If all you want to do is watch DVDs this works just fine...
But if you want to burn an audio CD you're screwed. I've been trying to burn CDs for hours and everytime the tracks have skipping in them. I had my computer laying on a bed and decided that was the problem. Switched to a table and had the same problem...

Fine when it works. Usually it doesn't.

Bought this to use with a new mac mini without a cd/dvd drive. When it works, it's fine. Unfortunately it usually *doesn't* work. Plug it into any port on the mini and get the dreaded "A USB device needs more power" message - even when it's plugged directly into the back of the mac!

I'm ditching this one and looking for another one with an actual power supply.

Cannot burn DVD on this thing!

I need to burn a sideshow to a DVD so I first tried a DVD+RW. It would not allow me to burn to the disc. Then I went online and read somewhere that a DVD-R was needed. I went out and bought the qty I needed and spend $23 to find that it does not burn to those either. I am a new Apple user and cannot understand why the darn manual this thing comes with doesn't indicate what types of DVD's are compatible with it! This shouldn't be so difficult. Still need to burn to a DVD and don't know what to do as I can't just keep buying various types of DVDs hoping that they will work. Unbelievable.

Apple DVD player still has the regional lock for DVD's unfortunately some of Apple products like this DVD player is based on 1990's technology. Please spend a few dollars from the billions to update the DVD player.

Went back to the store today to return the 1st "SuperDrive" I purchased. The CD would insert, make a bit of noise and then sit it back out. I tried all types of software and nothing worked. I asked the staff to please plug it in to see if it worked (perhaps I was doing something wrong?). They said "Oh we are so sorry! Let's just get you another one so you can get on with your day!" 4 minutes later I was out the door with a shinny new box. Guess what happened?? #2 shinny box doesn't work either!! WTH??!!

Love my new 27" Mac but the Superdrive is a dud...

I followed all the instructions to update etc, plugged it right into the Mac (it wouldn't even turn on through a usb hub) even went to the online chat for help and all it does is take in the DVD or CD ( I tried both) begin to make all the right noises... then spits out the DVD/CD.
I thought maybe I had a "one off" dud, but after reading some of the other testimonies... I'm not to sure about that
Back to the store it goes and hopefully the replacement will be five stars

    Painfully slow

This is the slowest DVD drive I've experienced in ten years. When installing software from DVD, it takes between 2-3 hours per DVD, regardless of the software I'm installing. I'm now looking at a 10 DVD software install which will likely take over 24 hours. Overpriced, extremely underpowered, and very disappointing.

Problematic Right Out of the Box

I bought my external SuperDrive last week and cracked it open today to rip audiobook CDs into my iTunes library. Much to my great aggravation, this "Super"drive couldn't rip CDs until each disc was re-inserted multiple times and/or I repeatedly plugged/unplugged the USB connection on the drive. Through most of my adult life I've been such a huge proponent of Apple products and have owned multiple computers/iMacs/MacBooks over the years (along with multiple variants of iPods, iPhones, Time Capsules, etc). So for an Apple product to not work properly out of the box is both surprising and, based on my prior history with their products, entirely disappointing. This review is based on the drive I currently have on hand. I will return this POS tomorrow and see what happens. If so, I will write a new review. But for now, if I could give this thing a zero stars I would.

    A Poor Excuse

Unit comes nicely packaged and looks like it would be a quality Apple product. Alas upon close inspection the unit is flimsy and the cord is not at all designed for portability. After just over 3 months the unit bit the dust and won't even turn on.

is this really an apple product ?

On my 2nd now as first was DOA and 2nd also. will not accept discs at all. tried in 3 macs - 6 different usb slots didn't recognise any one of about 10 discs
plugged in launched software update no update required
With all the terrible reviews on here this product should actually be pulled.
btw you have to give an unusable product at least one star to get the rating on !
despite being a loyal apple user for 20 years my real rating is no stars

I bought this about a year ago and barely used it. It stopped being able to read discs, just does whir/to/fro noise and then spits out. Mostly love apple but lemons like this really annoy me. Poor showing Apple.

"Super"?... How about a Regular that works?

After reading a number of 1- and 2-star reviews I was skeptical. I thought these people must be doing something wrong. I had just bought a new iMac (no DVD Drive anymore, folks) and decided to go against the grain and get a DVD drive after all (still, I wouldn't dare dreaming about a Blue Ray drive). So I went out and bought one. Little did I know I'd be writing a nice 1-star review in no time. The Super Hero was DOA from Santa Monica to Culver City or about 10 miles. I couldn't believe that under a labyrinth of ribbons and complicated shiny cellophane contraptions there lay a piece of dead junk at the bottom of its modernistic white coffin. Talk about pretentious! To make double sure my machines were in order I plugged it to both my iMac and my MBP. Da Supa Jive was neither seen by any of them nor would it accept a DVD. I should have known better. When Apple says, "No DVD," it means it. Even if you go ahead and buy one. Tomorrow back in the car, 10 miles in, ten miles out, like I got nothing better to do. Oh, well. I hope it tilts the star-rating balance by a notch.

    poor design and performance

I bought a Macbook Air and the external USB "super" drive to import CD's and movies. It has not been super. The USB Superdrive will not eject my CD. This has been intermittent from the start but I could usually get the CD to eject by using Finder to display the drive and ejecting from there. It just grinds away and then reloads.

Why isn't there an eject button on the drive itself? I don't want to take it apart just to get my disc out.

I'll be pursuing a replacement under the warranty.

How do I make it work?

Yesterday I bought a new IMAC 27 and sadly learned that my DVD players don't have outputs that connect to the IMAC input ports so today I bought the USB Super Drive which the Apple salesman assured me would work with the computer. It seems simple. The installation instructions , all of them, say to update the soft ware and plug the Super Drive into a USB port. I did that. No where on the computer could I find any indication that it was installed. System Preferences has an icon for CDs and DVDs but that tells me nothing. I inserted a half dozen CDs and DVDs, including some made specifically for MACs. The Super Drive sucked then in, held them about ten seconds, then spit them out. Nothing appeared on the screen to indicate that they were read. I can't find any instructions anywhere.

Purchased brand new. Plugged it in and it was dead. It doesn't deserve the one star I was forced to give. I guess the one star is for the packaging.

does not import cds from some labels such as atlantic etc. Apple need to stop worrying about the competition copying their ideas and start focusing on there own products that are failing. Otherwise the competition will rise above them simply by making a product that works. Disappointed apple, are you starting to loose the plot?
