    Loose connector, cable frays

    • Written by from Dundee

The new MagSafe makes a much looser connection and is easily bumped out if you're not using it on a desk, or move your laptop around at all. More concerning though is that within 6 months it has frayed dangerously at the brick-end. Very poor.

    Unplugged Again!

Searched online to see if anyone else was having issues with this adapter, and see that others have experienced the same problem I am having. I usually use this computer while sitting on the couch, and move it back and forth from the coffee table to my lap. I have found the cord often becomes unplugged. Previously had an MacBook Air, which I used the same way and can't recall having any such issues. The magnet seems strong when plugged in, but if tilted slightly up or down from movement, it falls out. Nothing I can't live with, but mildly annoying.

    Mostly bad design

The magnet is definitely not strong enough on this charger. I've been through 3 chargers for my retina so I know exactly what I'm talking about. The charger also runs very hot.

Worst of all, the charger is extremely hard to find retail (I was left stranded when my puppy chewed one until it could be shipped), and costs a significant amount more than the other chargers. You have to find the exact charger for your macbook. I could be wrong here, but I think each model and screen size has a different charger. How hard could it be to standardize a charger?

I like the T design, but as stands I much prefer the side fitting charger for its magnetic strength. That being said, it is still a lot better than many PC chargers - but Apple has disappointed me with its design.

    falls out too easily

if pulled directly, it stays plugged in well enough....but with any bump or pull vertically, it comes unplugged. incredibly inconvenient as it constantly detaches while on lap or whenever moving the computer.

    Very weak magnet

This magnet is very weak compared to previous MagSafe versions and as a result it is constantly faling off when used on any surface other then a desk.

    I hate the weak magnet!!!!

It sticks out and the magnet is so weak it falls out if i move even the slightest bit, it is SO annoying i hate it. Not to mention, if I forget to bring my charger to school, I can't borrow anyone else's bc it's incompatible with older chargers. At least it charges (in the event it actually stays connected). Apple should issue every single customer and adapter for this POS, terrible design.

    New adapter inconvenient

Next to what other people have been saying about the adapter I want to note how annoying the t shaped connector is. I love putting the MBP on my lap to work on stuff but with the new T shaped connector it easily gets disconnected. This NEVER happened to the L shaped connector. It's very tricky to have it on your lap and not have it disconnect. One constantly has to be aware of the adapter. It's no good!

    Not Pleased

Ok I love the magnetic feature of the adapter but I hate the new look. The magnet doesn't stay in the Mac like it did in the old Macbook Pro as well. When I move my Mac around it detaches too easily. I can't stand that. Overall love the concept still of the magnet but don't like the new look or design. Not functional and that is unlike Apple.

    Dissapointed

Just like the last versions of the magsafe power adaptors the cord is prone to splitting near the power supply box. On my last MBP I had to replace the power adaptor 3+ times in its 5 year career. I was hoping this new one would be different somehow (I dont know why i would think that). It finally broke again, after just 5 months of use. Luckily it is covered in the applecare so I wont have to buy a new $80 power adaptor.

For those who wonder if it was my doing somehow, it was not. As I have dealt with this problem before I take steps to prevent it from happening again. carefully wrapping it up, not pulling on it and I have a hard case it sits in while it is my bag.

Also, as many others have complained the magnet is not powerful enough. I agree on this point as well. It could use a stronger magnet so it does not fall out as easily. I can see how this would add to more cable splits from the power supply box.

Unfortunately, I realize that if you are reading this you already have a macbook pro (most likely) so you really dont have a choice in the matter. The only advice I can give to you know is that if you computer is covered in the applecare warranty, so is your adaptor (as long as its the one that computer came with). If the cable splits, get a genius appointment and get it replaced.

Charges fine, magnet not sticky enough.

Charges fine, so I guess it does the job.

Doesn't overheat like my older one. So thats good.

Cable hasn't frayed at the connector, so I guess that's a plus.

I get why they made this thinner (nothing to do with the laptop being thinner....makes it harder to accidentally shove a usb stick in there) but:

    1) The L shape design was more convenient.
    2) Sit in a chair, move a little, and the thing falls off. Constantly. All. The. Time.

This is the first time I can remember where Apple got the actual usability so broken.

I've owned two dozen laptops over he years and I have never had a power adapter fail on me. Never. Until now. More humiliating than a shoddily made power supply is over paying $80 to replace it!! Sure, I love the 90 degree mag connector but who makes power supplies that just bleeps the blank out? Who does that?

Awkward; won't stay plugged into the laptop

I found this page because I was googling out of frustration with my Mac Air's charger cord. As others have noted, it falls out too easily when tilted up or down, which happens a lot when the laptop is ON YOUR LAP. Hello? I truly do expect design perfection from Apple, which makes it doubly frustrating to have such a serious flaw on this expensive laptop.

    The magnet is NOT GOOD

I didn't read all 8 pages of the back and forth arguing but this is my first Mac and I bought the 15 inch mac air to travel with it, use casually, sit on the couch and so far I can't do any of those things without the plug falling out every few minutes. If you have a cat, forget it, if they walk on the couch, it falls out. If I move, it falls out. I just would like to find a fix..... Any ideas?

    Another disappointed fan

    • Written by from London

I want to add my voice to the criticism here.
And no, not all the negative reviews are from one person :))

I think the person that reviewed the connector highly has no experience with the previous version of the Magsafe connector.
That connector was the best design so far, stayed in all the time, and only came out in case someone tripped on a cable. It had this "magnetic" feel to it, which was great, and it is completely lacking from the new version.

New Magsafe 2 connector constantly disconnects, simply by moving my Macbook around. It definitely does not belong to the otherwise general feel of sturdiness of the unibody Macbook Air.

Even though I am a big Apple fan, in recent years I have been very disappointed by their level of testing. I simply don't believe that the "innovations" like this go through any practical testing (such as simply using the Mac for a day !).
Otherwise surely someone would have spotted a glaring problem like this.

    A real missed opportunity ...

    Unplugs too easily.

It's a combination of a few engineering over sites. Not enough surface area for the magnet to hold firm and it extends out too far so even some of the weight from the cord itself has enough leverage to unplug it. I think going back to the "L" shape would solve the problem..

Also on a similar yet side note... I've always thought it would be incredibly convenient to have a charging connection on both sides of the MacBook. See what you guys can do, Apple :)

Bad Design - Disconnects too Frequently

    • Written by from Reno

Apple missed the ball on this one. :( Magsafe 2 disconnects far too easily. No problem if your laptop is on your desk - but put it on your lap and expect annoyingly frequent disconnects. The earlier sidebar-type Magsafe did not do this but Magsafe does and is IMHO a step backward in design

Not as nice as my 2007 Mac Book charger.

I used to be able to lift my old Mac Book off of the coffee table with no problems. If I tripped over the cord (it sure happens!), the cord would safely disconnect from the computer as it does now with my new retina model. The issue is when I lift my new Mac Book Pro Retina off of the coffee table, it is more likely than not that the new mag safe cable will disconnect and fall to the floor. I have been dealing with this issue since June 2012. I hope Apple can fix this inconvenience.

Need's better design & it's weak compared to Macbook Air.

Wish Apple would make the connection stronger. The magnetic connection is really weak compared to the one on my Macbook Air. It's constantly slipping off anytime the cord is bumped from top or bottom like when I'm using it on my lap sitting down. The L-style on the MacBook Air would be a much better fit and I prefer over this new connection. Also would be nice to have a cord that was a little longer. Overall two stars because I think this can be improved a lot!
