    Simple, clean and efficient...

The leather is smooth, soft, and compliments my white iPad beautifully. Af far as the case coming off and the magnets not staying, once you put it on, it clicks into place. This case cover meets my need. I wanted a cover that protects throughly while keeping the sleek look of the iPad without the heavy duty case and extra weight.

    Magnets faulty

I brought this case mostly because of the leather but when it arrived the magnets have failed to stay onto my iPad. I have dropped my iPad twice because of the magnet coming off in my hand. This is why I have given it 2 stars.

I have the tan leather Smart Cover on my iPad with retina display (4th generation).
It feels great to the touch. Makes my iPad a pleasure to pick up.
It gives a personal touch to a glass & metal mechanical device, due to the uniquely individual way in which leather ages and wears.
The more it wears, the more I appreciate it ... like a well-used leather jacket that your Dad left to you.
As others have said here, if you want your smart cover to remain flawless, unmarked, sanitized-looking, then get the man-made material version and get it in a darker color. You will spend less money for it and it will suit your style better. But if you're the type of person who can appreciate and value a well-used antique, leather-bound book, then this is the Smart Cover for you.

Beautiful Patina of Tan Leather Smart Cover

    • Written by from Bellevue

I have had this smart cover since April 2011. When I first purchased it, like many reviewers, I wasn't happy with others commenting it looked like cardboard.

In the year and half since then, the leather has aged beautifully. The patina of the leather is beautiful. It has that vintage, "used well and often" look. I wouldn't trade it for a different color. I have had people offer to buy it from me simply for the look of the patina. NFS ... it took time to get it looking this good :)

The magnets work just fine with my translucent soft back cover.

If you are picky about keeping things looking brand new, then this is not the cover for you.

If you like the feel and texture of items with a history and personality, then YES this is a great cover for you.

Found out the hard way what happens if you get a water spot on one of these. You would think that they would have coated it with some water repellant or something. Or at least advised you to do that.

I'm hoping that drying for a couple days will get rid of the worst of it.

    Tan Smart Cover

I bought the tan Smart Cover last February, when I got it I looked beautiful but everyone at school thought it was cardboard. Now it looks terrible, it kinda got darker and it has marks all over it. It's great in the beginning but later you'll want to burn it. Buy if you desire

    Looks like cardboard, and discolours

I like the function of the cover. Rolls up well, locks/unlocks well. But the Tan! I had several people comment "wow, that's a cool DIY cardboard cover!" I wish it was...but no that's the tan. Next, it gets dirty and looks horrible. Pick a dark colour.

I ordered this and the leather is very poor quality. In fact, it looks kind of dirty. I will return it for the poly cover. Save yourself the trouble and just get the poly cover in the first place.

    Smart and Nifty Design

I like the simplicity of the smart cover, it covers the basics such as putting the iPad to sleep and propping the iPad up in 2 different positions. I prefer the fact that it only protects the screen and doesn't add bulk to the already thin iPad, other full-body cases make the iPad feel thick. I've been using it for 3 weeks now and have no complaints so far about its practicality. Just be careful when you're carrying it around so that you don't drop it, I'd get an iPad sleeve to slip it in. My only gripe is the price tag.

    Worthless!!!

    1. Absolutely NO protection! Only covers the glass. I've got a dent in the corner of my brand new iPad that wouldn't be there if it had been in a proper case. And the IPad is subject to scratches on the back, as well as corner dents.
    2. Cheap-looking pressed leather. Not only looks cheap, but stains easily and it can't be cleaned.
    3. Pulls off the iPad easily, as the magnet isn't the greatest. And the magnet leaves permanent marks on the back of the iPad.

So, what's the point? And to top it off, it's overpriced....70 bucks for nothing!

    Love how it feels!

I love my leather smart cover combined with a non-Apple clear plastic cover for the back because it keeps the smart cover magnets from moving or dislocating. The leather feels very nice and stylish and goes well with my tan messenger bag.

I didn't like the blue smart case I initially bought, although it offers more protection, it takes away from the design and makes it bulky.

Nice quality - careful if choosing the lighter colours

I have the tan leather one which looks and feels lovely. However, as mentioned in another review, it does mark very easily. I'd suggest covering it in one of the leather shoe protector sprays from day 1 so any water/oily/dirty marks don't show up as easily. Basically, go for the darker ones if you're anything less than super careful with your stuff.

    Fantastic but expensive

The tan leather is by far the best looking cover I have seen. When used with a clear frosted snap on cover for the back, it provides great protection for the new iPad and the look is fantastic. It reminds me of a Leica camera with the tan leather and aluminum.

I read some of the complaints about the magnets not holding the iPad however I do not believe the iPad was meant to be picked up by the cover by itself with the expectation of the magnet holding the iPad in the air. However I do believe the cover does in fact do its job of protecting the screen from the elements.

This cover gets 4 stars. I would have given it 5 but the price is a little too high.

Not very good value for money. Does not stay in place very well, it's always just falling off. Went back to my old leather case, at least that stayed put.

I bought the tan leather cover for my iPad, which for what it is, is not particularly cheap. Like other reviewers here, I have found that its impossible to look after, and stains really easily, with no way of removing the stains. As another reviewer here said 'it looks like the inside if a pizza box'.

I really wish I'd saved my money, go for the cheaper option, it will last better!

The first product I have torn up and thrown in the rubbish. Leather is meant to look professional, this item stained and looked filthy after every touch; I know it comes with a warning, but come on... I even washed my hands before holding this item!

    accident waiting to happen

It's a work of art, but not for anyone who really uses it other than to show off cuz the magnet strength just isn't enough. I've been v. careful knowing full well how "delicate" this gadget is, but that was not enough to prevent the iPad from causing massive dents in my designer coffee table and lacquered wooden floor when it "slipped out".
Also, the back is completely bare and laid open for scratching.
I would definitely not recommend - desirable but so unreliable!
