    Charger burning

    • Written by from halifax

I agree with everyone who has discussed the issue of our macbook pro charger burning itself. I noticed mine do this the other day when I saw that my charger wasn't charger my laptop. I played with the cord a bit to get a connection which I did, but then when I let go of it the wire would be bright and lots of smoke coming out. This happened in my dorm room at school so it has freaked me out now that it will happen with the new charger that I bought.

    Unsafe and Overheating!

    • Written by from ABERDEEN

Apple needs to take some major notes from Dell on how sturdy their chargers are, i've had 3 chargers since i got my Mac Book Pro, thankfully i have the apple protection plan and just get a new one without having to pay. That being said, on 3 occassions, the wires have come off and completely naked, and there's a burn stain from overheating, you can smell it. This is really unsafe! It's not about making the charger look cute, but really spend some time to design a quality charger that users can depend on...Really disappointing Apple!

    Terrible

    • Written by from New York

I had the computer for 2 weeks and the magnet was already not holding and it was constantly losing connection even when in the right position. The movement created just by typing would actually dislodge it just enough so you'd discover it wasn't charging. They sent me a new one and I can see I will soon have the same problem. The adaptor is too big, is easily tapped out of place, and worst of all does not sit flush in the port and has to be jostled to get a connection. The magnetic adapter for the MacBook Pro (non retina) was so great - never a problem, strong magnet, perfect size so not easily dislodged, and the cable ran parallel to the computer (not perpendicular like the new one) so less likely to break. Why they messed with such a perfect design, I do not know.

JUNK! Apple 85W Magsafe 2 Power Adapter for MacBook Pro with Retina = JUNK!

    • Written by from Salt Lake City

I've only had my VERY expensive MacBook Pro with Retina Display for about a year! The 85W power adapter has already burned out and now I see a new one is around $85 USD. This is such an incredible rip off! I've had PC laptops with very inexpensive power supplies that have lasted close to 10 years!!! This has made my estimation of Apple go completely downhill. The battery on my iPhone 5 is also JUNK since it has worn out quickly and they tell me at the Apple store it would cost $150 USD to replace it!!!! For a freaking BATTERY!!! I tried switching to Apple, but I'm going back to PC as soon as this laptop burns out. What a piece of JUNK! Apple should off to replace it for free since I've only had the computer for year! I'm very disappointed in your company.

    Ridiculous

    • Written by from London

Awful design, I agree with everything said - the magnetic plug keeps falling out and is complete rubbish, the charger gets quite hot as well, which is quite disturbing. Really hope Apple would do something about those problems as soon as possible, because this ridiculous, especially having in mind the price of the product!

    Absolutely Horrible Product

    • Written by from Dadar

    1) The charger is easily disconnected form the laptop. Even a small brush of the hand is enough to do it.
    2) The rubber coating of the wire is easily frayed and this compromises the whole charger. It will stop working.
    3) The body of the charger gets unbearably hot, and so does the charger pin.
    4) The charger will randomly stop working, even is nothing is wrong. You have plug-unplug it several times to get it working again.
    4) A replacement for this charger is equally ineffective, and also very expensive.

Have to agree with others-it's junk

    • Written by from Milton

A few months ago I noticed a nick in the cord insulation, near the magnetic connector. To protect it from getting worse I wrapped it with electrical tape. Today I noticed the electrical tape needed to be replaced as it had come loose. I took it off, and underneath, the insulation was completely shredded. I have no idea how this could have happened under the tape.

I also have the same criticism of the magnetic connector. I get you want it to come loose when tugged on...that's the whole idea, and it's a great one. But this connector is far weaker than the one with my old MacBook Pro. This connector practically comes loose when you look at it!

    Burned my office down

    • Written by

This charger caused a house fire, my home office desk made of wood caught fire in the middle of the middle of the night. My macbook pro was placed on my clean desk around 8:00pm and left to charge overnight as I can't bare to constantly reattach the weak magnetic connection between the charger and device. It was 2:30am when the smoke alarms awoke me and my family and as we scrambled to get everyone out of our home I noticed the smoke was coming from my office, I quickly grabbed the extinguisher and headed to the office, my desk was in flames, my chair melted and the wooden floor was charged, I quickly was able to put out the fire and open windows for ventilation. My daughters bedroom is next to my office and she is 2 years old. The apple charger was block that was plugged into the wall was completely melted and there was nothing left but dripping remnants of melted plastic, and I had suspected it was the charger from the beginning as the day prior it had blown my fuse to the office twice and it sparked and smoked but I figured apple would have designed a safety electrical current shut down but after insurance adjusters and the fire dept conducted an investigation it was clear from their conclusions the fire was cause by the plug.

I contacted apple and was told that they would have to images in which I supplied to a senior adviser and they referred me to an apple retail center to have the laptop evaluated. The retail store refused to replace, fix or even work on my MacBook Pro because AppleCare does not cover computers with foreign debris and since there was smoke damage my apple care was null and void. The senior tech I had submitted the images to said he was forwarding the info on to engineering department and once he received a response he would get back to me. I have yet to receive a response and it has been 47 days. I have left numerous voice messages with no response.

    CAUTION! CAUTION! CAUTION!
I was fortunate to have caught this fire in time but I stress DO NOT use the charger unless you are able to supervise the functioning 100% of the time. I will NEVER purchase anything from apple ever again. I'm disgusted with the quality, unprofessionalism and lack of integrity this company stands for.

    Garbage

    • Written by from Glasgow

This is bordering on seriously unsafe in my opinion. My second one has once again frayed at the exact same place as the first one did. I can only think that Apple are actually manufacturing this piece of garbage to fail in order that they can tax me £65 every 18 months or so. Is's mightily convenient that they seem to fail about 6 months after the warranty expires. Unsafe, poorly manufactured rubbish. I wanted to give it no stars but I can only give it one.

    Terrible and unacceptable

    • Written by from Green Bay

Wires started getting exposed and the adapter got so hot, you could smell something burning. I went to best buy (where I purchased my Mac) regarding this issue and they guy told me Apple would do nothing about it. This is absolutely unacceptable and NOT safe.

    broken and frayed connection

    • Written by from Toronto

The part where the cable connection meets with the adapter has frayed and severed. This is a new cable. I'm not happy with having to shell out another $100 on an adapter in order to use my computer.

    A waste of time

    • Written by from Orlando

What a waste of money, of my time and your time, Apple.

Stop wasting money, and cutting corners and actually make the macbook pro chargers durable, and worth the price.
Sorry, it's a critical thing to say, but if you want great ratings with returning and new customers that can recommend your product, then make your accessories better.
This seriously does not deserve a blue star. I wish I could give this 5 gray stars with this review.

I hope you make your accessories better.

    Keeps failing

We have dozens of these at my office. The failure rate is incredible. 1-in-3 power adapters have failed in less than a year. Coming from Apple, I'm very surprised at the poor quality.

    Weak...

    • Written by from Mahwah

The other reviews are correct. The magnet/connection to the MBP is far too weak and is unusable is any situation where the laptop will be moved during charging. How this passed QC in design is worrisome.

At least mine has yet to burn up.

I needed to purchase 2 more to have at multiple locations and I have no choice but to purchase a defective product because there is no alternative. After all these horror stories I guess I will have to wait.

Connector started sparking and melted the plastic

This adapter lacks quality, and is extremely expensive. The wire is frail, and the wall connector piece is susceptible to sparking and melting. It's a fire hazard.

    Weak Cable

The thickness of the cable is too thin, Just by having the cable on the floor and accidently catching it with my chair wheel split the insulation and is showing the metal wire. Not Good
