I've only had it for maybe 4 or 5 months and the thing gets incredibly hot, and now the spot where the cord that connects to the actual battery split completely open and now there are open wires frayed out....which are sparking....so im afraid to touch it.

    Terrible value

    • Written by from Twickenham

Having just had to buy my third adapter in three and a half years, I can only agree with the majority of the other reviews on here. After the first one went, I was extremely careful with the second one, but if anything it died even more quickly. How can Apple continue to produce such a poor product AND charge such an extortionate price for it?

    Doesn't last

    • Written by from Sierra Vista

Apple needs to improve the quality of these power adapters. I coddled this adapter: Never wrapped the cord tightly, kept strain off the cord, and made sure to only put it in my bag on days I would need it. Yet the cord is already frayed and falling apart. I don't mind paying a high price for a good product but having to replace an $80 power adapter after 18 months of fairly moderate use is unacceptable.

Serious design fault - cable to computer breaks

    • Written by from Bristol

Just about to order a third replacement as you can't get them from anywhere else!

The thin wire from the adapter to the computer wears and breaks as it leaves the protective collar (which is too stiff to protect the wire and, I suspect, actually just serves to sever it more quickly).

For a company that designs such beautiful computers, this is very disappointing.

    Killed My Battery

    • Written by from Denver

This power cord frayed by the charger head after about a year of use, for absolutely no reason. The cord was not mistreated in any way. Before I was able to replace the cord, a few months, my Service Battery warning came on. My (Macbook Air 2011) battery life declined steadily from there. The battery was then "Replace Soon", even though I had switched chargers, and I needed to replace the $180 battery. This charger is horrible, it ruined itself and my battery. The fact that Apple hasn't addressed these issues is appalling. I'm switching to Windows and Android.

    Horrible, falls out constantly

    • Written by from San Jose

The charger itself works fine if its sitting quietly at your desk hooked to a dock. But take it on the road and at every little bend of the wire too close to the plug and the thing falls out. I can hardly hold it in my lap for accidentally bumping the stupid connector and off it comes.

    Hate this product.

The MacBook chargers are NOT WORTHY of the Apple name.

    • Written by from Mountain View

I am a loyal Apple user and 99% of Apple's products are designed beautifully, which is why it is mind-blowing why Apple has not fixed the poor design on their MacBook Air power charger. I will summarize the big three items:

1). It is too big at the end unless you want to lug around the extension cord everywhere you go. It is so big it takes up two spaces on the power strip. You bought an air for a reason - so it is light. get a clue product manager who runs this product line!

2). It breaks due to bad design. The whole wrap around the brick design puts too much pressure and wear and tear on the cable at the end of the brick which over time breaks the wire off. This is really expensive to replace at $80 a pop. Please please fix this!!!

3). No short three pronged option. Again, have to use a two pronged version unless you want to lug around the ginormous extension cable.

Please forward this to the PM running this product line. You have a one star rating on your own website - is anyone listening to your customers?

Third Replacement of 45W MagSafe Power Adapter

    • Written by from LOVELAND

I've just purchased my third adapter. I take good care of the cord but it just stops working after a year or so. There are no visible signs of wear and no kinks in the cord. This is a serious issue since there's no other way to charge the MacBook. I expect reliability from my Apple products as I rely on them for work and the adapter is the only item with which I've ever had a chronic problem.

If I wadded up the cord or otherwise abused it, I could understand but I've always been very careful with it. If there is a secret to extending the longevity of the adapter's lifespan I'd love to know it.

    Don't. Buy. This.

    • Written by from Clemmons

I've had my MacBook for 2 years. And everything has been fine EXCEPT the charger. The charger is complete trash. The rubber deteriorates. The wires fray. It stops working so quickly.
I've worked to take good care of the charger-- hardly ever taken my charger out of my home. AND IT STILL BREAKS SO QUICKLY.
This charger is worth nothing, CERTAINLY not the $80 they charge for it.
Apple needs to fix this NOW. I wish I could give this negative stars.

Take care of it, and it will be fine

    • Written by from Highgate center

Ive had my i7 Air for a year this month, i have my original and spare 45W I bought as a travel one. Both are still in 100 percent mint condition. No cracks, or frays, and still go strong. The magnetic plug can fall out when i turn quick, or sit in bed, but i simply just plug it back in... and its good to go... people that complain about this product obviously shove it into a bag, or wrap it up tight onto something or in a ball. just keep a 3 inch loop in the cord when winding, and don't yank it out of the wall or computer. You can only blame yourself if yours is falling apart. your doing something wrong

Died After 14 months of use

    • Written by from Los Angeles

So the adapter for my Macbook Air has died after just 14 months of use. Judging from the reviews, this seems to be a normal occurrence.
Now, I just spent 80+ dollars on a brand new adapter. I hope I can get at least 2 years out of this one. If by some miracle, I do get 2 years use, it still means this thing cost me 40 bucks a year to use.

For a company that prides itself on the customer "experience", this sure is leaving a bad taste in my mouth. In recent months, I've already migrated to Windows Phone and a Windows tablet. Perhaps, I should just go all the way and just get a PC laptop next. All this coming from an ex-Apple employee too. Talk about being a detractor!

    Me Too!!

    • Written by from Glendale

I've also had problems with the Air power cord. It has worked continuously for 4 years, but the covering on the cord started fraying almost immediately. I figured I must have pinched it or something and put some electrical tape on it. Then over time, it kept disintegrating and I'd add more tape. Finally it got so that about 1/3 of the cord was covered in electrical tape. I took it in today and they, while being polite, seemed to think that I had abused it or my dog had chewed on it. Neither is the case - it is just cheap, thin material. They gave me a new one for "only" $61, their cost. Lucky me! Needless to say I'm not happy with Apple. I've never had any other cord covering simply disintegrate!

    Expensive price but cheap quality

    • Written by from New York

I am on this website to order my third power adapter for my MacBook Air (purchased at the end of 2011). In my experience, an adapter (for $80) lasts a little over a year and then stops functioning. When I went to the Apple Store that last time an adapter failed, I was told that the warranty had expired and I would have to buy a new one.

For my PC laptop, I bought at $20 adapter to have a backup, and both have worked seamlessly for over four years. No excuse.

    Dies way too quickly

    • Written by from MELBOURNE

I love my Macbook Air 11" (2011). It's been a little over 2 years and it's still going strong. I wish I could say the same for the power adaptors. None of my power adaptors have lasted over a year. My second power adaptor has just failed me after becoming ridiculously frayed, and I'm on the Apple store website to begrudgingly buy my third.
My family have laptops from other brands older than my Macbook Air that get frequently used and not a single one of their power adaptors have needed replacing in the 4 or 5 years that they've been in my family, being used on a daily basis.
Now, my Macbook Air is far from ready to be trashed so I'll replace the adaptor, but $99 for a notoriously low quality product that I will inevitably have to pay for again next year? Talk about a scam.
It's both consoling and disheartening to see that there are already hundreds of negative reviews on this product and I'm not just an unlucky one-off.

    Poor quallity

    • Written by from Leeds

Before I went on this page and read other reviews, I honestly thought something was wrong with me! Had my adapter for just 2 years and the cord broke near to where the connector to laptop is. I've fixed it with a cable tape but a month or two later it broke in a different place, just below the old one. Poor quality and a ridiculous price for a replacement!
