2 Batteries From Apple, 1 From Third Party: Expensive=Better, Unfortunately

    • Written by from Solomons

Bought our black MacBook in 2006. It gets heavy daily use, and has been upgraded with an SSD and more memory. The original battery lasted for several years, and recorded around 1,000 charge cycles before getting so bad (<2hrs) that I replaced it with a new Apple battery at the ruinous $130 price. The replacement battery lasted several more years, and well over 1,000 cycles, before needing replacement again - so far, so good. You can't complain about that kind of life, even if you don't like the price.

But that time, I thought, "Whew, I won't pay that big price again!" I found a 3rd party battery from OWC that promised better life than stock and cost a lot less - I think $80 or $90. So I smiled and got that. That was less than two years ago, only a few hundred charge cycles, and already the life is deteriorating. It's down to about 2 1/2hrs. At this rate, it will need to be replaced within the next 6 months or so. Was the cheaper price worth it? I'm thinking not. When I replace, it will be with an Apple battery in spite of the price.

Irritating - I know that by comparison, I'm "getting what I'm paying for". But does it have to cost so much? Anyway, be advised - in spite of the steep price, the stock Apple battery may be the best solution for your Macbook.

    Macbook battery black

    • Written by from LEIGHTON BUZZARD

My battery is 7 years old and has now eventually stopped working. I was told it should last 300 hours in the apple store and at the time was near to 1200 hours. I decided to leave it until it stopped completely, which it now has. I must be near to 1500 hours by now. Quite impressive.

Original Battery Finally Has a Replace Message

    • Written by from Orange

I think I got this wonderful MacBook computer in 2008, and I have been using this on the original battery ever since then. Only now do I have a replace battery message. I have mainly used my battery connected to the charger and quite a number of peripherals like a desktop computer except it is portable. I do hope this computer needs the battery I see available. Fortunately mine was the computer right before the aluminum ones when you could still get a MacBook with the oldstyle FireWire (new ones only need a cable). When I think about it, since it is 2013, I have gotten almost 5 years out of this original battery which is good service. Hope I can stop by the Apple Store and buy a new one tomorrow. $129.00 is a lot, but I guess after 5 years that is good service. I have not taken this on the road with me any so far and have not really tried using it on battery only. Anyway, this has been an ideal computer for me. I did upgrade to System X.6.8 and find this system ideal. I sure hope the other components of this computer will keep on working to make it worth buying a new battery. I really would have bought a 2nd battery long ago if I had traveled with it. I hate to change to a later model because certain programs I use probably won't work with System X.8 like the invoicing program. I hope newer MacBooks are there that have user replaceable batteries like this one, though this will be a first for me. I simply can't complain and have to give this 5 stars because of the battery lasting so long.

    • Written by from Newport beach

I have 1520 cycles & 5+ years on my original battery, and it's now failing. I've considered replacing with another brand, but at less than 9 cents per day why mess with it? It'll be nice to get 3.5+ hours on a charge again

    1018 cycles

    • Written by from Bend

I've had my macbook since 2008. The mac just started shutting down on it's own even when it was plugged into the power source. I called the apple store, even though it was out of warranty the guy still talked me through how to find out how many cycles it has been charged. It showed 1018 cycles-which it should really only get 500 cycles. I don't know...I think this is proof enough that these batteries/ computers are amazing. I would always unplug it when it's completely charged, I think that is what prolonged the life of the battery for the past 5 years...

    Very Good!

    • Written by from BLACK CREEK

I have had the original battery in my Macbook. Ever since late 2007. And just recently it flashed saying that I will need to replace my battery soon! I'm very impressed with how well this battery lasted, and how well the computer itself is holding up!

    Battery is Useless

    • Written by from Portugal Cove St. Philips

Original battery gave out in less then 1 yr. After reading the reviews here I will not be buying the replacement. It seems to be a gamble to buy an apple battery.

    Poor battery

    • Written by from Jacksonville Beach

I took care to perform the correct maintenance on my Apple battery. Unfortunately, it has disable my mouse due to swelling within the battery compartment itself. Something is not right with a design that allows the internal batteries to swell and create other issues for the laptop. Watch out folks that your battery does not show signs on swelling!

    A Beast!

    • Written by from Buffalo

The battery is a beast, i've had it in my macbook for 5 years and only now it's holding about an hour and a half charge, and i abused the battery (constant charging, battery drain, improper charge cycles). Holds up as a great product as well as so many other Apple products.

    Apple Macbook Battery

    • Written by from Whitstable

I guess these batteries are now supplied by different manufacturers who have different ideas about performance and longevity. My 2008 Macbook with its OEM battery now lasts for about 1.5 hours, it shows a charge cycle of just 274 and tells me to service the battery. So, and I bought a new battery from Apple about 14 months ago, it now last for about 3 hours and shows a cycle count of 36. This battery isnt going to last much longer.
Compare that to my Daughters Macbook from 2007. The battery lasts over 6 hours and shows a cycle count of 1093, condition normal.

    Doesnt add up does it?

    Should I buy a third one ?

    • Written by from Amsterdam

I bought a second battery as my original one was starting to become less efficient at holding a charge. Now after only a year or two this second one has given up the ghost. It holds about 30 minutes of charge, tops.

My original battery that I stored according to instructions does not even charge anynore.
At the price of this battery pack and its durability I´ll be looking somewhere else.

I know rechargeable batteries do not live forever, but these ones wear down _way_ to fast.
I also work on a Lenovo T400 and that battery is still doing more or less OK after 4 years of daily 8+ hour use.

The Mackbook is a lovely machine, unfortunately its batery pack does not do it justice.

2008 original battery showing end of life

    • Written by from newport beach

I purchased this macbook in 2008 and still have the original battery - now 1316 cycles
After reading the reviews on this site, I may consider replacing with an aftermarket battery. Apple got the original battery right (4+ years & 1300+ cycles), but I'm not so sure about the Apple replacement product after reading the recommendations when it becomes necessary.

    81 eighty one? EIGHTY ONE!

    • Written by from Glasgow

After 81 charge cycles I had one of these replacements die on me. More than £1/per charge cycle.

The original lasted, from release day, to autumn 2011. The replacement barely made it to the following summer...

    Horrible quality

    • Written by from Huntsville

I purchased this battery a little over 6 months ago, it now holds a charge for at best 1 hour. I have done everything I was suppose to as far as calibration, but the quality of this replacement battery is extremely substandard for Apple. The battery also runs extremely hot, so beware if your one who likes to sit with your computer directly on your lap.

    2nd baterry suddently died today

    • Written by from Red Deer

Last year after almost 4 glorious years, I had to replace the battery for my black MacBook.

Yesterday it was working fine and now it doesn't hold the charge anymore. Bad, since I can honestly say that this computer has been the best purchase in years and I do a lot or work on it.

Don't know if I'd be willing to buy a new one without a guarantee that it will last at least what the first one lasted. I wish someone from Apple could help today because when I called last year, they could not.

    2nd Battery just died

    • Written by from San Jose

I've had my MacBook Black for 5 years, and my 2nd battery had just bulged out. I bought the 2nd battery less than 2 years ago. I can't belive an Apple product is so inferiorly made that it only lasts on an average of 2 1/2 years. I was going to get a new MacBook, but I'm seriously reconsidering it.
