I can get the iPad Air back for my use... ;)

Not as good as the 30 Pin Digital AV Adapter

    • Written by from Keenesburg

Works well for driving a signal to an HDMI or DVI (with HDMI to DVI converter). I was a little disappointed because the older 30 pin version allowed me to drive a video signal to a monitor AND connect to my Mac Air simultaneously.... I was fond of loading new movies onto my iPad while I watched a show.

This new adapter only supports charging your iPad ... not as good. If you are like me and used the older 30 pin adapter this subtle difference in functionality may not be apparent (although it is clear in the product description). Not one of the on-line reviews I read mentioned this difference in functionality.

    great product but pricey

    • Written by from Hanmer

this product works very well. on bothy my iphone 5 and ipad. I use it all the time at home, at work and when I travel. My vehicle has an HDMI port and this makes it extremely easy to play movies for my kids when travelling.
My only gripe is its very expensive. $29.99 would be a more reasonable price for this type of product.

    • Written by from Oakland

I have an iPhone 5s with Sony Bravia and it looks awesome in 1080p. It does mirror, until I play a video. Don't know if it works differently with other models between iPhones and tv's, but it might be the case.
I never give a 5 star on anything unless, it does the dishes, takes out the trash or does the laundry for me.
