i seem to be one of many people who went on holiday, without my mac for a change, to come back to a dead laptop!!
to say I am highly unamused is a huge understatement!
Worse still i have to spend so much money to replace it!
Surely apple could do something about this, at the very least some advice!

    Defeats purpose of a Labtop

I love my macbook, but the battery only lasted me for 2 years. And with such an expensive computer I expected more. The battery only lasted a couple hours unplugged, which defeats the purpose of having a lab top, A.K.A. portable computer. I'm very disappointed in apple.

Because my harddrive broke on my macbook after 2 years of use, my 2(!) batteries stood unused for 3 weeks. BOTH of them died! Now I just get "Not charging" and "Replace battery" -warnings. Before the HD broke they worked fine for almost 2h without problems. This is the first time I had to throw fully functional batteries away, apparently because of some hardware or software system bug. And the guy from Apple just told me "sorry -they're out of warranty". So another 140€ down the drain... Weak, Apple, Weak.

I've had my Macbook for 35 months and have not once had to change the battery. It is at 89% health and can last a solid 2 hours from full charge. I am currently speaking to you while it is on its 1879th charge.

This said, my lifestyles involves the continuous draining of my battery, from 100 to 0, at least twice a day. Due to the way laptop batteries work this did more good than bad to my battery.

However, I am fully aware that this is an intensive-use result of the battery, and does not apply to the majority of people using this product. This is why the product gets 3 stars instead of any higher, as when I used to have a less laptop-intensive lifestyle, the battery life was downright pitiful (full charge would last about 70 minutes)

All I can do is suggest to let batteries run from full charge straight to 0, even let it fall asleep for a bit, before plugging it into the mains. This has definitely kept my battery's life expectancy high, especially as I was supposed to have a dead battery 1000 cycles ago. The numbers don't lie, I just hope I'm not the exception to the rule.

I got my notebook two years ago. Warranty expired. I have encountered the battery expanding problem recently.

The customer support told me i need to pay for new battery.

I have fujitsu notebook with me and it's older than my macbook. The usage is about the same. The battery doesn't expanding at all. Expanding might lead to possible explosion. And now i have to pay for it.

    Terrible

Before I start this review, let me say that I love my MacBook, it's been great and runs pretty good.

I've had it for about two years, right before I started college. Last week my light on my charger wasn't fully orange and was flickering. I find it isn't charging. I setup an appointment with Apple and go to talk to them today. After waiting 30 minutes after 4:20 for an appointment that was for 4:20 I get to the guy. He does a few things, presses some buttons and now it is suddenly charging again. However he says I need a new battery.

Not sure how he got it to charge again but apparently the lithium batteries only last about two years. It's 130 bucks to replace it via apple. I didn't think these batteries went out like that, I thought I was going to be good for at least 4-5 years.

In short, be careful, because these batteries have a terrible life. And it says I've used 190 cycles...which from what i'm reading is pretty minimal, that's just messed up.

2 batteries failed, woeful Apple response

I bought 2 MacBooks for my 2 kids (stops any fighting over homework etc).. We went on hols and when we came back, BOTH batteries refused to be recharged. On screen message on both said that the batteries were not recognised.
Apple store support said as they were past 300 cylces (one was 301) this was to be expected and that was it.. I am deeply suspicious of both batteries failing at EXACTLY the same time.. and not happy and having to spend £198 for replacements..

Owned my macbook for less than two years...only 270 cycles and it died overnight. Customer support politely told me this what I should expect. To me it does sound like a hardware fault and £100 to replace it is steep.

Im having to buy a new battery for my macbook after only two years of use. I have owned many different brands of laptops and this is the first time i have ever had to replace a battery. It seems this a common problem, and one which will cost me £100 pound every two years. After paying nearly £900 for a laptop i didn't expect to get stitched up again.

    Sneak Attack...of FAILURE

I am just beginning my junior year of college and purchased my 13" macbook just before my freshman year so I have owned this computer a little less than two years. I follow the instructions concerning fully charging/depleting the battery and just last week my battery held a full 2.5-3 hour charge. Now, after letting my battery run itself out last night it is in a complete state of uselessness.

The alert next to my battery says "(Not Charging)" "Replace Battery Now" and I can run off of nothing but wall power. As a student I cannot take my laptop to classes or use it in a professional setting without a charger (for which there is not always an outlet).

This warning is not so much for the battery as the Macbook itself. Because while I don't like what has happened, we cannot help purchasing another of these batteries because that is what's compatible with our laptops.

However, any purchasing an already expensive Macbook be cautioned! You will have to replace the battery...SOON! Great while it lasts...which isn't very long.

45 months and going pretty strong

I use a late '06 MacBook, keep it plugged in most of the time, seldom run it down to the warning level. 664 cycles, battery is at 76% of original capacity. That last is my only semi-complaint. I think when it's time for a new battery, I'll get a new MacBook instead.

    Needed replacing after 232 cycles

I've had my macbook for just about 2 years now and the battery only had 232 cycles on it before it died. When I went to talk to the geniuses, the first thing they said was that I had a faulty battery and it needed to be replaced. Because I didn't get apple care, I had to buy a new one. They told me that batteries typically have way more charges before they die, and I just had bad luck.

the 4th one i'm going to, sadly, have to replace

this battery dies after about 400 uses. for a laptop it is just unacceptable. when the first generation of macbook 13 white came out in 2005-2006, the first batch of these laptops all had manufacture defects. my 1st battery died after about half a year. then the second after a year, third after the third year, and now i'm going to get the fourth one.

maybe it has to do with the fact that i travel among different countries a lot and the input power is fluctuating between 110V and 220V? maybe it's just not a good laptop battery overall.

I bought my Macbook in Nov 07. Still running the original battery with cycle count at 662. It ran for 3.5 hrs before needing recharging this morning. The only time I plug my computer in is to recharge. No complaints here.

    Completely dead after 400 cycles

The original battery that came with my Macbook died after about a year and a half-- it was replaced free of charge due to a defect (an 'x' on the battery indicator). Now my replacement battery is dead (again after a year and a half) with less cycles than the original.
I've had batteries slowly die and hold less charge as time goes on, but to have it completely die out of the blue is pretty awful.

    long life

I have had my MacBook for 3 years now and the battery is still going strong and holding a long life. The only problem I am having is the covering for the battery is starting to separate from the battery. It looks like the battery is being pulled down and out but after removing the battery and inspecting it I have come to the conclusion that it's just peeling apart. I build and repair PC's (dell, gateway, compaq, etc) and I will stand by APPLE 100% on their computers. I have been using an Apple computer since the Apple II (including the Apple IIe, IIc, and IIGS) and never had a problem. I am looking to pick up another battery for my MacBook just to have as a backup.

    2nd time was the charm

My 2nd battery is on 762 cycles and I bought it 2 years ago. It still says the condition is good. The difference this time is that I charge the battery to 100%, and then immediately disconnect from the power source. While I use it through the day, once it gets down to the warning that it will power down at 5%, then I plug it back in. Seems to work for me! The first time I would leave it plugged in all the time, because a tech guy I worked with said that is was fine to do that. He was obviously wrong. Giving it 4 stars because the battery is still too expensive for my liking.

I have had the 13" black macbook for a couple of years and the battery has lasted fine on it, then I got married and went on my honeymoon for two weeks in maui leaving my laptop at home, and not using it, when I got home from the honeymoon the battery had fallen into a deep state of discharge, after much research on this issue, I am now very hesitant in purchasing a $130 replacement not knowing how long that replacement will last for it's very tenuous, dubious in fact.
