a fine product thats gives excellent deep yet warm sound .
however setup was a mess took me hours and plus airplay was patchy. after returning it to the B&W service center they informed me that i needed a firmware update and needed to change my wifi password settings to WLAN2/psk TKIP.
i have played songs on it for 6 hours at a stretch and there was no hassle.
it gives distortion free sounds even at full volume(which can wake up several of your neighbors)

Four Stars only because perfection invites the contrarians to argue

A pure audiophile I'm not and those who are might talk techy stuff I don't get; but as an average Joe who has spent thousands in the 1980's and 90's on supposedly "top shelf" audio systems, the B&W Zeppelin Air is mighty impressive. I have a Bose Soundek for my original 5th gen iPod, and it's not bad. When I compare the Zep to the Bose, there is no comparison. With astounding range from lows to highs, it's hard to believe this little package delivers so much solid, crisp sound. Wireless setup with my existing network over my Airport Extreme was a snap that took only minutes. All my devices, including my iMac, Mac Air, iPad, iPhone and iTouch control the Zep beautifully from the original one-time setup. I would highly recommend this product.

It's been 3 Months and it's been a pleasure to use. No issues and Air Play works so well. I held out on my review to be sure I get past the Honeymoon period and that same feeling of pure satisfaction is still here. Don't hesitate if you're on the fence!

I was very unsure about what to expect after reading other reviews. The set up was very easy and relatively fast. I have used AirPlay for numerous episodes of Suits as well as streaming songs, YouTube videos and other apps. The connection has never been interrupted and I have never had to reconnect it to the network. All of my skepticism has been erased and I am truly enamoured with these speakers. The sound quality is phenominal and the design is absolutely beautiful. Buy them! They're worth it!

WiFi setup is a pain in the behind. Apparently you are "not allowed" to have any "special characters" like an ampersand, in your wireless name, or password. Why B&W think they can dictate my network settings is beyond me, even my 50 quid IP camera can handle an ampersand. Now you know, but I wasted 2 days finding this out. Hope it helps someone else.

    Serious issues with Air Play

This device has a great sound WHEN WIRED. I had it replaced because the streaming (Air Play) is simply a disaster (cuts out or drops the sound after a couple of seconds and just stalls). The replacement unit is even worse than the one I originally purchased.

I alternatively use my Apple TV and have NO SOUND BREAK OUT ISSUE, whether I'm streaming from my MBP, iPhone 4, IPad 1 or 2..

I believe the network module in the Zepp Air needs to be thoroughly looked into.

    Zeppelin VS Zeppelin Air

Being an owner of the original zeppelin, I had a hard time believing how much better the zeppelin Air could sound. After purchasing the new Air play version, I immediately put the new one to the test. Right out of the box I would say that the initial sound did not seem to be better considering all the internal upgrades. I have to say I was considering taking it back. The fact that it was brand new I decided to give it a chance to break in.
After three weeks of continuous play, I performed one more side by side comparison with the original zeppelin. I have to say that the Air version really outperforms the original in the following areas:

    -Wider sound stage
-Vocals have more body and sounds more palpable
-Even in airplay mode the new zeppelin out performs the original

There was one thing that I found interesting though. the new Air version is considerably lighter than the old version. With all the upgrades I can't imagine why.

I must say that this is the sweetest sounding set I have bought. It was super easy to set up and the sound fills my town home. I have already told friends about it and bought one as a gift for my brother.

    B&W great job!

Great sound, Airplay a little wonky

    • Written by from Salt Lake City

I purchased this unit about 9 months ago and have been using it extensively.

The sound is terrific given its limitations with respect to size Certainly, it sounds better than the competition from Bose and Bang & Olufsen. However, as with all smaller speaker systems, on types of music that have a big soundstage or great complexity, it seems to me that the Zeppelin "works" really hard and the music starts to sound a little strained. This is more a limitation of size than a fault with the Zeppelin.

A few caveats: first, the dock for the iPod/iPhone is VERY delicate. It breaks VERY easily and should be treated accordingly. Second, you must follow the directions for Airplay meticulously because if you do not, it may not work properly. This is easily remedied by performing a Reset of the Zeppelin. Remember NOT to plug in the power cable before plugging in the Ethernet cable; Ethernet cable first! Finally, if you are using the device via Airplay, make sure that you disconnect the Airplay connection via iTunes before you try to switch to the iPod dock, otherwise it glitches and won't let you play via the dock.

    Paragraph 1, why I bought it. Paragraph 2, why it's 5 stars!

To treat myself last week I bought the Zeppelin Air from Bowers & Wilkins, a top of the line iPod dock. As a student I move around far too often to justify the cumbersome overhead associated with the conventional Amp & Speakers arrangement. (An efficient student is one who has streamlined their worldly possessions to a single car-full!) That, and my paranoia towards in-ear personal music as the leading cause of deafness at any early age, I believe I can justify the need for such a sophisticated piece of tech. (At least justify it enough so I can sleep at night without worrying about the price tag)

After keeping for company the Zeppelin Air for nearly a week I have never felt more connected with my music. The quality of the sound is incredibly rich and satisfying across all genres. The integration with iTunes for wireless streaming is a properly cool feature. The free-standing dock for all Apple iDevices makes it the only missing link to a holistic personal music solution. Perhaps it is still the honeymoon from an expensive new purchase that has me talking like this but I honestly believe the Zeppelin Air to be the second best piece of technology I have ever owned.

Zeppelin Air really is the best

Okay, I am not a fan of any particular company. I always go with quality regardless of the company behind it.

I have been doing research for a good dock for past six months. Finally, put 4 docks (I don't want to name names as I feel its not appropriate but they are considered to be the best docks in any reviews) in a very tight scrutiny, almost in the war zone in my totally noise proof room. The detail in sound I have never heard before from any other dock.

The best thing about Zeppelin Air is that it sounds best amongst all other docks exist to-date, and above all, its AirPlay feature rocks. Oh my... what a convenience. I only docked my iPhone/iPod once to check, it works ok.

I did not experience any trouble in setting up wireless Airplay. I just can't be happier. I wish if I could buy more for each room. It is that good.

All I would say that it is a great addition in my audio arsenal. Very happy with it. It worth every single penny. I would highly recommend to anyone who REALLY wants the best possible sound from docking speakers.... and its beautiful as well.

Zeppelin Air was my first B&W purchase and I am now looking forward to buy more B&W products, especially their 800 speakers series.

    Absolutely Flawless

This speaker/docking system is the best on the market for it's intended use. It does not replace a larger system for large rooms, but for home or small room use - you simply cannot purchase a better unit. I would recommend multiple units to effectively fill larger rooms, which B&W supports with their software enhancements to sync multiple units together.

The outages that other people complain about has nothing to do with the B&W unit, but rather their WiFi systems. People using multi-channel WiFi will not experience sound interference. Alternatively, one can dock their unit onto the unit, which by=passes the WiFi airplay, and plays directly to the system.

Sound is clear and bass is smooth and punchy.

    Flashing red

I've had the Zeppelin Air for a week and initially only used it for the playback of music from my I-pod. It worked flawlessly until last night when I attempted to connect it to my network. Despite many attempts it would not establish a wireless connection. A friend who is an IT consultant also helped, but we could not resolve the issue. In addition, the Zeppelin Air would no longer work properly with my I-Pod. After 5 minutes of playing music it would stop and display the flashing red light. Today I decided give it one more try before I returned the unit. I followed exactly the same sequence as before, but this time added a number to my password. The Zeppelin connected to my network instantly and the playback problem with the I-Pod also disappeared. I will test it for the next few days, but so far so good. Four stars because apart from the problem of connection I would agree with the positive reviews about the Zeppelin Air.

    Best compact system

I've been owning the Zeppelin Air for 3 months now and beside a 15 min setup, it's been working flawlesly. Best compact audio system I ever owned. It's currently hooked up to the tv so it can act as tv speakers when I use it. Most of the time, my iPhone 4 stream radio/podcast music to it.
Great sounds, versatile, a must buy if you're into air play.

Form and function but not without flaws

    • Written by from Centurion

Firstly, this thing is built like a tank and weighs a lot more than its size would suggest.
It sounds as good as it looks and if you had to do a blindfold test you'd never believe that such a big sound could come from such a relatively small package. Sound stage is not great which is understandable with the speakers so close together but I don't think it was intended to replace your living room hifi. It's meant to fill a small room with big sound and it does that brilliantly.

It's not all good news though, updating the firmware and setting up Airplay is a real pain. There is an app from B&W in the AppStore but simply connecting to the unit's wifi hotspot and going to its IP seems to be much easier. That being said, make sure your wifi router's security settings are set up properly else the Zeppelin will not be able to connect, even if it accepts your WiFi password.

Also, the unit doesn't control it's own volume, even though it's got vol up/down buttons, what happens is that it controls your iPhone/iPod/Mac/etc's volume. This means that when you dock your phone the first time it could start playing music at full blast!! I found this out the hard way and I feel it's a serious design flaw that should be looked at and fixed ASAP. You could seriously injure your ears.

Other than those 2 issues which cost it a star, it's a superb device and I'd highly recommend it, just remember you've been warned - don't blow your ears...

Serious Networking Issues. Not AirPlay related

    • Written by from KENMORE

Love the sound of this thing but the networking stack they implemented stinks.
The device is constantly dropping off of my wireless network even though the indicator light remains solid purple which means it's connected and in AirPlay mode. Check of wireless clients through Airport Utility shows that sure enough the Zeppelin is not connected to the wireless network. I have had this happen during the middle of playback, like others. But I have also had this happen after pressing the standby button on the unit to wake it up with zero AirPlay connection attempts. The only way to correct this is to power cycle the unit. Really? And yes the firmware is at the latest version. And I'm still waiting to hear back from B&W's tech support.

Honestly I'm ready to just dump this thing and go with an Airport Express and speakers. My sister's family has had zero issues with this setup.

If you are seriously considering dropping this much cash, I would think twice.

airplay with iphone 4s is spotty at best

    • Written by from Chicago

i love the way these speakers sound. they truly give you a new perspective to how your music sounds, even better than you thought! my problem lies with the airplay and it doesn't work. while other reviews have said it drops after 30 seconds, i've had luck where it doesn't drop for 30 minutes or less. it's extremely frustrating to pay $650 for something that should work. apple shouldn't sponsor 3rd parties if they don't work with upgrades...or apple should work with third parties about how their upgrades change things. this is my second set of speakers and my phone still doesn't dock to play music. have to play by airplay and that doesn't work either. iphone 4s and itunes 10 have created a series of problems for this technology. i've worked with b&w on this but their fixes don't solve the problem either. if you are considering, possibly wait for the airplay bugs to be fixed.

This speaker has an amazing sound, the bass is incredible and the the music is balanced even at loud volume, the speaker not only looks great but the performance is also excellent; the airplay function is a little hard to configure but once you got it right the freedom it offers is unparalleled, since you don't have your phone on the dock at all times and goes with you around the house instead.

bottom line one of the best loud speakers, great design and the innovative airplay function.

    Audiophile Quality

I love this speaker. As others have mentioned, figuring out how to set it up via the wireless method was a small challenge. I actually used my iPod touch to connect it to my network. The first few attempts using my MacBook Air were unsuccessful. Setting it up using my Touch was a breeze; there is a section on setting it up using the iPod in the manual. I consider myself to be an audiophile as I have own many high-end systems in the past. This little speaker blew away my current system, and sound on par with systems costing twice or even three times as much. The ability to buy more than one to create a whole house system is unbelievable. I will take this speaker system over the Sonos any day.

The store may not be the optimal testing environment, so I suggest taking it home and truly demoing it. Don't know what Apple's return policy is, but Best Buy will let you return it if you are not happy with it up to 30 days. Chances are you will keep it and rid yourself of all the wires associated with 5.1 systems. For surround sound check out B&W Panaroma; just got one of those too; awesome surround sound.........
